Turns out the Stanley Cup actually was back in Mario's pool

The Stanley Cup ending up in the bottom of Mario Lemieux's swimming pool is one of the NHL's legendary Cup tales, to the point where Kevin Allen actually referenced the incident in the title of his book about Stanley's journeys.

Craig Adams(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins told Sun Media that the Cup didn't end up at the bottom of the pool as the Penguins celebrated their 2009 championship at Mario's palatial estate over the weekend. But as a photo gallery on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Web site reveals, the Stanley Cup was most certainly inside the Lemieux pool.

The Penguins bloggers have been buzzing about these all afternoon. Check out the full user-submitted gallery on the Post-Gazette.com, featuring some candid shots of Sidney Crosby(notes), Evgeni Malkin(notes) and Mario's preposterously nice home.

    First , or close Wysh, Tellus that Habs stroy about Montreal players leaving the Cup on a road while "Relieving themselves", forgetting it and driving off, only to find it later, right on a raod where they left it..

    S-hit, I cant spell..Wysh, Please tell us the Habs story about some players stopping on a road to Pee, and they drve away leaving the Stanley Cup behind, and when they went back, it was still there. Better!!

    Disparage his looks all you want, but that is definitely blonde is the MVP's girl. Saw them together at the Igloo on Sunday and at the victory parade Monday.

    I think when people hear that Sid lives at Mario's they tend to think he lives in a room in the basement next to the furnace and a bunch of boxes. Mario's place is VERY nice.
    You got to love how the pool tradition continues.

    Is the girl with Malkin Alyonka Larionov. She was on Pens TV; they did a cooking show? But the gossip was that she may have been dating the penguin that walked in on the video. I don't remember who it was. She has also been linked to Ovechkin.

    I love how much fun they've had. And it looks like Adams is technically right in that it didn't go to the *bottom* of the pool.
    As for Malkin, well, most women will tell you it's not all about looks.

    In the end, Adams wasn't lying. The Cup may have been *in* the pool, but it wasn't at the *bottom* of the pool. So we've learned 2 things: 1) It's not *officially* the Penguins' Cup until it's been wet, and 2) Do not argue semantics with Craig Adams.

    My greatest happiness with Pittsburgh winning is to see Mario happy and healthy..When you saw the two Canada Cups he and Gretzky played in together, there is no doubt who was the better player..LeMieux BTW Means The Best an Francais...
