No. 1 star: Jordan Staal, Pittsburgh Penguins

Let's start with an excerpt from the Puck Daddy live blog of Tuesday's Stanley Cup Finals rematch in Detroit:

Is it just me, or am I the only one who thinks Jordan Staal is doing absolutely nothing this year? Five points in 14 games.

It wasn't exactly a dog pile from there – and yes, we're ignoring the redundancy in the poster's question – but nobody came to Staal's defense, either. This isn't 2006-07. Now fast-forward to the third period Tuesday. The Penguins trailed the Red Wings 5-2. Here's all Staal contributed from the 6:57-mark on: scored three goals, the last of which tied the game with 23 seconds remaining; drew a hooking penalty on Brian Rafalski that gave the Pens a power-play that spilled into overtime; picked Pavel Datsyuk's pocket in OT and started an odd-man rush; fed that stolen puck to Ruslan Fedotenko, who one-timed the game-winner past Chris Osgood. Good night. Pens win 7-6. This may be looked upon as a turnaround game for Staal, but the third-year forward actually kicked things up a notch Saturday. In any case, it was a hall of fame effort in a game that won't soon be forgotten by fans of either team.

No. 2 star: Christopher Higgins, Montreal Canadiens

Higgins made headlines for a hockey mom not named Palin, scoring three goals in a 4-0 win over Ottawa, then dedicating his first career hat trick to his mother, Sue. He got the scoring started by gloving down a beautifully lobbed Saku Koivu breakout pass, then converting a partial breakaway by beating Alex Auld stick side for a shorthanded goal. He'd later beat a helpless, diving Auld in the second period before completing the trick with a third-period breakaway to ice it. Coming off back-to-back losses for the first time this season, the Habs needed this one.

No. 3 star: Dan Ellis, Nashville Predators

Desperate for points in the heart of a six-game road trip, the Preds got a superhuman effort from Ellis, who turned aside 54 shots to snap San Jose's nine-game home win streak. To get an idea how substantial the workload was, the Sharks set a franchise record for shots in a home game … and there were still nine minutes remaining in the third period. The game never would have reached overtime had Ellis not stopped a close-in shot from Ryane Clowe in the final seconds and Nashville would have settled for one point, not a 4-3 overtime win, had he not thwarted Patrick Marleau on an OT breakaway.

Honorable mention: Carey Price rebounded from one of his worst efforts of the season to stop 28 shots for his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career. … Detroit's Jiri Hudler had three points in just 8:34 of ice time and Darren McCarty scored his first goal since 2005-06 in a losing effort. … San Jose's Devin Setoguchi had three points and a franchise-record 10 shots on goal. … Dustin Boyd's first-career multi-goal game helped Calgary to a 4-3 win over Toronto.

Dishonorable mention: Philly coach John Stevens said Scott Hartnell "didn't look like he wanted to play" Tuesday, so he benched the forward for the third period. … Islanders forward Doug Weight pinched but failed to keep the puck in the zone during a late power play, resulting in a 2-on-1 that resulted in a Flyers goal. A chance to tie the matinee 1-1 turned into a two-goal deficit. … The Isles finished 0-for-8 on the power play and failed to convert a pair of 5-on-3 chances. … Sharks goalie Brian Boucher was still working on a shutout late in the second period when a puck popped out of his glove and onto Jason Arnott's stick for a Nashville goal.

Dan Ellis was very impressive and beat San Jose on their home ice. Was interesting to see him matchup with Setoguchi who had 2 goals and 10 shots.

True Alan...I heard the whole Cain/Abel thing started from an incorrectly attributed kudos thread on EdenBlog... and we all know how that turned out. I would sleep with one eye open tonight if I was Eric Staal.

The 57 shots by the Sharks was a franchise record home or away. Prior to the game, home record was 49 shots and on the road was 50.

JORDAN staal was a complete beast tonight!!! if he could produce games like this more often we'd hear alot less trade rumors in Pittsburgh, the only way this game would have been better if it was in the Mellon so he could have received a shower of hats from the pens faithful

Dan Ellis is not human. Watching his saves in person is worth a few hair pulls. Props to him tonight he deserved to win.

No jokes today. You can't cough up the puck in your own zone repeatedly and expect to win too many games. As in another post, I credit the Pens for taking advantage of the opportunities that Detroit gave them. Also, they played 60 minutes.
I'm glad it's early in the season.

What about Mike Ribiero's through the legs shootout deke and his shooshing motion to the Kings bench...followed of course by a Kings victory. The Stars are such d-bags.

So I methinks Hossa is no judge of hockey talent. "I think Detroit is better, blah, blah, blah." Whatever. Never underestimate young legs and talent Hossa, NEVER. Good luck with that cup thing. Moron.

This is one of the greatest regular season games in Penguins history. Definitely the best since Lemieux was playing... better than the Winter Classic

I would not trade Staal even up for Hossa. Hossa is like 9 or 10 years older and has a history of failure in the playoffs. Staal just turned 20 and is a beast. He will be as good as Crosby and Malkin, when he finally grows into his body. Detroit's defense was way to small to try and control him. I believe the smaller Detroit players (including little man Datzuk), must have been on the ice for most of the goals in the third period and overtime. That was not a turn-over, that was a big time STEAL in overtime. Datzuk had no idea what happened. Move over Detroit, your too old to compete anymore and your time in the fame is over.

From about 6 minutes left in the Wings game I was calling fix. Detroit was doing their best to keep the puck in their own zone for the Pens. Anyone else catch Zettergerg leaning over and grabbing the puck with his glove when it was just about to clear the zone? Why are we holding in the puck for the other team? Ozzie should get free swings on all those guys that just hung him out to dry and help the Pens win. Congratulations Pens on your victory, but a owrd of caution, remember it's just one game... the real celebration comes when you hoist the Cup.

A fix?? Seriously? The World Champion Stanley Cup Defending Hockey Town Inhabiting Red Wings throwing a game at home to the team they beat for the Championship five months ago and a team that could easily be their opponent again this spring in a rematch of last year's final? Seriously? Man, you have a LOW opinion of your team...

As usual... the Habs get swept under the carpet in your fake "3 Stars" selection. Give me a break! ALL of Higgins goals were superb! A shorthanded breakaway and another breakaway to seal the deal. What's with the Penguins love-affair. Their superstar can't even score anymore...lol
Montreal all the way next May!

Was I dreaming or was that the "Let's Go Pens" chant echoing throughout the arena last night after the game tying goal. Oh yeah, I couldn't have been dreaming, I was to busy Hootin & Hollerin!!!!!!!!!!!! Hockeytown? How about Lametown. You can't sellout playoff games and half the arena was Pens fans last night. You guys have one of the greatest teams in hockey history, but I must say you have the worst fans!!! How lame!

A fix ?? Are u guys serious ??? Just accept the fact that although you have a great team, your older, more experienced players could not hold up to the pressure and speed of a younger, hungrier team. Sure, maybe there was some revenge motivating the pens, but you cannot deny the passion that they played with in the third period. Shutup and accept the loss.

Someone said yesterday something along the lines of " The Detroit Red Wings, Not a Dynasty. Not a legacy. Not a legend. We just suck." Hahahahahahaha!!!!
The Sharks actually won that game in regulation, but the whistle-happy ref blew a play dead where the puck wasn't even close to frozen just before Thornton knocked it in for a PP goal. Oh well. The Sharks can't win every game.

i usually don't comment on these things but i felt i had to say something in response to bigmtlhockeyfan. first of all, i caught the highlights of the montreal game & was impressed with what higgins was doing. i even commented about that first breakaway that he knocked the puck down with his hand & made that good shot. i can see why you'd think he should be in the 3 stars....but there's no reason to be putting down the pens.

while higgins scored 2 breakaway goals, pitt made a huuuuge comeback vs. probably the best team in hockey for the past few years. staal with the ht in the 3rd was incredible & the fact that he's a 3rd liner shows that they don't need crosby to score non-stop to win in big games. it's not that he can't score anymore (that was a really stupid comment), it's that the rest of the team is showing it's potential to win games with or without sid scoring. anyone that tries to downplay what pitt did just amazes me.
