Puck Daddy - NHL

No. 1 Star: David Perron(notes), St. Louis Blues
The third-year left wing and former first-round pick seems to be improving with every shift, and he gave us his best game to date here, potting three goals as the Blues rolled past the Vancouver Canucks, 6-1. It's the second straight game he's been a difference-maker; Perron notched two points and had eight shots on goal in Sunday's overtime loss at Atlanta. The Blues have a good thing going with this line of Perron, Andy McDonald(notes) and Brad Boyes; that trio combined for five goals and 10 points on the evening (Boyes 1-3-4, McDonald 1-2-3).

No. 2 Star: Miikka Kiprusoff(notes), Calgary Flames
So much for the October slump – the Calgary netminder has been fantastic in three November victories (just two goals allowed) and the Montreal Canadiens weren't able to beat him in 25 attempts here. Kipper gets the nod over the goaltender below for a few key reasons; he was working on the road, he faced more power-play opportunities, and he had less margin of error to work with (Calgary put just one shot past Jaroslav Halak(notes), who was outstanding in his own right).

No. 3 Star: Tim Thomas(notes), Boston Bruins
His teammates "exploded" for two goals (and eventually a third into an empty net) and Thomas easily made it stand up, stopping 27 shots en route to a 3-0 blanking of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Thomas also had some luck on his side; a crazy carom from the corner boards was headed into a vacated Boston cage, but it glanced against the far post and dribbled untouched through the crease. Give Zdeno Chara(notes) an assist in this shutout; the blueline stud logged 25:09 of ice time (much of it against Pittsburgh's top guys) and was plus-2.

Honorable Mention: Dan Boyle(notes) single-handedly bailed out the Sharks against an upset-minded Nashville club, setting up the tying goal with 6:34 to play, then scoring the game winner with 60 ticks remaining. Sooner or later, there's going to be a Norris Trophy on this guy's mantle. … Niklas Backstrom(notes) couldn't buy a road victory for a while but now he has two in a row. He kicked out 37 of 39 shots at Toronto. … Devin Setoguchi(notes) (leg) returned to the lineup after missing seven games and buried his eighth goal of the year (a lucky deflection off a Nashville stick, but hey, it counts). … Jarome Iginla(notes) had the only tally in the Calgary win; the reigning Player of the Week has five markers in his last four games. … Jonathan Cheechoo(notes) finally found the scoresheet for the Ottawa Senators, a pretty top-shelf job. Jason Spezza(notes) also was heard from, creating plenty of offense during regulation (four shots), then clinching the shootout with a nifty deke. Dustin Penner(notes) had one of the three goals for the scrappy Edmonton Oilers, who won‘t mind grabbing a point on the road. He's up to 11-11-22 for the year.

Phil Kessel(notes) had a goal and five shots, giving him a 2-2-4 line and 21 SOG since he returned four games ago. Boston fans don't want to think about it. … Two more points and five shots for Joe Pavelski(notes); he's got four points since returning two games ago. … Emerging Alexei Ponikarovsky(notes) filled the box score for the Toronto Maple Leafs, potting his seventh goal, collecting five shots and picking up four PIMs. … It's encouraging to see Patrice Bergeron(notes) contributing again. He's had a point in the last three games (that's cause for celebration in The Hub these days), including a 1-1-2 effort against the Penguins. Normally we don't spotlight empty-net tallies, but Bergeron deserves credit for burying his shot from deep in the Boston end. … Underrated Mikko Koivu(notes) had a goal and two helpers at Toronto while Marek Zidlicky(notes) contributed a power-play goal and an assist. … Patric Hornqvist(notes) finally got a break, scoring his fourth of the year on five shots. He's piled up 17 SOG in his last three games.

Did You Know?: Marcel Goc(notes) scored just 20 goals in 265 games with Sharks, but he looked like a sniper in his return to San Jose, burying a wrist shot from the left circle for his first goal of the year. It was his first score in 31 games dating back to last season.

Dishonorable Mention: So much for the Andrew Raycroft(notes) run. The Razor was cut for four goals on 13 shots at St. Louis before the Canucks brought Roberto Luongo(notes) (rib) in for relief. Luongo, making his first appearance since Oct. 27, stopped 15 of 17 shots. … Make it five straight pointless games for Sidney Crosby(notes), and he's minus-6 over that span. … Lee Stempniak(notes) wasn't a factor on offense and finished minus-3 in Toronto. … Shea Weber(notes) (foot) returned for the Predators and didn't look all that bad, but his timing was a little off; he couldn't find the net with any of his booming slap shots. … Tomas Plekanec(notes) didn't have a shot and was held off the sheet for his third straight game. … Kevin Bieksa(notes) got into a third-period scrap with B.J. Crombeen(notes) and didn't do much on the power play (one shot). He's got just one point in his last seven games. A handful of Bieksa's teammates took it on the plus-minus chin; Steve Bernier(notes), Sami Salo(notes) and Alex Burrows(notes) all went minus-3.

Two more points and five shots for Joe Pavelski(notes); he's got three multiple-point efforts since returning four games ago.
This was Pavs second game back...

Like others have said, Pavs has only played two games since he returned from injury. He has played four games total, which might be where the confusion comes from.

Plekanec has been the most consistent player for the habs since the season started. But his wingers (and half the roster got a chance to play on that line) have sucked so far. I think there are other habs that could be singled out for a dishonorable mention before Pleks.

the penguins have really hit a wall. i don't blame the injuries, but one can't help but notice how big of an impact they are having. crosby has gone pointless in five games, but he is still generating at least a couple decent chances a game... he can't do everything himself (for instance, when malkin was dominating with crosby out last year, he had plenty of scoring support) unfortunately kunitz and guerin have had stone hands for two weeks, which forced disco to put him with fedex and cookie last night to try changing things up.
every game they are losing another big name, so now the list is extended to talbot, gonchar, malkin, kennedy, letang and orpik. it's a tough time as a fan, and even more so as a player i'm sure... but this is just one more step to test their mettle.
i do start to wonder at what point they call up guys like caputi, letestu or lovejoy (who they'll almost be forced to call up now). tangradi isn't getting the quality ice time (albeit he's played less than half the season because of injury) he should be, so it would be tough to call him up at any point in the near future.
at this point, it's a matter of riding out the storm. talbot and malkin are back practicing, kennedy is still day to day with whatever he's got going on, and gonch will return by the end of the year...hopefully. the fast start out of the gate can only help their situation and provide a little padding, so things should be fine.

@fetus, I like watching the Pens lose as much as the next guy but I think after 6 of the top 7 players are hurt you can officially use injuries as an excuse. What the Pens have to do now is ride out the storm and not rush anyone back to soon. The worst thing this team could do is what the Flyers always do, worry that they aren't in the top four, rush guys back too early and find that half of the team is only at 60% when the playoffs start. And for that matter they have to concede that they are banged up, they are going to lose some games, get some AHL talent some experience and for Pete's sake do not triple shift Crosby throughout this entire period because he will be wiped out by Valentine's Day.

As a Boston Fan can I just say, good riddance to Kessel.
2-2-4 line?? One goal he tapped as it was going in anyway line and his first assist was a secondary one and he wasn't even involved in the play. AND ALL THE SHOTS?? He COULDN'T play that way in BOSTON because he wasn't given the role of Saviour (or puckhog).
Kessel wants to be the show. The kid obviously cares about $$ and not a championship, so Toronto is the PERFECT PLACE because that defines their whole franchise.
Toronto was willing to overpay him and overpay to get him, so, enjoy... thanks for the lottery pick!!

Oh and M, how are 6 of the top 7 Pens injured??? Crosby, Fleury, Staal, Goligoski, Kunitz, Guerin all healthy.
Maybe 4 of their top 10 are out, and that still SUCKS big time and definitely has an effect, but let's not be too dramatic here.

Grrrrreg - I don't know if I'd say that. The effort from the top three has been very consistent every night. They are, of course, the targets for the other teams best checkers, so the results aren't always there, but unlike players of the past (*coughKovalevand the Kostitsynscough*), you hear their names every night, several times. They always have good chances, and they are always working hard. Gionta especially.
I've been impressed with how Plekanec has turned his game around this year so far, and he has been one of their better players.

"Make it five straight pointless games for Sidney Crosby(notes), and he's minus-6 over that span" .... Wow, this kinda surprises me. The greatest to ever skate the planet pointless for 5 games AND minus-6! If the NHL, NBC and Pierre Maguire were not constantly telling me he is the greatest, I would never be able to figure that out by watching him play.......................

Everybody has injuries. It's how you deal with them that separates the wheat from the chaff. Both the Penguins AND the Bruins were down key players. The rest of the Bruins stepped up, the Pens didn't.
And yes, Chara shut down Crosby in the Bruins' defensive zone, but Bergeron did a great job against him as well (much better than Crosby did on Bergeron).

The Canucks were missing their leading goal scorer (Daniel Sedin), their top penalty killer (Rob Johnson), their overpaid aging star (Pavol Demitra, a point-a-game player for last 30 games last year), their top rookie (Michael Grabner), their powerplay quarterbacks (Sami Salo and Mathieu Schneider) and their starting goalie (Roberto Luongo) and managed to play above .500 hockey.
Of course, no one noticed. Now, when injuires hit the Penguins, oh dear God, run for the hills Ma Kettle, the world's ending! Suck it up Pittsburgh. I'm surprised Bettman hasn't temporarily suspended the schedule.
Last time I checked, Boston had some injury trouble too...

I think Crosby is playing hurt and has been for some time. He doesn't have the burst that he normally does and he has been shying away from battling on the boards.
When Malkin and some of the other injured Pens return to the lineup, I think Sid will take a little time off to heal.

@10...Please tell me you arent using the "Other teams best checkers" excuse for this disaster Bob Gainey has put together...I quote a fan from Habs inside/out...."Our top line is all we have right now, and when a team with size at both foward and on defense pushes this very small group from the net, all we are seeing now is 50ft shots being launched, with nobody even driving to the net for a rebound. Bob Gainey has to be fired soon. He has failed miserably in every area possible, and we are stuck with some of these contracts another Four Years.

Pittsburgh fans....See how it feels being the Target now...One Stanley Cup, and look at you now!! Better start rethinking how you felt about all those Detroit Red Wings championships in the last twelve years, and the few near misses they had. See, it's not as easy staying on top as you thought it was.

@fetus, my apologies for opening up the Pens bashing regarding injuries.
@ the rest of the posters in defense of the only real Pens fan that commented so far he made a point of not making excuses for the injuries.
That all said I think everyone has a right to use injuries as an excuse for wins and losses. If you don't have your better players on the ice how can you rationally expect to be successful. Now that is not an excuse for the rest of your team to tank and no one should except guys not busting it but if you lose some games when your star is out and didn't embarrass yourself the truth is the truth.

Yea I agree with M...6 of the Pens key players are out...all 3 of the top defensemen (basically injured in order), the top shooter and huge part of the pp, Kennedy who makes the 3rd line go...if he was healthy they would at least have 2 lines together untouched, and Talbot, who I'm not sure if you (Dry) watched the playoffs or not...but he's kinda important. But basically the Pens just have to hope to get a point or two somewhere in the next two weeks and bring everyone back healthy. They got themselves a nice cushion to at least tread water during these injuries, but they've lost a guy a game for the past 3...it's getting a little nerve wracking.

Montreal after 18 games last season...11-5-2...... This season after 18 games...8-10-0. Now I know we spent close to $25 dollars on free agency, spending usually means more, better, improvement, correct?? You must understand that I deal constantly with Habs fans, where logic has many interpretations..... Now for some fun.....You Tube has a video titled..."Bert and Ernie tries Gangsta-Rap.
