The Pittsburgh Penguins are visiting the Washington Capitals this afternoon at Verizon Center, which of course means another round of Caps fans vs. Sidney Crosby. The animosity was amplified after the last game between the teams, when Crosby and Washington star Alexander Ovechkin had a physical altercation on the ice and that was followed up with 48 hours of back and forth in the media. Crosby in the Post-Gazette:

"He taunts and does those things," Crosby said yesterday. "I don't think that's the way to play. I'm all for playing hard. I think he's a great player. He plays hard. There's no doubt he's a tough guy to play against. But he doesn't need to take runs. ... He went after [teammate Evgeni Malkin's] head probably three shifts before he went after me. He's hitting to hurt."

Whether or not you believe that's "crying" or "whining" is likely tied to how you feel about Crosby. For Capitals fans, it became fuel for the comedic fire, as they came equipped to today's game with everything from pacifiers to jokes about Crosby's fighting technique that they held up against the glass. Photographic evidence after the jump.

(Oh, and Crosby just scored to make it 1-0 early in the first, before Alexander Semin tied it. Motivation's a hell of a thing.)

The Crosby-as-diver motif was well-represented at the game, with this large sign on the glass and more than one "Crosby Diving School" T-shirts sported by fans.

"Hit'em in the Valabiks!" For all the diving and baby iconography, it's good to see a fan mining the depths for some Crosby comedy.

Any sign that mocks with an effective rhyming scheme is truly worthy of attention. Although we hear Sidney prefers Aloe.

Keeping with the tissue motif, this gentleman actually replaced the "Reebok" on the back of the T-shirt with "Kleenex."

Technically correct, we suppose. Again, in case we weren't clear earlier, there were a few signs that referenced Crosby as a crying child.

Case and point. These photocopies were being handed out by fans to other fans in the 100 level. Hey, it beats a Thunderstick.

Uh, wow. Honestly, if Crosby was as flexible with his linemates as he is in aerobics, Satan wouldn't be in the AHL right now.

Finally, Malkin and Crosby have apparently visited a local Sears for a portrait. We don't see the resemblance.

Then there was the baby in the Crosby jersey and the pacifiers and the "great divers in history" and even a few signs that took time away from Crosby-bashing to target Don Cherry for his comments about Ovechkin and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis.

But overall, it was the Sidney Crosby Show for Capitals fans exercising their freedom of expression. The standings tell us that a Capitals/Penguins first-rounder is a distinct possibility. If you can think of a bigger potential first-round showdown in the NHL or NBA this spring, we'd like to see it.

actually, he doesn't suck, his attitude sucks. He's an enormously talented hockey player who spends way to much time yapping at the refs like he's a 20 year nhl vet.

Hitting is not a massage, head hunting and leaving your feet for a hit are against the rules. Going a long distance to wind up for a hit is against the rules.
Hell even Wysh mentioned Ovies tendencies to do all 3, and he keeps this blog rolling by making sure the crosby bashing stays.
As far as ovie, he also is a great talent, and i finally figured out why i just do not like him, everyone that has played has played with a guy like him, takes too many shots, many from bad angles, you give him the puck and most likily will no get it back, you hustle the length of the ice to get in the play to watch him try AGIN to dance thru defenders while ignoring you as open. pretty much the puck hog syndrom that coaches try to beat out of kids early.
Seriously, think about if he has one of the 'best shots in the world' if not the best, how is his shooting percentage SOOOOO low? He takes almost more shots than anyone else (110 more than eric staal, 140 more than Parise who is 2nd in goals). Does not exactly say 'team player' to me. He is that kid in every kid sports movie who runs into center field from first base because he thinks he is that much better/ more important then everyone else. Cant cheer for em.

To a degree colin you are right but the real way to deal with guys like that is to run'em back not cry about it to the press.

And if Crosby and Ovechkin switched teams, all the fans opinion would magically change to the opposite side.

He is better, and more important, than everyone else. That's why they gave him the MVP award. He was more valuable than anyone else to there team.

Well, the Caps tied it at 3-3 early. Pens are taking wayyy to many roughing penalties, falling right into the hands of the Caps. Dumb.

I can well understand why you can't identify with the Ovechkin's of the world. I assume Sidney Crosby is more to your liking, considering your propensity to whine to the "refs" to try to get your way. Remember the reader awards?
Nobody passed the puck to you because 1) you were lousy and; 2) you whined. 3) You probably also got beat up a lot. That's the Darcy Tucker trifecta.

Crosby can be a whiny ass bltch to the refs, but honestly, I think he more gets that reputation hammered on him by the NHL fans. IMO, he's 50 times the whiner when he is bltching about Ovechkin hitting him. WTF does he expect a hit to feel like? If it was supposed to be as pleasurable as his weekly couples massage with Gary Bettman, then it would be termed something other than "hit." I don't know what he was trying to accomplish with his rant to the media, but all he did was solidify his status as the whinyass bltch of the decade.

@ run: Agreed, except i prefer these guys to keep playing, not be injured. i prefer him to get called on it a few times and maybe figure out stopping, plus wysh's self policing panties my get bunched.
@Bog: he won it by winning the scoring title, on a team noone is more important.
@Sledge: actually as a kid i played too much like Ovie, I shot way to much, now I play with balance. In the reader awards i never whined about anything, i stood up for the person who did, because they had a point and a right to say it. as far as the rest, LOL.... lace em up anytime you want killer, though i am sure i will get the 'keyboard badass' response, I can still play the game and am yet to meet someone on the ice that scared me.

+1 one for the Darcy Tucker Trifecta. Loved indeed. And, Moochie ran all over the field hogging the ball because Buttermaker told him too; it is not every actor who can bring some form of Oscar caliber performance to every role, even an adult movie that some clowns think was made for kids. Hmm, did Darcy Tucker play Tanner Boyle?

That the Pens won today changes absolutely nothing as to whether Crosby is the whiny ass bltch of the NHL. He still is, don't worry folks.
