Puck Daddy - NHL

Please recall the rather controversial remarks from golfer Tiger Woods during the Stanley Cup finals, in which he said "I don't think anyone really watches hockey anymore" when asked about the showdown between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

This didn't go over very well with puckheads, who left close to 5,900 comments on our original story and penned some rather, uh, passionate rebuttals.

Even Mike Milbury piled on after Tiger's comment, which came during a news conference at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan, where Tiger appeared via satellite. Quothe Mad Mike:

"You know what? I'm going to change the name now," Milbury said, according to the Globe and Mail. "It's gonna be Tiger Wuss. Here's a guy that took about three months to get over a simple arthroscopic surgery. You look at Ryan Malone (a Penguins forward). His face exploded with a slap shot last night - he's back out in 10 minutes!

"Keep your yap shut, Tiger, or I'll send a couple wingers down there - to tidy you up a little bit, meathead."

Clearly, Tiger's heard the backlash. Speaking at Torrey Pines near San Diego in preparation for the US Open, Woods addressed his hockey comments. From Jeremy Fowler's Roughing It blog for the Orlando Sentinel:

About saying weeks back that nobody watches the NHL or the Stanley Cup finals, Woods said he was trying to be funny but it backfired. His point was that TV merely can't do hockey justice because it's so great live. "I've gotten a lot of grief over that," Woods said. "I said what I said."

So there you go: An apology. Sort of. Going forward: Stick to golf, sir, and leave the comedy to Milbury.

I don't know what's worse that in the US we consider Golf a legitimate sport, which places very little human to human competition, if any really at all, or the fact that we need Automatic Weapons legal in order to kill "Super Animals". I joke...sorry I was doing my best Tiger

NHL sucks at marketing hockey... i personally like hockey LIVE but will watch the Sharks when it matters... the end of the season/playoffs... same with baseball... but NHL needs to step their game up to spark interest ... you cant watch the playoffs cuz most of the games are on funky channels... how is a non-hockey watcher ever going to get interested like that?

"TV cant do hockey justice"? Perhaps that's true. But in reality, TV certainly can't do golf justice. I can still drink beers while watching on TV, but cigars and golf carts are specifically banned from my living room.

what a joke, milbury is right on. golf is the slowest "sport" created, yet way better if you are actually there.
leave hockey to the puckheads.. if not, it might turn into the NBA. alot of flash, no teamwork.

I don't know why golf (or half the crap that ESPN shoves down my throat) is considered a sport.

I can't believe that haven't added the fox-puck to a golf ball yet.... Golf would be pretty sweet with little red and blue streaks flying through the air. Maybe we should get different colors based on the slice factor?

Um...you all realize Tiger didn't say anything at all about hockey players toughness or athleticism right? In NO way did he compare hockey to golf. He simply said he doesn't think anyone watches hockey anymore, as a failed attempt at humour regarding hockey's consistently low ratings. He wasn't wrong (he wasn't right either, but it's not like he was talking about football or Lost or something) and he didn't insult the players.
So for everyone following the Milbury sentiment and saying "Golfers are whiners! They dont hit! WE ARE TOUGH MEN!! AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!"...please, please shut up.

I love to play golf, but nothing puts me to sleep faster than golf on TV. They talk in hush voices, boring through and through. Try sleeping with a hockey game on,won't happen. Its fast paced and very exciting. If you're not into hockey, or don't understand it, its not for you. But for those of us who love the sport, its great. Hard to find on TV, very frustrating at times. But to watch, sorry Tiger, I'll watch hockey over golf any day.

I never said I was a golfer, or considered golf a sport lyle. I said you clowns have just latched onto an opportunity to bash the world's best "athlete" (you can't argue with his results) just because you don't like golf.
Look, I've lived my whole life in Canada, and I'm a card carrying hockey fanatic, so I was all over this non-story. Its typical. Hockey fans fly into a rage anytime a prominent sports figure even so slightly talks down on hockey. We label these people "too slow for the game", "Americanized", "sissy" and that's fine. There's no problem criticizing someone for failing to see the beauty in hockey, a game I consider amongst the most aesthetically pleasing to watch. The problem is when we fire back with comments like those. How are you, the person ripping on golf (a VERY VERY popular past-time amongst hockey players by the way) any better than Tiger for ripping on hockey? Its ok for you to call golfers sissies, girlies, and p***ies, and to call their profession a joke, but its not ok for Tiger to correctly state that hockey gets poor ratings? Get real.
Hockey fans are insecure due to the (incorrect) perception that the sport is now on some lower level. So any time theres any criticism, we fire back with "Yeah? Well were tough. [Insert name of person or sport here] is a sissy because they dont play hockey!" Get over it and enjoy the game.
If Tiger goes years without enjoying a few games of hockey, then thats his loss. If you go your whole summer without enjoying a few rounds of golf because you view it as "sissy" or inferior in some way...well I just feel sorry for you.

ON TOPIC: I think Tiger just made a regretable offhand remark, as I am sure he would not disrespect hockey on purpose. However, I think a better response/apology would show more class on his part, and I seriously doubt it was an attempt at humor.
OFF TOPIC: Golf is a game, like bowling or billiards, not an athletic sport. Conversely, hockey (in my opinion) is the most physically and mentally demanding sport of the big four. I think it doesn't get good ratings because a lot of people in America dont get it. They don't understand the rules, NBC sucks at coverage, and a lot of people can't even see it on TV since espn dropped it.

Too little too late for the Kitten. Glad to see that he took so much grief from hockey fans and rightfully so. Most of the hockey players can play golf but hockey and skating make a great equilizer. It makes some pro athletes look like fools. Bet Kitten could not stand up and take a shot...so I'm glad we gave it to him

There has never, and probably will never be an athlete as successful as Tiger. He's not the strongest, fastest, etc etc. But guess what? Wayne wasn't the fastest skater, Rice wasn't the fastest receiver and Jordan wasnt the best shooter. Tiger dominates his sport (or game, or whatever you want to call it) in a way that no other athlete (or game player, or whatever) ever has. No one is saying hes faster or stronger...physical endurance doesnt equal greatness. There are COUNTLESS phenomenal athletes who dont excell in their sport at the pro level. The best conditioned and most physically fit people in the world are likely not pro athletes. The ones who use their physical abilities to the maximum are.
It doesn't matter that Tiger can't skate, just like it doesn't matter that Wayne Gretzky can't kick a field goal or hit a 3 pointer. The point is that Tiger dominates a sport (game) to a degree that is unheard of (a sport that is certainly more widely played that hockey at that)
So toss out as many "Tiger Wuss" and "Kitty Woods" jokes as you want. The fact is that Tiger Woods, while playing a sport (game) that is apparently for girls and sissies, makes more many every year from his Nike deal than most (all?) NHL players make in a career.
The funny thing is that this comment will likely end up producing more negative press about hockey than it will about Tiger. The guy is indestructable.
And regardless of all this...have you seen Tiger? I'd put money on him being better conditioned, and better athletically (skating not included) than 50% of the NHL. Seriously.
