Please recall the rather controversial remarks from golfer Tiger Woods during the Stanley Cup finals, in which he said "I don't think anyone really watches hockey anymore" when asked about the showdown between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
This didn't go over very well with puckheads, who left close to 5,900 comments on our original story and penned some rather, uh, passionate rebuttals.
Even Mike Milbury piled on after Tiger's comment, which came during a news conference at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan, where Tiger appeared via satellite. Quothe Mad Mike:
"You know what? I'm going to change the name now," Milbury said, according to the Globe and Mail. "It's gonna be Tiger Wuss. Here's a guy that took about three months to get over a simple arthroscopic surgery. You look at Ryan Malone (a Penguins forward). His face exploded with a slap shot last night - he's back out in 10 minutes!"Keep your yap shut, Tiger, or I'll send a couple wingers down there - to tidy you up a little bit, meathead."
Clearly, Tiger's heard the backlash. Speaking at Torrey Pines near San Diego in preparation for the US Open, Woods addressed his hockey comments. From Jeremy Fowler's Roughing It blog for the Orlando Sentinel:
About saying weeks back that nobody watches the NHL or the Stanley Cup finals, Woods said he was trying to be funny but it backfired. His point was that TV merely can't do hockey justice because it's so great live. "I've gotten a lot of grief over that," Woods said. "I said what I said."
So there you go: An apology. Sort of. Going forward: Stick to golf, sir, and leave the comedy to Milbury.

I don't know why golf (or half the crap that ESPN shoves down my throat) is considered a sport.

Look, I've lived my whole life in Canada, and I'm a card carrying hockey fanatic, so I was all over this non-story. Its typical. Hockey fans fly into a rage anytime a prominent sports figure even so slightly talks down on hockey. We label these people "too slow for the game", "Americanized", "sissy" and that's fine. There's no problem criticizing someone for failing to see the beauty in hockey, a game I consider amongst the most aesthetically pleasing to watch. The problem is when we fire back with comments like those. How are you, the person ripping on golf (a VERY VERY popular past-time amongst hockey players by the way) any better than Tiger for ripping on hockey? Its ok for you to call golfers sissies, girlies, and p***ies, and to call their profession a joke, but its not ok for Tiger to correctly state that hockey gets poor ratings? Get real.
Hockey fans are insecure due to the (incorrect) perception that the sport is now on some lower level. So any time theres any criticism, we fire back with "Yeah? Well were tough. [Insert name of person or sport here] is a sissy because they dont play hockey!" Get over it and enjoy the game.
If Tiger goes years without enjoying a few games of hockey, then thats his loss. If you go your whole summer without enjoying a few rounds of golf because you view it as "sissy" or inferior in some way...well I just feel sorry for you.

OFF TOPIC: Golf is a game, like bowling or billiards, not an athletic sport. Conversely, hockey (in my opinion) is the most physically and mentally demanding sport of the big four. I think it doesn't get good ratings because a lot of people in America dont get it. They don't understand the rules, NBC sucks at coverage, and a lot of people can't even see it on TV since espn dropped it.

It doesn't matter that Tiger can't skate, just like it doesn't matter that Wayne Gretzky can't kick a field goal or hit a 3 pointer. The point is that Tiger dominates a sport (game) to a degree that is unheard of (a sport that is certainly more widely played that hockey at that)
So toss out as many "Tiger Wuss" and "Kitty Woods" jokes as you want. The fact is that Tiger Woods, while playing a sport (game) that is apparently for girls and sissies, makes more many every year from his Nike deal than most (all?) NHL players make in a career.
The funny thing is that this comment will likely end up producing more negative press about hockey than it will about Tiger. The guy is indestructable.
And regardless of all this...have you seen Tiger? I'd put money on him being better conditioned, and better athletically (skating not included) than 50% of the NHL. Seriously.
