No. 1 star: Jonathan Cheechoo, San Jose Sharks
The one-time Rocket Richard winner with 56 goals in 2005-06 who subsequently slipped to 36 and 23 goals since, reverted to his goal-scoring title form Thursday night by scoring two in the opener to lead the Sharks to a 4-1 win over the visiting Anaheim Ducks. Cheechoo scored his first at 2:32 to break a scoreless tie. His second came just 4:12 later on the power play. Cheechoo battled hard in front of the Anaheim net to score the power-play goal to make it 2-0 during a period in which San Jose outshot Anaheim 21-3. "It's nice to see Cheechoo rewarded," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "He was a little bit snake bit in the exhibition season and, as a coach, you are a little concerned." Cheechoo finished with four shots on goal during 17:08 of ice time.
No. 2 star: Dominic Moore, Toronto Maple Leafs
The 28-year-old fourth-year forward, claimed off waivers by the Leafs last January from Minnesota, was a bright spot in the preseason and continued his recent play right into Toronto's opener Thursday night. All over the ice, Moore found a way onto the score sheet, too, by scoring the Maple Leafs' second goal of the game, an even-strength tally at 15:04 of the second period to give the visitors a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish. Moore, a plus-2, put a team-high five shots on goal and blocked one of Detroit's drives as the underdog Maple Leafs took two points from the defending Stanley Cup champions.
No. 3 star: Ceremony organizer, Detroit Red Wings
We'd love to have the name of the person in charge of the banner-raising ceremony at Joe Louis Arena, because he or she definitely deserves kudos for a number of appropriate and special touches. For starters, the Stanley Cup headlined eight trophies on display won by the Red Wings last season – Presidents' Trophy, Campbell Bowl (conference title), Conn Smythe (Henrik Zetterberg), Norris Trophy (Nicklas Lidstrom), Selke Trophy (Pavel Datsyuk), Lady Byng (Datsyuk) and Jennings Trophy (Chris Osgood, Dominik Hasek). And fans attending the game were given small replica championship banners at the door. But the really special moment was when a number of Red Wing legends, led by Gordie Howe, carried the 2007-08 Stanley Cup banner through the Zamboni entrance and handed it off to a few current Red Wings players on their way to the rafters.

dude, there was a shutout. 25 shots. I know it was on the westcoast and it's well past your bed time to stay up that late, but throw Luongo a bone brother, the caunks D is not that good,
not to mention, the guys more than likley the starter, if not, for sure the backup, for the Team Canada 2010...show some respect....Wyshy, you missed one buddy. Start of the season in North America, and you already missed one...good work man

In the first official day of the new season, The East beats the West.
Not once, but twice.
Of all teams, Toronto over Detroit?

Alls I can say is that Detroit better get used to being played tough every game. That is what teams will bring against them! They are defending stanley cup champions and if they dont play better than they did last night, they won't even make playoffs!
THEY LOST TO THE LEAFS!!!!

One game at a time, there's still 81 games remaining and 29 other teams to play against and get the pts from.
Red things could have had a cup/banner hang over or just a hang over. To early to tell.

There, I think I covered them all.

Im sure the Canucks opening ceremony was better than the detroit one. They were honoring Luc Bourdon who died over the summer. It was a very emotional ceremony and a lot more important, this is about someone who passed away.
Ok so like you others said, how are burrows and luongo not on there? I may seem like a nucks apologist but in my books burrows is #1.
Bourdon was his best friend and all he does he gooes out and scores 2 goals!

Caught the end of the Vancouver game. Couldn't tell if the Canucks were that good or the Flames were that bad, but I liked the way the Nucks brought it all the way to the end.
Detroit played a mediocre game at best. The Leafs stepped it up. I don't suspect either to be a season-long trend. As far as the Wings, I don't want to hear any of that hangover crap or other b.s. Wing-fan excuses. You all put it on the table before the season started, so eat what's served. You claim to have all the stars, but even All-Star games have a losing side.
GO SHARKS!!
