No. 1 star: Jamie Langenbrunner, New Jersey Devils

The Devils entered the third period at the Boston Bruins up 2-0, with one of those goals coming shorthanded from Captain Langenbrunner. But Chuck Kobasew, Marc Savard and Dennis Wideman scored to give the Bruins the lead before Patrik Elias scored one off of his skate to force overtime. That's where Langenbrunner outworked the Bruins defense in front of Tim Thomas (26 saves) to score the game-winner at 1:11 of OT, giving the Devils a 4-3 victory in a battle of what are now the top two teams in the East.

No. 2 star: Eric Staal, Carolina Hurricanes

Late in the third period with the scored tied 2-2 between the Canes and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Martin St. Louis circled dangerously in the Carolina zone before losing the puck to Staal. He raced into Lightning territory, dished to a teammate and then went straight for the net. After a few frantic chances, the puck came to Staal and he cashed in the game-winner, his 21st goal of the season. Carolina gets a big 3-2 regulation win at home over a team desperately trying to catch the Canes in the standings.

No. 3 star: Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks

There were stretches of the Sharks' home game against the Phoenix Coyotes in which Nabokov wasn't tested. That all changed in the latter part of the third, when Nabby (24 saves) made several critical stops before Marcel Goc sealed the deal with an empty netter, giving San Jose a 2-0 win. Nabokov extended his personal shutout streak to a franchise-record 170:10, outdueling a very solid Ilya Bryzgalov (27 saves).

Honorable Mention: "I've had zero wins here this century," said Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars, who snapped a 0-8-2 streak at the Joe in the Stars' 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Loui Eriksson scored his 23rd in the win; Marian Hossa had his 24th in the loss. ... After scoring four goals in the first period, the New York Islanders gave up three in the third to the Atlanta Thrashers before Kyle Okposo capped his first two-goal game in the NHL with an insurance tally. The Isles won a wild one, 5-4. Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 21st in the loss. ... Stick tap to rookie Peter Regin of the Ottawa Senators, whose first NHL goal was the game-winner in a 3-1 victory at the St. Louis Blues. ... Dustin Brown had two goals and an assist while goalie Jon Quick made 15 saves in the second period alone, as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the visiting Chicago Blackhawks, 5-2. ... Finally, Stephen Weiss had three points, Radek Dvorak scored on a penalty shot and the Florida Panthers had a rousing victory against the visiting Montreal Canadiens, 5-1. But the highlight of the night came courtesy of former Hab Richard Zednik, who scored this gorgeous insurance goal in the second period:

Dishonorable Mention: Ryan Smyth barely touching Vesa Toskala and getting nudged by Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Luke Schenn? Goalie interference. Milan Hejduk's hat trick? Nullified. Referee Don Koharski? Blamed in part for the Colorado Avalanche's 7-4 loss to the Leafs, to the point where Denver Post reporter Adrian Dater repurposed our awesome Koharski/donut image for his blog on the game. Andrew Raycroft giving up seven goals to his former team probably didn't help; neither did the fact that Jeff Finger outscored Darcy Tucker in an 11-goal game. ... The Detroit Red Wings had a video replay and a goalie interference call on Tomas Holmstrom keep two goals off the board against Dallas. ... Finally, further adventures in bad goaltending: Kari Lehtonen gives up four first-period goals on 15 shots before getting lifted for Johan Hedberg; Chris Osgood gives up three first-period goals on 12 shots before leaving for ConkBlock. Yuck.

Good game for the Devils tonight, the two points is all that matters ultimately. Sure, they gave up the lead in the 3rd but they are a resourceful team and are never out of it until the clock says so.
Funny how losing Brodeur hasn't cost the team a thing.......
Wysh, I feel for you, you failed to mention someone you love, I know how difficult it was for you.

Wysh, Eric Staal was no star in that game. He did his usualy disapear for the majority of the night and capitalized on a puck that was sitting waiting for him to tap in. If the guy actually played as hard as some of his teammates he would threatenthe 100 point mark again, but he has no work ethic. Chad LaRose, Matt Cullen and Cam Ward were all better last night.

Honourable Mention: Zednik's beauty goal may have been what slit the Habs' throat, but the real game changer was the perfect butterfly save Ballard made on Koivu when Vokoun decided to switch positions with the blueliner a few minutes earlier. Without Ballard, the Habs tie the game and continue their momentum....Since Wysh failed to mention it, allow me to give props to Parise for his behind-the-net cross-corner trick shot that he intentionally banked off Timmy's back. Hit him square in the numbers like some cross between a slim Minnesota Fats, and the future B-boy turned Viking, Matt Cassel.
Dishonourable Mention: Adrian Dater for failing to attribute that image to PD. When I submit my image of Sakic raising his snowblower triumphantly over his head, you can bet I'll include a giant Puck Daddy watermark splashed across his face.

What, P. Daddy, no mention of Price being "not very good" on low shots, thereby making Zednik's "not that impressive"?

Langenbrunner has been fantastic the last couple of games. He came up huge last night and anyone who doesn't think a guy who scored the first goal of the game shorthanded followed by scoring the OT winner doesn't deserve the first star is clearly biased.

I was at the Wings/Dallas game last night. I'm not sure whats going on with the Wings, but Im sure they'll snap out of it. Dallas looked awesome. Ozzie needs to either step it up or get booted to the minors for Howard.

And this is why I love anticipate and dread a deep Devils run in the postseason. "Typical Wysh -- 'Devils win the Stanley Cup' and *nothing* about the Flyerzzz this morning. Homer!!1!!!1!"

Not for nothing, but Zednik's goal was a little more than just floating a long backhanded past a goalie who didn't give a toss at the end of the third period in a loss ...

I'm waiting for some cranky wings fan to make up an Osgoodian conspiracy theory about how Bettman made those refs nullify those two goals, and that the Wings lost because they only had 20 players against the Blue Jackets.

wow the wings haters are out early today, sobu you age is showing. wings fans dont have to make excuses any one who watched the game knows what happened. yes we played bad but can you honestly say the refs were anywhere close to correct on most of the calls? not if you know anything about the game. there are to many missed calls to list. as for the osgood haters which of those goals are his fault. once again insult the goalie without looking at the real problem. if you want to blame someone draper was awful last night. and i am a big draper fan. so we have hit a little speed bump its ok we will right the ship and get back to our usual winning ways.

With over 35 games to go, I don't think it's time for Detroit fans to panic. It's not like their collapse has attained the level of the 07-08 Sens, who went undefeated for, like, two months before morphing into a team that can't even beat the Islanders.
Just fumble along for the rest of the year, then stink it up out of the gate next season, before giving Howard his shot in January. It worked for Elliott.

on a side note if i was a fan of an eastern conf team, i would worry more about the devils then any other team out there. they are heating up and as we know teams that get hot at the right time can go far riding momentum. just sayin.
