No. 1 star: Jason Blake, Toronto Maple Leafs

We generally don't get too excited about hat tricks capped by empty-net goals here at Three Stars Central, but Blake built up enough style points on goals one and two Thursday to earn a pass. Plus the capper was fairly gritty as far as freebies go – the Toronto forward was tripped on the way in and crashed into the goal immediately after the puck crossed the line to ice a 6-4 win over Carolina. This one had a bit of everything, starting with Paul Maurice's pre-game declaration that he hopes the Leafs lose every game for the next 10 years. Blake's first goal was a slick wraparound and his diving shot (pictured abovve) that beat Cam Ward later in the same period was one for the highlight reel. Toronto's 4-0 lead was erased in a little over 10 minutes, but a Tomas Kaberle power-play goal (assisted by Blake) restored order. Factor in a helper on the Leafs' first goal and it adds up to the first five-point game in Blake's 630-game career.

No. 2 star: Dion Phaneuf, Calgary Flames

Phaneuf's first goal in 26 games brought an even more remarkable streak to an end, as the Flames beat San Jose 3-2 to hand the Sharks their first regulation loss on home ice in 11 months. It wasn't the prettiest goal of his career – the puck caromed off the stick of Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic for the game-winner at 16:03 – but after more than two months without a goal the Calgary defenseman will take them any way they come. Elsewhere Phaneuf made his typical imprint, leading the Flames with eight hits and blocking three shots while helping Calgary overcome a pair of one-goal deficits.

No. 3 star: Joakim Lindstrom, Phoenix Coyotes

It's never a bad idea to get pucks on net against a goalie trying to knock the rust off and that's exactly what Lindstrom did Thursday, scoring a pair of goals in the opening period to spoil Roberto Luongo's return to action. He darn near had a hat trick in the first 20 minutes, but Luongo's blocker intervened. Lindstrom couldn't stick in Columbus and he's kicked around a bit the past two seasons, but with seven goals in 17 games he appears to have found a home in the desert.

Honorable mention: Tim Thomas made 40 saves for the Bruins in a 2-1 win over the Islanders that allowed Boston to pass San Jose atop the NHL standings. … Mike Smith improved to 2-0-1 against the Flyers this season, making 31 saves in a 4-1 Tampa Bay win. … Pierre-Marc Bouchard had a goal and two assists for the Wild in a 5-1 win over Edmonton. … Blues rookie T.J. Oshie had three points (goal, two assists) for the first multi-point effort of his career. … Ty Conklin's 23-save shutout was the ninth of his career.

Dishonorable mention: Luongo trailed 1-0 after one shot in his return after missing 24 games with a groin injury. … Nashville goalies had better be sharp. Including Thursday's 3-2 loss the Preds have scored two goals or fewer in 11 of 14 games. … Speaking of empty-netters, Kris Draper's goal Thursday was his first of the season scored with an opposing goalie on the ice.

Jeez, thanks a LOT, Calgary. Now all you did was get San Jose angry, just in time for my Red Wings to come into town on Saturday night. And after that 6-0 spanking in the last meeting, I'll bet they'll be PLENTY motivated now...

Bald Guy, the previous games against both Calgary and Detroit will probably give the Sharks (for whom I root vociferously) more motivation than tonight's loss. Lots of crossbar action on both sides, with the Flames getting the better bounce (Yeah Dion, that's your goal) but on the road, the Flames earned that win, big time.
As for Saturday, I'm hoping to see Osgood, and also that Rob Blake plays; I have been pleasantly surprised all year by what he was bringing to the Sharks, but did not quite realize what the PP would look like without him (the brief 5 on 3 'effort' in particular).

"Speaking of empty-netters, Kris Draper's goal Thursday was his first of the season scored with an opposing goalie on the ice."
I don't understand how that is a dishonorable mention.... maybe if he scored another empty netter you could've put it under dishonorable mention.. but it really makes no sense to bash him for scoring a real goal. How often will you see Draper within the first 3 stars of the game? Let me rephrase that.. How often will you see Draper within the first 10 stars of the game?

The Big Bad Bruins are back! I can remember they had 4 great hockey players that
had 100 points or more in one season. They were,Johnny Bucyk,Wayne Cashman.
Phil Esposito, and Bobby Orr. I hope they will win the Stanley Cup and put Detroit
    out of their misery.

Tired of watching the hapless Stars play one period of hockey a night. can Tippett, he doesn't know how to motivate people for an entire game, and you can forget the playoffs, if you can't beat a road weary team and taking a 3-1 lead. Bye Dave good luck in Juniors. maybe your passive coaching techniques will work there. This is the NHL baby where it doesn't work. go stars without tippett

Dishonourable mention to Pierre MacGuire (McGuire?) for waxing poetic and masturbatory over the absolute wonderfulness of the defensive combo of Kaberle and Kubina throughout the entire freaking TO-Carolina game ... their calming influence, their composure, their cool-as-the-other-side-of-pillow breakout passes, their rocketing shots, their itch-proof jock-straps. I guess that beautiful defensive pairing is why the MakeBeliefs didn't give up a 4-goal lead in ten minutes and why they are just inches away from winning the Vezina with their stellar GAA. MacGuire you stink Wyshynskiesque.

Honourable Mention: Great comeback by the 'Canes. I fell asleep for literally a few minutes, and all of a sudden it was 4-4. Maybe they should trade Eaves for Gerber. He's the one who got them to the playoffs in '06.

    @ Clark F:
The '08-09 Bruins are not even close the the B's teams of the 70's. Their top scorer, Marc Savard, is neither big nor bad. In fact, he, Krejci and Kessel are are the exact opposite of big and bad.
Cashman never scored 100 points. It was Hodge.

Big Z aint bad? He could probably kick any other bruins ass anytime dude.. Whew! I watched those Bruins of the 70's, Johnny "Pie" McKenzie was my favorite, that team bruised people and Bobby Orr could just take the puck and keep it...this team is faster and the whole game is different

Draper was a good role player. Now he's just an old minutes eater.
His production since the lockout: 32, 29, 17 and this season he has a whopping seven points.
His Stanley Cup rings are nice. Claude Lemieux has some nice rings. Steve Yzerman has some nice rings. Maurice Richard had some nice rings. None of them are going to propel any team to the Cup.

I think the entire Flames team deserve an honourable mention. Then didn't pleay pretty, nor did they play really well, but they played right. They played disruptively and caused the Sharks to lose chemistry by keep them skiddish. That's tough to do, especially in San Jose.
It looked like San Jose was just playing bad, but don't be fooled a great deal of that was because of the way Calgary played.

I agree. They kept San Jose out of their usual rhythm and forced them to dump the puck in the zone more often than not. Calgary played one hell of a game and it showed why they are becoming one of the top teams of this league

Fox, I see your point; my post was more tounge in cheek, as the Sharks obviously won't need any extra motivation to play the Wings (which has also been the case for the opponents in the other 40+ games the Wings have faced). It's the current champions coming to your rink, who handed them their worst defeat (I think) last time they played; and now this with Calgary? They should be PLENTY motivated. Fire up the hype machine for this one!
As a Sharks fan, I'm not suprised you're hoping to see Osgood; as a Wings fan, I'm hoping to see Conklin. Tradittion takes a back-seat to a hot streak, if I'm coaching. Ozzie has a 16-8-1 record against the Sharks, but this isn't the same team as when a lot of those numbers were piled up; Conklin has shutouts in 3 of his last 5 starts, but I'm not really expecting him to do that again. Either way, Babcock knows best, and I'll be hoping for the California Sweep on Saturday.
Should be great--the Sharks are one hell of a team, and they have it all going for them right now, and the Wings are 8-0-2 in their last 10, and suddenly right behind them in the standings. I'm gonna say Sharks 5-3 if Osgood starts, and Sharks 4-3 in OT if it's Conklin. I hope I'm wrong, but honestly, as a hockey fan, I just want to watch the two best teams in the West duke it out...

Gaustad an honorable mention after scoring two after being down 4-1 in the third period to help win the game? Of course he's not going to get a mention. He's a Sabre.
