Puck Daddy - NHL

Joe Sakic is taking his sweet time, trying to figure out if he can squeeze another year out of his body (and whether it's worth it, considering the off-season they've had in Denver.) What Sakic probably doesn't realize is that he's holding two fan bases in breathless anticipation of his decision: Colorado Avalanche puckheads who are quietly begging for one last run with the old band, and the nostalgic gamers who are wondering if the number of active alumni from "NHL '94" is about to dwindle yet again.

If you've read Puck Daddy, you know that we worship EA Sports' classic "NHL '94" like other tribes around the world worship an empty Coke bottle or a faded photo of Howard Stern. Kevin Schultz on Barry Melrose Rocks is equally as obsessed, and has a rather epic post today about the players still chugging along 14 years later:

There are still players in the league who were privileged enough to be a part of this hockey video game classic, but their numbers are dwindling. They're not exactly WW2 vets, but they are becoming increasingly rare nonetheless. Even the teams are vastly different. Three teams are now in different places and four were yet to be brought into existence (ah, the joys of a 26 team league).

Schultz has a list of "43 players who are still active in the NHL and a couple that are playing in Europe." Six franchises featured in the game no longer have any players active in the League: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals.

That's right: Even the Hartford Whalers (Michael Nylander and Robert Petrovicky), Quebec Nordiques (Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Owen Nolan, Chris Simon and Adam Foote), Winnipeg Jets (Teemu Selanne, Keith Tkachuk and Teppo Numminen) and even the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (Sean Hill, hanging by a thread) are still represented.

So here's the question: Who will be the last player standing from "NHL '94?" Tkachuk is 36 and, assuming he doesn't chub up again, could play for another few years. Roman Hamrlik is only 34, so he's got some time ahead of him, too. Alexei Kovalev is 35 but he's playing like he's 16.

The answer is, of course, Chris Chelios. Because all they're going to find after the sun explodes are cockroaches, Twinkies and Chris Chelios on a treadmill.

the real esate boom of 2004, 2005 is the biggest ponzi scheme of the decade probably... close to as bad as insider trading in 2000 with shady nasdaq stocks.... the record high prices of 2004-2005 was fueled by big mouths and pumpers that were trying to fatten their wallet... in all reality, the supply is 10x's greater than the demand. hollywood hills is back to being a nothing neighborhood filled with teenie boppers and kiddies. watch as the real estate market crashes and burns due to 1. a tumbling stock market, 2. ridiculous gas prices, 3. high food prices, 4. people really dont have money to spend, 5. the tons of people that bought in 2004-05 cant afford their ridiculous mortgage and ridiculous tax. too bad elton

Nope, sadly '94 did not have fighting, but man, could you one-time like crazy. When you have games with scores like 42 - 36 in the 2nd period, it almost made Madden seem realistic.
On a strangely related note, while '94 did not have fighting, I think the real esate boom of 2004-2005 DID have fighting, but you had to have a gameshark.
BTW: Wyshy, whom from the 93-94 Pens roster is still around. Recchi was gone by that point and Jagr just shipped off for Siberia. I don't think Richard Park or Naslund were there yet. I'm drawing a blank here, embarrassed to say.

Bure was a monster. No one could touch him. Andreychuk had a blistering shot from the top of the circle. Best of all, playing 5 minute periods, my buddy and I could rack up almost 250 hits in a Detroit v. Chicago matchup. Back before the Hawks were dismantled.

Fantastic screen grab. I'd bet on big games from Nelson Emerson and Luciano Borsato (God I miss the Jets)
Also great...10 goals on 48 shots equals a 20% shooting percentage? Video games without decimals...nice!

How did Winnipeg have time to get off 48 shots during the 244 body checks?

Great post. I loved NHL 94 and no matter what, I was always NYR. Funny enough, a majority of my hockey card collection is made up of the ’94 season.
How about Paul Kariya, his pro career started in ’93/94 right?

Good point #12, dude's must have been playing 20 minute periods to accumulate 244 body checks, God that'd take forever. Only attempted ONE one timer? That's tough to do as well.

Hey, how is Glen Murray not on that list? Was he just not included on the roster for the game? Below are his stats for the B's 93-95. So he was on the roster and played games both seasons. I hope he is not on the roster for 08-09, but we will have to see. Thanks again Mike O'Connell!

#1 in Goals and Points for USA is still playing. Mike Modano was pretty good in 94, but the poster talking Calgary is right. That team was a scoring machine.

i still play this game on my pc with the zsnes emulator. the '92-'93 bruins weren't bad with the oates/neely/juneau line and bourque and sweeny on d. i let friends play as the all-star teams and still beat them by a huge margin.
at least when there's a hat trick in nhl '94 the fans throw their hats to the ice unlike nhl '08.

have you checked the game to see if kolzig was on there? I think during that time he was the third goalie, kind of in and out of the minors. I could be wrong though, and I don't own 94.

Chris Chelios who's 46 could only play another 6 years b/c he doesn't want to beat Howe's 52. I think every bodies forgetting the obvious choice. I think Nick Lidstrom could be the last one. He's 38 and still's the best defenseman in the league. He also plays around 30 minutes a night and doesn't seem to be slowing down. And don't forget he's always in the right place so he doesn't get hurt. The only question is will he want to.
