Puck Daddy - NHL

It's been about twenty-four hours since news broke that Marian Hossa signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He took less money and terms than what was rumored to be offered to him on the open market. The rich just got richer. Add Hossa to a lineup with Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom among others, and well, you've got your 2009 Stanley Cup champions.

The feelings in Pittsburgh are those of being on the worse end of a breakup. It was a short fourth-month relationship, but the Steel City embraced Hossa so much that the 29-year old Czech brushed aside his previous postseason issues and posted a 12-goal and 26-point performance during the playoffs.

After hearing Hossa speak during the Stanley Cup Finals, Pittsburgh Penguin fans were confident he would re-sign and spend his prime years playing alongside Sidney Crosby.

Since 12:30 pm ET yesterday when the announcement began flying across the Internet, the reaction from these fans has not been pleasant.

Let's Go Penguins.com message boards:
"AlexPKeaton: I have no respect for Ho$$a at all."

BigK at Penguins That Fly:
"Hope he fails horribly, maybe suffers a career ending injury there."

ThePensBlog:
"It's almost as if we should retire that x=Stunned equation. It doesn't do this situation justice."

Justin Maffei, Faceoff Factor:
"Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins should have a bitter taste in their mouth after Hossa rejected their offers for Detroit. Marian Hossa essentially told them that he thought they did not have a chance to win a rematch with the Stanley Cup Champions."

Michael Dell, LCS Hockey:
"Yeah, it may seem like the Wings are locks to repeat as champs now that they've got Hossa alongside Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, but not so fast, my friend. Karma ain't no joke. Hossa is one knee injury away from pissing away $50 million. And it couldn't happen to a better guy."

And then, there's this video, with a stick tap to ThePensblog for the find:

What's funny is that now that wingers Ryan Malone and Hossa have left, Penguin fans are now holding vigil for a Jaromir Jagr return. The same Jaromir Jagr that is booed every time he touches the puck inside Mellon Arena. The same Jagr that left a bad taste in the mouths of Pittsburgh'ers when he left for greener pastures.

Isn't ironic that Hossa is now taking the wrath of Penguin fans for taking less money, and Jagr is being welcomed back with open arms?

To paraphrase Rick James on Chappelle's Show, "Free agency's a helluva drug."

Is there any truth to the rumor that now that roster sheets determine game outcomes and that it is now guaranteed that Detroit will repeat, three-peat, etc. that in order to save cost, the league will not actually play any games next season and instead will replace each game with a compilation of highlights featuring Canada's favorite (i.e. Ontario-born, non-French Canadian) son, Wayne Gretzky?
Or would that interfere with his long-standing and well-known plan involving every official, coach, broadcaster, etc to rig every game in favor of Sidney Crosby?

I understand why the Penguin fans are upset. A couple years ago I was cussin' Shanny when he left and before that, Sergei.
However, I would NEVER wish any harm to them. They still have my thanks and best wishes.
Hockey is a business and ya gotta enjoy 'em while ya got 'em
    Go Red Wings!!

All the penguin whiners need to grow up...the guy feels that he has a better shot at winning by taking LESS money and being one piece of a very talented team. You hear athletes talk about wanting to win a championship all the time. Nobody is ripping Gilbert Arenas apart and he left his team for an ungodly amount of money. It is all a part of the free agency lifestyle and Hossa should applauded for thinking more about a championship than for personal monetary gains. Congrats to both Hossa and the 2009 champion Red Wings!!!

It's worse than being on the wrong end of a breakup; this is tantamount to your wife leaving you for another woman. There will be justice. The Hockey Gods will not deal kindly with Hossa for his shameless effrontery.

Kudos on the subtle product placement, Leahy - I'm now dying for a Miller Lite. Whatever they're paying you, they should double it.

Don't lump all the Pittsburgh fans together G-dub, some of us don't have those ill-feelings toward Hossa, you do what you have to do to try and win. The west is a tough conference, Wings will be a great team, but they won't coast through. And No, not everyone is hoping for a Jagr return, we have an excellent core group of players and do not need 'JJ' screwing with that. Crosby will just have to wait a little longer to get his Jari Kurri, or maybe he'll finally start shooting a bit more himself

One player don't make a team, Sure Hossa helped my Pens in the playoffs, but he was one of many players that got the job down to go the the Stanely Cup Finals. In the Burgh all that matters is we are locking up the core players that matters for the long hall to get to the finals again and capture it. Hossa is super talented and I will sure miss his attributes to the Pens, I wish him well and nothing but the best. But at the end of the day the talent is still here and the pieces of the puzzle are still out there via through free agents or minor league team, the future is still very bright for Burgh. GO PENS!

It seems that the Penguins fans have turned a deaf ear to all of the "Sidney Crosby" talk the rest of the NHL loyal had to hear before, during, and after the playoffs. Perhaps Hossa became sick of the "Sid the Kid" stuff and decided to go to a team of grownups and winners instead of the kid crew and the whiners.
    Go Wings!

Wishing for a career ending injury is all the class I would expect out of the steel city. Didn't you all whine and cry enough in the Stanley Cup Finals. Calling for "karmic repercussion" is absurd, and if you think about it, that circle has no end and it will come back and bite you.

#2 You're correct in stating the fact, that roster sheets can't predict next years cup champs. I kinda like our chances, better than the Pens though. Pittsburgh-ers were happy when they picked him (Hossa) up before the playoffs, and now were are just as happy to have him. It's a sport......so it goes.

@RussianRocket: I'm a Pens fan and in the "indifferent" about Hossa group. I think the desire for the Pens to sign Hossa increased greatly once half the team left for Tampa Bay. I think the money that could be used on Hossa will be put to better use locking up the core and bringing in some other piece.

The rich may be getting richer, but this is a team and an organization that builds championships - it doesn't buy them as some would believe. Lidstrom, Filpula, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Osgood, Kronwall, Franzen, McCarty, Drapes, Holmstrom - all brought up through the draft and Detroit system.
It's great to have Hossa aboard, but here's hoping that HE doesn't screw up the team chemistry that has been a staple of the Red Wing organization for so many years. Cheers to a repeat in '09 (hopefullly).
    GO WINGS!!!
