Puck Daddy - NHL

As was mentioned in this weekend's Puck Headlines, a rumor was passed along on Hockey Night in Canada that new Tampa Bay Lightning owner Oren Koules would replace current head coach John Tortorella with ESPN mullet Barry Melrose; whom we assume would quit his position with the Newark chamber of commerce to coach his first NHL team in 13 years. (But who would replace The Mullet on the WWL? Don Cherry? Shakira?)

Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes reached out to the former Los Angeles Kings coach about the rumor, and received the expected denial that no formal talks have occurred:

As Melrose said, "The last I heard, John Tortorella was the coach there, so there's not much I can talk about."

Still, it is enough to log in that the rumor is out there. Melrose said he has not spoken to Koules or any representative from the Lightning about the Tampa Bay job. In fact, he said he did not know of Strachan's comments until some "buddies" called him Saturday night to inform him.

Here are the facts: Melrose told Cristodero that he's been waiting to take his well-tailored pimp suits back behind an NHL bench. "I've said it several times, I would love to coach again. You're always watching, always talking, what you would do in situations," he said. Meanwhile, Torts has told GM Jay Feaster that it may be better for the Lightning to have someone else coaching the team next season, and Martin Fennelly of the Tampa Tribune believes that's a smashing idea.

But is Barry Melrose the right mullet for the job? Based on the feedback on Lightning Strikes, that would be a negative. Comment ‘o the day: "[And] Neil Smith will be the GM... for two days. Sean Burke will then retire and replace Smith as the GM." Ha!

No, we didn't think we'd have two posts about the Tampa Bay Lightning on April 28th, either. And what's with Flyers fans vandalizing Melrose's Wikipedia page?

I miss Barry on Versus. There aren't enough bad haircuts with just Kieth (Brickhead)Jones and Brian (Hair Club for Raccoons)Engblom holding down the fort. The new guy sitting to their left has no known identity, let alone a head. Or hair.

barry truly had a unique skating style as shown in that hockey card. i think it was classified as "early java man"..... the sloping shoulders, the open mouth, the blank stare.....

I suppose with the changes with the Bolts as of last year and new ownership, a change in head coach might be in the best interest of the team. Torts will land on his feet almost anywhere in the NHL. As for Barry, why not? He's the most exciting prospect out there. Think of it, can anyone name another current head coach in the NHL, but everyone knows the the 'Mullet'. Might be good for more North American telecasts.

If Jay Feaster had listened to Torts and not traded a 30 goal scorer (not to mention a guy who has become at least a solid backup goalie) for now AHL back-up Mark Denis, the only talk about Barry would be about the ever-graying mullet. So, does that make it a "grullet"? If they are going to fire Torterella, why not give Brent Petersen of Nashville a shot? No offense to Barry; but Gretzky was still skating when he last got the axe.

I think if the team get rid of Torts at this point we can look forward to a repeat of last seasons performance, as the team, again has to adjust itself to another new style. The only hope we have for the team to pull itself out of this "funk" is to quit making these "major changes" and give the guys a break. I'm not saying Melrose couldn't or wouldn't do a good job here. What I'm saying is, it makes no sense to continually change things, and not let the team have a solid grasp on itself as a whole.

There is more to coaching then just the Head Coach- there are the assistant coaches. On my list the first person to fire is not Torts- it's some of his assistant coaches! Like...ummm...I don't know...maybe...THE ASSISTANTS THAT WORK WITH THE GOALIES!!!! Other than a real problem with the goalies, Tampa bay has no excuse for its poor performance- just bad luck. Torts shouldn't be hung out. I do fear with the new owners will come bad financial decisions- which will lead to another losing season.

WAIT!!! I got a better idea than the Mullet. Let's get Terry Crisp back- he has about the same credentials- hasn't coached in years, winning strategies, and a bad haircut. PERFECT!!! Keep the Tort!
