Al Strachan must have something against the Tampa Bay Lightning because he's done a pretty good job pissing them off in the last year.

Let's go back to last February, during Hockey Night in Canada's "Hotstove" segment, when he told the hockey world that Vincent Lecavalier would demand a trade over the summer -- with a likely destination being Montreal.

Almost exactly four months to the day Strachan said that, Lecavalier signed an 11-year, $85 million extension, assuring he'll spend the rest of his career in Tampa Bay.

This past weekend, Strachan was at it again by "reporting" (video) that a Lightning player had told him Tampa Bay co-owner Len Barrie went into the locker room during one the games in Prague and began diagramming power-play and shorthanded strategies.

Barrie and head coach Barry Melrose were none too happy with Strachan, and decided to throw both the B.S. and the spaghetti at the hockey "insider."

From Lightning Strikes:

"What a joke. I mean, come on," Barrie said. "We've got four capable coaches to do that. The day we don't think they are capable of handling that is the day I don't go into the locker room to diagram plays but to make a change (at coach)."

"Al is sort of a spaghetti salesman," Melrose said. "Al just throws so much against the wall and hopes something sticks. It's B.S. Al thrives on B.S. It's total lies."

Now, while having someone else script the power-play might sound like a good idea while the Lightning went 0-for-9 in their two games against the New York Rangers in the Czech Republic, this blatant "example" of undermining Melrose would have boiled over by now (Dan Boyle-style) -- if true, of course.

Would Melrose be so desperate to prove he can coach in the "new" National Hockey League that he'd be willing to allow outside help in instructing his team, specifically from one of the teams' owners?

Back to Strachan: It's good to see a reporter with, ahem, such solid sources as a regular on Hockey Night. It's quite the stark contrast on both sides of the Hotstove set with Pierre LeBrun, a non-sensationalist reporter and Strachan, whose past rumors are very much that of a spaghetti salesman.

The next time you hear him bring up any rumor on the Hotstove segment, please keep in mind the words of Anaheim Ducks general manager Brian Burke, who reacted with this after hearing he was about to trade Brendan Morrison and Bryan Allan for Michael Peca back in 2001:

"The fact that Al Strachan reported this trade rumour by itself should make it suspect," Burke told the Globe and Mail. "His accuracy rate on rumours like this is non-existent.

"The fact that a respected media like Hockey Night in Canada would allow this type of garbage to be aired is ridiculous."

Unfortunately, the amount of print, airtime and Internet blog space that both the Lecavalier and Barrie stories have been given are justifiable in the minds of Hockey Night executives; whether or not, in the end, they are credible.

That last line is the real issue; a piece of garbage gets "reported", and then other outlets simply pick it up and amplify it, without taking any responsibility to verify whether or not there's any meat to the story. This happens over and over again in modern media of all kinds, not just hockey. Witness the recent goof where Google News picked up a years-old story about United going bankrupt, and it resulted in the stock getting hammered as other outlets picked up the "news".
Genuine reporting and editing have gone the way of the Dodo, apparently.

@ Forechecker---yea but the DODO had an excuse. Today objectivity is gone and replaced by the opinions/slants and the dictation of others.

Also, Al Strachan is horrible and a wonderful example to point to the next time some idiot PR flak mentions that only "responsible and accurate" journalists can be in the press box.

I've long lobbied for that slogan to actually be etched into the bowl of the Stanley Cup for the team that wins it every season. I might give Things Remembered over in the mall a call ...

Strachan is such a toolbag. The most annoying thing about him is his arrogance in thinking that he is always right. He's even less relevant reporter than Stan Fischler. Neither of them have ever contributed anything of significance to the world of hockey.

ah yes, the accountability the msm feels we bloggers should have.
i love the liberal use of quotation marks in this piece. it perfectly frames strachan and his "situation." it almost make me happy i have the limited us coverage. almost.

I'll bet Lecavalier is wishing he HAD asked for a trade. Sorry Vinnie, enjoying missing the playoffs for the rest of your career. Aren't they saying Montreal has a shot at the Cup? I'm sure when Vinnie gets into the opposing zone and sees Mark Recchi and Gary Roberts huffing and puffing to get to their own blue line he wonders why he signed with the lightning

TMZ would do a better job covering the NHL than this moron. Dan Rather gets thrown under the bus after 30+ years of service over one mistake in reporting, yet this jackal keeps working on a nationally telecast show after constant mistakes in reporting. C'mon Hockey Night, you can do better than that.

Great comment re: the contrast between LeBrun and Strachan. Strach tries to be contrarian (a la Don Cherry) but instead comes off as what he really is - a doofus. I've always felt that LeBrun (along with McKenzie on TSN) is one of the best in the biz. Someone should really spearhead a movement to get this buffoon off of the air as I doubt my acts of changing the channel when he's on will have any effect.

This is nothing new. The Toronto Sun, New York Post, Eklund. Senationalism sells. It doesn't all have to be rumors either. Don Cherry, James Boomer Gordan, all aren't shy about voicing their opinions no matter how wrong they may be. Yet people read/listen to all these sources. Look I'm guilty of finding these guys amusing but I don't give them any credibility. Good job Wysh for shining light on all these muck rakers. Remember there is nothing wrong with having an opinion and feeling strong about it, but when you keep coming up incorrect maybe this shouldn't be your job.

Therein lies the entire issue, Strachan does not report these issues, impending trades/trade demands and coaching contraversies as opinion, he reports them as fact. I distinctly remember when he suggested that Vinny was on his way out of Tampa and the pompous, lean-back-in-my-chair-so-you-can-all-bask-in-my-glory look on his face as he delivered his vile speech. I can honestly say that I would rather punch Al Strachan in the face than Sean Avery and THAT is saying something!
