No. 1 star: Brad Richards, Dallas Stars
All it took was a Joe Pavelski blown tire to pump some life into what had been a pretty ordinary game for Richards. Held without a shot through two periods, Richards had a scoring chance gift-wrapped for him when the young San Jose forward slipped and lost control of the puck. He capitalized by beating Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov with a wrist shot that tied the game 2-2. San Jose unraveled from there. Richards, who struggled late in the regular season after joining Dallas in a deadline deal, nearly doubled his postseason scoring total in the third period alone, factoring in on all four Stars goals. He finished the evening with one goal and three assists to up his totals to nine points in eight games for the hard-charging Stars.

No. 2 star: Jordan Staal, Pittsburgh Penguins
Staal did his normal work on the Penguins penalty kill, playing a forward-high 5:48 while shorthanded as Pittsburgh killed all six Rangers power plays in Game 2. Offensively, Staal potted the game-winner, taking a pass from Evgeni Malkin and shifting the puck from his backhand to his forehand before elevating it over a sprawling Henrik Lundqvist. Staal and his linemates were clogging shooting lanes all day as the Rangers struggled to get pucks on Marc-Andre Fleury, particularly in those final minutes of desperation.

No. 3 star: Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
Pens goalie Marc-Andre Fleury didn't make any mistakes Sunday. For that he gets a win, a share of the postseason lead in shutouts (two) and a two-disc set of Mike Lange's greatest goal calls. For his efforts, Lundqvist gets the third star and a must-win date with the Pens on Tuesday in New York. This game was there for the Rangers to steal until Adam Hall's empty-netter with 17 ticks remaining. The reason the only thing between the Rangers and overtime was an early whistle was the play of Lundqvist. He stopped 14 first-period shots, including all five on an early Pittsburgh power-play and everything he faced during a rare and dangerous 4-on-3 Pens advantage.

Major penalty: The Game 2 theme for the New York Rangers was tightening up the defense. That's fine. Something had to be done after blowing a three-goal lead in the series opener. But did the Rangers retreat too far a defensive shell Sunday? Fleury was rarely pressured in Game 2. Pittsburgh's 32-26 advantage in shots was rather modest, but while Lundqvist was facing traffic and odd-man rushes, the Blueshirts seemed to be attacking from the perimeter all afternoon. When it came time to dial it up in the final minutes, there was no response. Handed four minutes in penalties in the final six minutes of regulation, the Rangers mustered only a single shot. With Lundqvist pulled for a 6-on-4 advantage, New York failed to get any pucks on Fleury or generate anything resembling a scoring chance.

Minor penalty: The San Jose Sabercats hung 70 points on the Los Angeles Avengers on Saturday. The San Jose Stealth also fattened up Saturday, beating Colorado 11-6 to capture the NNL West title. The hockey tie-in? Both games were played at the San Jose arena Saturday. Couple that activity with 80-plus degree temperatures at game time Sunday and you're facing an uphill battle trying to maintain a playable sheet of ice. Gotta pay the bills, of course, but you also have to wonder if Pavelski loses that edge if it Game 2 was in, say, Edmonton.

Conn Smythe watch (Based on playoff performance to date and likelihood of deep playoff run.)

1. Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins
2. Chris Osgood, Detroit Red Wings
3. Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins
4. Marty Turco, Dallas Stars
5. Alexei Kovalev, Montreal Canadiens

"Let's see . . . I just turned away 26 of 26 shots and recorded a playoff shutout, and the other goalie gets the third star. Screw hockey, I'm going to go on www.dateahornycelebritygoalie.com and get my stars where they really matter!"

What is with all this retarded "iamarichassmoron.com" crap? As for the 3 stars, I only saw the Stars game and Richards was dominant! The trade paid big dividends in this game and the Stars are looking good. Unfortunately for the Stars, the Wings are looking pretty darn good as well! Still a long way to go but I'm looking forward to a Stars/Wings matchup.

I am a Dallas stars fan and I say that only to let you know I am not biased. Franzen should be on the Conn Smythe watch list but... oh wait lets put malkin and crosby up there instead because they finaly made it to the playoffs and the NHL wants nothing more than for its posterbiys to recieve all the awards and win the cup. Come on get real, The best team to date is the Red Army. If anyone wants to win the cup they must defeat Detroit.... Not the Penguins! Go Dallas GO!!!

exactly Joel S.... just like the NBA where they are showcasing this Boston vs LA thing. They want that matchup more then anything and i am sure they will have things minipulated as much as they can to do it. The NHL has slapped this posterboy/tag on crosby and malkin and what have they really done? nothing.. win a cup or two with these guys or see how they fair out in 2 or 3 more yrs in the regular season and playoffs. Better yet i hope this team makes it to the cup finals and lets see them play Detroit, or Dallas see how they fair against them...

You would think that after being picked as first star on this list twice and second star once, not to mention leading all players in the playoffs in goals (7) Johan Franzen would be added to the Conn Smythe watch.

sure, the penguins are undefeated. they played an injury depleted senators team and got lucky to beat the rangers in both games. they were down 3-0 in game one and somehow got the win and in game two the referee blew the whistle too quickly and the goal that should've counted for the rangers didn't, so don't tell me the penguins are ultradominant because they aren't. they have gotten a lot of lucky breaks. the west is where the cup is won and any real hockey fan knows that.

First the refs blow every game. That's hockey and "any real hockey fan knows that." Second no one said the Pens were dominant, they're fans sticking up for their team. By the way, look at their record, it speaks for itself. Second in goals scored... where is the west on that chart. 1 in the top 5, good ratio. speaking of ratios, " the west is where the Cup is won", here is a stat for you, East teams lead the Cup series 45 to 34 in the West.

Let's stop and take a look at this Malkin and Crosby both have 10 points in 6 games all the other 8 players in the top 10 have played in 7 to 9 games. Mathmatically they are out scoring the rest of the feild. then you swing in the fact that the pens have out scored their opponets 23 to 9. for those of you that are slow thats just under 4 goals a game to giving up a stingy goal and a half a game. but thats right the pens get all the breaks. how is that did they restructure the play off system and I missed it. did they "arrainge" for the "poster boys" to get the match ups they got. Again for those of you who are slow it's a no. lets look at the match up with the rangers, the pens are the only ramaining team to be higher seeded then thier opponent and have lost the season series. so yeah they "arrainged" for that cake walk. Face it the pens are just the hottest team play the most like a team.

How is Malkin the poster child of the NHL when he can't even speak English and does NO interviews? I understand that Crosby is, but no way Malkin is. Evgeni Malkin hardly does interviews with anyone from Pittsburgh, let alone the rest of the league and as a posterchild.
P.S., If your a true Penguins fan, you would know it's not "go pens go" and rather, Let's Go Pens.

The Pens dominated the West in the regular season, going 8-1-1 against the Pacific and Northwest Divisions. Add in that nice stat Chris gave you and it looks like your "West is where the cup is won" thing doesn't hold up very well. By the way, coming back from 3-0 isn't "luck" you just call it that because you can't even be fair and give them credit for that. And that whistle was exactly what the refs are trained to do - the refs did not blow the call. If you watched that game the Pens were the better team and you make your breaks. Also, Franzen averages 1.25 points/game and Malkin and Crosby are both 1.67 points/game. Statswise maybe he should make it over Kovalev, but not Crosby and Malkin.

Can someone get a note to Carey Price to get a new goalie glove??!! Not sure if it isn't broken in yet or what, but that thing is nothing but trouble. That is his weak link. Someone get that youngster a new glove. Make the change and watch the series change. Habs/Pens and Wings/Stars with a Pens/Wings Stanley cup series. peace

i like to see all this. its nice to see everyone voicing their opinions. so heres mine. 1. detroit will choke again and not make the cup finals...its their presidents trophy curse....congrats dallas fans. 2. the east finals will be a turnpike series won in 5 games by pittsburgh. 3. if youve been paying attention to the above, you will notice that i am calling a dallas/pittsburgh finals. those are the 2 hottest teams still in it and i cant see any teams cooling them off until they meet each other.
p.s. you have to be lucky and good...good players and to cohesion win games and so do lucky bounces

I can't see Philly vs. Pittsburgh w/ Pittsburgh winning in 5. If those teams were to meet.... i see at least 6. But remember, Philadelphia is up only 2-1 and Pittsburgh could easily drop two in New York and we're back at square one.

    # 21 I will finish your predictions.... Stars in 6 over the penguins if they end up playing each other. Yes the penguins are playing good but for crying out loud it the East and their competion there is lacking compared to the West. FACT!!
