No. 1 star: Ty Conklin, Detroit Red Wings

In Detroit's first game in Pittsburgh since the Stanley Cup Finals, two former Penguins haunted the home team. Marian Hossa, heckled mercilessly by the Pittsburgh faithful, scored his 30th goal of the season on a great individual effort in the third period to give the Wings a two-goal lead. But Conklin gets the nod here for making every stop he needed to make in a 25-save effort, combining with a stout defense to lead the Wings to a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was ConkBlock's sixth shutout of the season, as he won both starts on the weekend to put the pressure on net-mate Chris Osgood for the starting job.

No. 2 star: Mikko Koivu, Minnesota Wild

Koivu's slick pass in the third period set up Antti Miettinen's shorthanded goal to give the Wild a lead, but the Edmonton Oilers would tie the game on a Sam Gagner goal about 10 minutes later. The teams went into the fourth round of the overtime shootout; that's when Koivu confidently beat Dwayne Roloson for the winner, giving the Wild a critical extra point in the Western Conference playoff race with a 3-2 shootout victory.

No. 3 star: Jeff Carter, Philadelphia Flyers

With Thomas Vanek out of commission for at least three weeks, it could become a two-man race for the NHL's lead in goals scored. Carter now has 34 goals on the season after scoring a pair in the Flyers' 3-2 win at the Atlanta Thrashers. He used his speed to get behind the defense for the game's first tally, and then rifled a Scott Hartnell pass for what would be the winner in the third.

Honorable Mention: Marty Turco was brilliant in making 25 saves, improving to 9-2-2 in his last 13 games as the Dallas Stars defeated the Nashville Predators, 4-1. Brad Richards had a power-play goal and a shorthanded assist. Jason Arnott scored his 20th in a losing effort. ... Pavel Datsyuk had two goals in the Detroit victory. ... Antero Niittymaki (29 saves) got the start and the win for the Flyers. ... Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 22nd in a losing effort.

Dishonorable Mention: Dan Ellis' 18-save performance was not the way to win a goaltending job in Nashville. ... Finally, there was enough blame to go around for the Pittsburgh Penguins' national television stinker against the Detroit. But spotlight on Miro Satan, who played just 9:37 and appears to be taking up residence in Michel Therrien's doghouse.

While were talking about the stars on the ice Sunday afternoon where would you place Crosby? The "face" of the NHL would be lucky to crack the top 10 in that game.

Pittsburg is learning of another great player in Detroit. His name is ........ Team Effort ! Just shows you that having 2 big shots with all the media attention and big numbers doesn't win games ! Oh ...... did someone say "Yankees" }:-(

Honorable mention to refs and NBC crew during the Wings/pens game. Good flow during the game and an objective broadcast.

Hossa scores his 30th goal in his return to Pittsburgh.
Judas sold Jesus out for 30 pieces of silver.
    coincidence?

I'm sorry, but comparing the Pens to the Yankees has to be one of the absolute dumbest things I have ever read. The Pens have two stars because they DRAFTED them, and aren't exactly tossing money at every big name free agent around.

After hearing the crowd heckling Hossa I started praying for him to score...When he did I was out of my seat with a smile on my face...Games like that remind me how much I like to beat Pittsburgh...

Imagine that! Miro "Here I Am, Skating In Circles At the Blueline, Waiting For the Outlet Pass" Satan is in the coach's doghouse. Doghouse being the apt metaphor, as Miro's been "dogging it" for years. The fact the Islanders gave up on him should have said something.

Hey Pens fans...I thought Pittsburgh was supposed to play yesterday. How about Cindy? Was he injured yesterday? Because I sure didn't see your savior on the ice. I can hear the crickets chirping from the lack of Pens fans bashing the Wings and / or trying to come up with some excuse for getting straight up smoked in their building by the defending Cup champs. 3 - 0, in your building. Have fun missing the playoffs Cynthia and company. The Wings OWNED you in the Finals and OWNED you yesterday.

30 pieces of silver, JS? Are you kidding? Are Pens fans that pathetic and bitter? You have Cindy Crosby, the face of the NHL, the love object of none other than Buttman himself. What more could you ask for? Besides some teamwork and more wins I mean.

I yawn, yet laugh, at that lack of creativity in your post. We have enough bridges in Pittsburgh. Do yourself a favor and throw yourself from one.

Why is the face of the game (AKA Crosby) such a pu$$y , I like how he two-hands maltby after maltby put a clean check on him. Crosby is said to be somewhat of a tuff guy, i have never seen it. The only time he tries mixing it up is when he has tuff temamates are on the ice with him, he will then go after the skilled or smaller guys on the other team. Even then he would rather use his stick than fists. I have been disappointed with him and all the coverage he gets. Crosby is the biggest whiner in the game, everyone knows it! He acts as if he should get "get out of jail free cards" because he is a superstar. Every stoppage he complains to the ref about something, why doesn't he man up and drop the gloves? oh yeah, he would rather use a stick. The NHL is trying to get to boost ratings, Crosby isn't the answer, not now or ever! Yeah they replay some of his goals or assists, why don't they replay the slashes and other cheap shots he puts on players? Crosby is a joke, thanks Canada
Another note, does anyone hate the analysts between periods on NBC? The two smucks on there are more boring than watching paint dry! And who the hell is the guy between the benches during the games? Pierre? What were all the good jobs like water and stick boy taken?

One thing I don't understand about the "Hossa is a sell out" signs yesterday at Mellon Arena: How is taking a smaller contract being a "sell out?" Isn't that the exact opposite of being a sell out?

Hossa went where he has a chance to win a cup, It is every hockey child's dream to hoist the cup. Yeah its nice to make a good pay check, but its the cup they are all after.
Love to see the Penguins lose and to get shutout; ultimate bonus.

Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin yada yada yada. What does Pavel Datsyuk have to do to get some respect. He should ALWAYS be on the short list of the leagues greatest players. His line dominated the game yesterday (with Zetterberg on it) and his line dominated a hot Chicago team during the winter classic (without Zetterberg) on it. He may not be the face of the NHL but he and Ovechkin are the most entertaining to watch players in the league. Cmon Wysh learn how to spell this guys name and give him a lil luv when you break out the greatest list. While everybody in Pittsburg is whinin about Crosbys linemates not being good enough Datsyuk is making his linemates better with his own great play. Think Lemieux, Yzerman, Gretzky. Thats what makes a player great. I dont mean to put Dats in they're catagory yet but he is playing the game the right way and will put together "a body of work" in his career that may land him there if he continues to do it without getting hurt.
