A few thoughts on the big Ryan Smyth(notes) trade last night before returning to our respective potato salad and beer comas ...

The trade, which saw Captain Canada move from the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night to LA for defensemen Kyle Quincey(notes) and Tom Preissing(notes) and a fifth-round draft pick next year, is an interesting leap forward for the Los Angeles. Kings. He'll make $6.25 million against the cap until 2012. He had a nice rebound year for the Avs last season, but his numbers have been in decline. Because of his style of play, the guy is perpetually hurt, even when he plays through it.

Kings GM Dean Lombardi acknowledged some of these points in his chat with Inside The Kings last night, but also noted that his team has coveted Smyth since the trade deadline and had him ranked higher on their wish list than "some of the free-agent guys we weren't willing to extend ourselves on." His most interesting answer came when asked what Smyth brings to the team:

"The position he plays, the role he plays -- as a top-six guy who plays left wing -- and most importantly, the way he plays. That was the most important thing in terms of why we were aggressive. We lack guys who are going to go to the blue (area in front of the net) and score hard goals and pay the price. He's not flashy, he doesn't make highlight films, but he wins hockey games. You've got a guy who is known as 'Captain Canada.' As far as his character and his competitiveness, this is the type of player that we need."

He also mentioned Mike Ricci(notes) in reference to this deal. So now we're changing the Kings' grade to an A-plus-plus-plus, obviously ...

Smyth and defenseman Rob Scuderi(notes), signed from the Pittsburgh Penguins this week, might be a little too blue collar for Hollywood, but they're perfect for this Kings team as mentors and leaders. Brayden Schenn sharing the ice with Ryan Smyth in the near future is pretty much a dream scenario from a developmental standpoint.

As for the Avalanche ... well, rebuilding is now the Rocky Mountain way. The first of what should be many salary dumps with middling returns. (Tom Preissing wasn't even listed on the NHL roster for the Kings.) Mile High Hockey is displeased in a very PG-13 way. Adrian Dater of the Denver Post spells out the owner Stan Kroenke's philosophy as Smyth goes west:

We all knew this day would come, Av-aholics. These are the lean days, the rebuilding times. But it doesn't take a lot to get back to respectability in this game. The Avs are assembling some good young pieces (Duchene, Shattenkirk) and a 1-2 up the middle of Stastny and Duchene should be pretty damn good in the future. But for the present? It's going to continue to be tough for a while.

The Avs still have some salary to shed, but Dater's right: They could be the team in the Kings' situation sooner rather than later with the talent already in the pipeline ... and by completely bottoming out for the next few years. Ask the Penguins how that works out sometimes.

Good trade. With the quality of the Kings defense, and the depth they have in their system, along with this pick up, the playoffs are definitely a possibility.

This trade, and Lombardi's comments, are why Kovalev, Tanguay, and others are sweating right now. Basically the remainder UFAs aren't perceived to be worth the cap hit, even at a reduced rate (although probably at a *very* reduced rate, i.e. $1-mil level). So instead teams are looking to trades to pick up proven commodities and offset some salary.

    1) If Smyth is worth that much, Kubina couldn't have yielded a 4th or 5th along with Exelby as well??
    2) And this is how you tank a year. You don't pick up a million goalies at the trade deadline and miss the top 5 pick because of one last win of the season.... you play CuJo for 25 games and hope he goes something like 3-22.
Burke had too much pride to lose last year? Pride will lose to Intelligent Team Building every time.

Oh, and happy ID-4 to all you wacky American's down south, with your green money and two-party system. But no worries, we love you in Canada.
And if any aliens show up, I'm going to Will Smith's house...

I was hoping the Avs could get better value for him, but alas, I'm talking about the Avalanche of the past few years, not the Avalanche of the good years when they made good decisions. This team keeps disappointing me more and more these days...
But hey, we got Duchene right?!? *sigh*

It's an okay deal to but I would rather keep that young defensive core together and possibly make this trade for Smyth... Preissing,a prospect/or 2 and a 5th round/maybe a 5th/7th also... But keep Quincey, your best offensive defensemen..If Lombardi would of have been smart and scrude.. He had enough space to go for a killing this UFA market year,he put Smyth who is almost at the end of career and a 30 goal scorer at best over guys that make 40 - 50 goals per season? What happen to going young?...Most of the UFA's out there were younger than Smyth...Plus the Kings,if you really think about it have way too many prospects that will never make the Kings roster because they are so many of them.. But not worry,The Kings alway seem to give up on their prospects. aka... Boyle,MoulsonSydor,Huet etc. -- They have enough space even now to sign someone like Sykora,Tanguay, but Dean won't because he says it's bout us ( the fans ) what we would like the team to be like ...But he just prove that is not the case by saying that Smyth was his main guy over everyone else.. Well,we just have to wait and see... again. but I tell you right now,Quincey will be missed, especially on P.P. --- I would trade Williams,Ivanans to Boston for Kessel, to be with Stoll and Smyth...Sign either or/and Tanguay,Sykora or Kotalik to be on thje 3rd line with Handzus and Simmonds to provide not only defense but a little more scoring on that line aswell............

the Avs need to rebuild their team, no better time to start than now. However, no fans want to see their teams bottom out, but as pointed out, the Penguins were crap for a few years in a row, got very high draft picks which they then used to build the foundation of the team that won the cup and is set up for more success the next few seasons at the very least. It's a bit of a fine line for a team, whether to rebuild or do the mix-match thing with free agents and or trades. This is why a team like say the Rangers never get that top guy, because they never really gut the team and start over, they never get the top draft picks, so they cannot rebuild like the Penguins did. Always being in the middle of the pack might help with ticket sales in the here and now, but the only true way to build a long-term successful team is through the draft, which means suffering through some lean seasons to get the top draft picks.

Smyth DOES make highlight reel goals, though. From this past season, vs. the Kings no less.

Avs got shafted on this trade. A guy who just had back surgery, a journeyman defenseman who everyone knows sucks, and a 5th rounder? Wow.

The only Av last season working hard every game. The worst part is if they were just dumping to save money, they didn't end up saving that much. I defiantly see another last in the west finish for the Avs. But hey, the kings are really starting to look pretty scary, I think this will be a great year for them.

Great deal Avs. Lets get rid of Hannan, Clark and Tucker and Ill be thrilled. Lappy, Arnason, Smyth and Raycroft all gone is so nice, no more dead weight holding us down in the cap. Go get fan fav in Tanguay and re-up Sakic for 1 more year and we might even stand a fighting shot next year for 8th place if Anderson can play well.

#9- Boyle is an AHL caliber player...if he would have played to his size he would be around still.
I think trading Kyle is and will be one of those "mistakes" that we (the fans of LA) talk about years down the line.

Quincey emerged last year as sort of a revelation for the Kings blue line. Already rebuilding around Johnson and Doughty, with the signing of Scuderi, Quincey became the expendable defensive piece (surprising, considering how many times Johnson's name got floated in rumors for the past week). Not a bad move for Colorado, really, considering their situation. What's curious to me is how this will affect another goal scoring LW, Alexander Frolov, a guy who has, for the past three years, been one of the quietest scoring LWs in the game (goal totals of 35, 23, and 32, scoring 197 points in 230 games, and a +24 for his career of six seasons on LA's abysmal second team). I'd like to think they'd have given him a more starring role finally, but as is typical, it's gone the other way.

What a day. The Kings are loading up, meaning my favorite team (Stars) will have another brutal division rival to deal with along with San Jose. Doesn't bode well for Dallas, which hasn't done much this off-season and most likely won't.

great deal for the kings...it make look like a huge blow to salary for kings...but subtract the 2.75 preissing was earning in the minors...and the huge salary boost quincey would demand next season when he's an RFA ....AND the declining salary of smyth over the next three years...6.5, 5.5, then 4.5 million a season...it really isn't too shabby for the kings...
even with the 3.5 million Johnson will get, and the 5.5 million/year extension Frolov will (should) get next year, the extensions handed to quick, and bernier in a few and the eventual extensions of drew doughty, simmonds and moller, the team will be fine with money. all looks up in Los Angeles. plus, cloutier's buyout will end next season...thats a million saved right off the bat!
    GO KINGS GO!
