Puck Daddy - NHL

It's said every coach is hired to one day be fired; that was never more evident than when Craig Hartsburg was given the Ottawa Senators' bench last summer.

He was a completely pedestrian choice, hired because he was a disciplinarian for an egomaniacal roster; or because of his Canadian junior hockey fame; or because Florida Panthers Coach Peter DeBoer wanted too much job-security and money as the frontrunner.

So while DeBoer is being touted as a Jack Adams candidate while turning the Panthers into playoff contenders, Hartsburg was fired today by the Senators after going 17-27-7 for 41 points -- third-worst in the NHL. If his job was to light a fire under every player not named Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson or Jason Spezza, he failed; hell, according to one Columbus Blue Jackets player, Spezza basically quit, too. The team was an unmitigated disaster, and when Hartsburg wasn't exacerbating its problems he was also helpless to fix them.

That said, Hartsburg wasn't exactly the root of all the team's ills. The 6th Sens' immediate (and NSFW) reaction sees the firing as a scape-goating of the highest order, and it's hard to disagree that the players deserve the majority of the blame here. (More from The 6th Sens on the firing here.)

Of course, Hartsburg didn't hire himself, either.

GM Bryan Murray, who has been unable to reshape the roster or hire an effective coach after the team's Cup run a few years back, should take a major, job threatening hit here. So does Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who refused to allow drastic measures to be taken before the season had slipped away. Firing the coach one year into a three-year deal may begin the process of blowing this team up; in which case, does Melnyk then have to strap a bomb to himself like he suggested his critics should?

Bruce "Malkin to the Kings" Garrioch has some great reactions to the firing on Off The Posts this morning:

It's only appropriate on Groundhog Day the Senators have fired coach Craig Hartsburg. I mean: What else is new? John Paddock went in February last year. These guys are coach killers.

It would appear Cory Clouston is going to take over as head coach. That's shocking. He hasn't proven himself at the American Hockey League level. He's described as being tough and doesn't care about hurting anybody's feeling.

Another tough and uncaring drill sergeant, huh? So they fired Craig Hartsburg to promote another Craig Hartsburg.

If nothing else, the former Senators coach can compare notes with Barry Melrose about players quitting, mismanagement from above and the inability of a pedestrian coach with an old school mindset to make a difference anymore in today's NHL.

Where oh where would the Senators be with a coach like Todd McLellan or Pete DeBoer? Not five points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs like they are now.

UPDATE: A couple of Ottawa blog reactions this morning. Sens Army has more about the firing and the new (one assumes) interim coach:

It's fitting that the Senators just lost to a reborn Washington Capitals team, because this Clouston decision sounds a lot like people trying to find a way to replicate Bruce Boudreau's success with the Caps. Boudreau was recruited from the Hershey Bears and named interim head coach of the Caps in November 2007, and his success his bosses dropped the 'interim' tag and kept him on full time. With Clouston, if things work out (and there's a pretty loose definition of that right now), he sticks around. If not, he heads back to Bingo next year, and the Sens do the interview process for the third off-season in a row.

It's also interesting to note that some Binghamton fans have been calling for Clouston's head to roll after a few consecutive poor seasons for the B-Sens, this season notwithstanding.

Meanwhile, our old pal Erin Nicks at The Universal Cynic thinks Hartsburg looks like "a poor man's Dicky Barrett" when clearly he's a younger poor man's Robert Blake. Beyond that, she brings up the name that will be mentioned on the hour in the Canadian media until it happens:

We're hearing rumblings of Pat Quinn (and no, not his stomach). Apparently he named was dropped last night within the inner sanctum as the knife fell. True? No? Stay tuned.

We've heard for weeks that Quinn was going to either Ottawa or Pittsburgh, depending on which ax dropped first. The Senators make perfect sense, because they're star-[expletive]'ers of the highest order when it comes to coaches, aren't they?

The Sens are to coaches as Florida is to the elderly; a place to die.

The Sens need to get a broom and sweep that place clean or the next guy's going to have the same problem. The roster can't be THAT full of ego or they'd be ashamed to be playing the way they are.

The Sens should hold a fire-sale, much like the Caps did in 2004...Alfredsson, Heatley and Spezza will bring in a *ton* of prospects...

This team is a mess because of the incompetent management of Bryan Murray. Hartsburg is being made into the fall guy for Murray's complete inability to run a hockey team. But I must say as a Leafs fan I find the whole situation hilarious.

Are you suggesting that a team can't rely on one line and shaky goaltending to win?

The Sens need to start over from scratch just like the Flyers did during their rock bottom season of 06-07. The teams have very similar problems: 11 consecutive playoff seasons suddenly down the drain, a bad job by the general manager, and crappy defense and goaltending. What helped the Flyers improve? A new GM (Paul Holmgren) who understands how to win in the "new" NHL, unlike Bob Clarke. Ottawa will not improve until Bryan Murray is out, whether he resigns like Clarke did or Melnyk finally fires him, and makes some shrewd moves to improve the team. Philly got a great return when they shipped out Peter Forsberg, essentially four good to great players and a draft pick. Ottawa can do the same with their stars. As much as the Sens don't want to admit it, it's rebuilding time.

I bet somewhere John Muckler is laughing. The Senators essentially blew up their team because of a failed attempt to trade for Gary Roberts.

I will have to disagree with the majority opinion. To me the Sens look better on paper than quite a few NHL teams (certainly better than Florida). A truly good coach like Boudreau, DeBoer or McLellan could do something with this bunch. NHL GMs need to get through their head that the time of coaches who just yell at their team and tell them to work hard is over. It's all about X's and O's now. Those who are good at a highly cerebral, scientific approach to the game succeed while the old school coaches fail time and time again.

Thats funny, I say the same thing about Bettman, to your point why Murray is still involved with the Sens on any level is beyond me. As a Sabres fan I love to see them flounder. Maybe someone in the Sens Organization should realize that talent doesn't win Cups, it helps; but there is a lot more to it.

god, the schadefreude in this entire situation is off of the charts!
thank you eugene melnyk for letting murray make a few more decisions as gm before firing him. i can't wait to see what he screws up at the deadline! imagine if jfj had worked the leafs' deadline last year before being fired. the team would have been villified.
i can't wait to see what happens next in the ottawa clutterbuck.

The players may be at fault instead of the coach, but you can't fire 23 millionaire bums all at once. That's why you fire the coach and hope for the best.

Once again, the coach gets fired because the GM can't find his way to the Executive Wash Room without a road map. I can't figure out, along with many of the rest of you, why Bryan Murry still has his job. He must have pictures of Eugene Melnyk in compromising positions. I'm not a Sens fan, but I don't like to see any franchise run into the ground by incompetent management. Good luck, Cory. I suggest your first move should be to remind a certain player on your roster that the team is the Ottawa Senators, NOT the Ottawa Spezzas.

After the euphoria of Heatley wore out they became a team of egos, well a line of them anyway. they just fell too in love with having 3 outta 5 or 6 of the top point getters in the leauge. except it was one goal and 2 assists and on the board it was still one goal.
break them up and start anew.

I don't care what Murray says, the Sens are in a rebuilding period. I say the Sens should play to lose while trading Spezza, Alfredsson AND HEatly in order to possibly get 4 first rounds picks and build the new Senators around them. The Sens have never had an identity. They have always had some awesome skills, but they've never had the player to build aroundliek the Caps or Pens, nor have they had the consistent goal like the puck handling of the Wings the physicality of the Ducks or the defense of the Wild and Devils.
Tear it down from the top and try to do what PHX and the Hawks have done quite well. Sell the old guys off for some great young talent and build the team with a consistent focus. If Murray can take the flack for two or three years and rebuild this team with a real foundation Ottawa will become a consitent playoff team.

Hartsburg is paying the price as many other coaches have on very poor teams. The Sens had 3 above average hockey players and no one can coach a 1 line team to the Cup. The big line has quit and look no better than a 4th line unit. Heatley has been a big disappointment and can never fit into a system no matter where he plays as most systems require you to come back in your own end more than once a period. However keep up the good work sens finishing somewhere above the last 5 would be a fitting spot for a team playing in that non sport town.

i think that this is the last month we will see "the pizza line" in ottawa...
the pizza has sat out all night, it's stale, and nobody wants to take a bite...on top of that, someone has taken the pizza box to cover up a pile of vomit that has crustily dried on the floor overnight...
the ottawa senators i think have officially imploded on themselves....
