Puck Daddy - NHL

The NHL has had its say, Tom Hicks agreed and now it's Dallas Stars Coach Dave Tippett addressing the indefinite suspension of Sean Avery for saying that other NHL players have had sexual intercourse with women he used to date.

From the coach of the last-place Stars:

"It's something that the league has taken action on and our owner has supported it. I think everyone in our room believes there is an integrity that has to go into the game -- a respect for the game and a respect for your opponents, and Sean crossed that line."

Stars GM Brett Hull's comments on the matter are here.

In case you're wondering what crossing the lines of respect and integrity looks like, here's Avery's "press conference" today in Calgary:

Did you crack a smile? Did you roll your eyes? Did you see anything that would warrant swift punishment from the National Hockey League?

I'd say the NHL couldn't embarrass itself any further, but I haven't seen what the "definite" suspension of Avery will look like.

If there's any defending Gary Bettman's decision to suspend Avery before tonight's game at the Calgary Flames, it's for the sake of safety. There was every chance that Dion Phaneuf was going to knock Avery into British Columbia. There was every chance that a Stars player may have paid a price for Avery's indignation, both in his "sloppy seconds" crack and his previous comments about Jarome Iginla.

From a player safety perspective, the NHL has the high ground.

But in the past, when situations threatened to get out of hand between teams with bad blood, the League would opt for back-channel threats of zero tolerance. Think back to huge brawls like Buffalo and Ottawa; Round 2 is always a letdown, because it was made clear before the game that the silly stuff would be met with a swift kick to the wallet.

And that's where the NHL looks absolutely foolish today. The League suspending Avery for opening his yap and making a frat boy joke elevates his antics back to legendary status. This is the Avery Rule all over again; Avery looks irresponsible but mischievous, and the League looks like it's making special considerations because the class clown acted up. Give him 10 games, give him 30; he wins again.

Seriously, if the NHL were half as vigilant on hits to the head as they are for Sean Avery's nonsense, Simon Gagne might not hear church bells every time he closes his eyes.

As The Forechecker writes:

If Avery gets more than a single game suspension out of this, the NHLPA should call the league out on the carpet for prioritizing PR above player safety.

If Gary Bettman was as smart as he thinks he is, he would have picked up the phone to Tom Hicks and demanded the Stars suspend Avery. Make it a team issue rather than a League issue. Turn Avery back into a locker-room cancer instead of clouding the issue by elevating him into a free-speech martyr.

In the end, suspending Avery proves Avery correct that this League is disinterested in creating a compelling product to which fans want to pay attention.

Once again, Sean Avery is the biggest story in sports tonight. Once again, the NHL was squandered the moment. As Tapeleg put it: "NHL Renders Flames - Stars Unwatchable by Suspending Avery."

Two final thoughts: If Avery had said the "sloppy seconds" line after a game in the locker room, the NHL would have condemned it but there'd be no suspension. His grandstanding is his sin.

We know this because Ian White of the Toronto Maple Leafs wasn't suspended after telling the media that Ilya Kovalchuk will "get what's coming to him" the next time they meet.

I guess Avery's joke is more offensive than the threat of continued violence. Maybe if White has added, "And the second time, it'll get reeeeeeeeeeal sloppy."

Second ... is anyone else thinking there's way, way more to this than we know about? Avery's smirking "press conference" certainly seemed like a counterpunch, didn't it?

sean avery is mostly guilty of not being funny. that was the lamest bit of staged comedy since brian burke did his whole "sedin is not english for punch me."

    Great take.
    NHL suspension logic
Hit to the head from behind that ends someone's season: 1-3 games
    Saying "sloppy seconds": indefinite suspension
Nice to know the puritans running the league would now like to become the speech police and tell the players what they can and can't say. Wouldn't want to let some of the personalities in the league be themselves. No, will go ahead and roll Robo-Crosby out there to lull everyone to sleep with his canned answers and lack of opinion on anything.
I think it's time to go from the Avery Rule to the Avery Section of the Rules, where Bettman lists all the things he can't do.

another reason to despise Bettman the way I see it...absolutely ridiculous....way to go Gary, you just made this a much bigger story than it should be...this is still a mans game right? some good smack talk and Sean Avery ... love'm or hate'm makes things interesting...no need to watch the Stars anymore (no Morrow and now no Avery)

    Good point,
The NHL extinguished a Flame with a Star. They had a marketable game/rivalry on their hands and shot it down.
    0 point Flames/Stars game.
2 points Avery for making it a game.

That's not a huge deal, disrespectful yes, but indefinietly suspended? No. He should miss a game and get a huge fine, but that's about it. Criticizing the officials, teamates or coach is worse than a stupid joke said to the press. The language itself wasn't obscene.

Nearly 70 percent of TSN.ca users think the suspension should be 3+ games. Avery's misogynist comment was vulgar and entirely inappropriate.
I'm not sure what hits to the head has to do with anything here. If you want to make a case about hits to the head deserving more punishment I'm with you. But the false equivalence, one-is-tied-to-the-other in your posts is bizarre.

I actually think he should go, he is a punk, he is a cheap shot artist, and he is a basically a sneak thief. He never comes right at people, he dares em o do something silly and taps around the line full time. Wysh can whine away about wanting personalities in the gae except noone seems to recall Gretzky, Lemuiex, LaFluer, Bossy, On and on, had none eiher in the terms of other sports Ghetto and one trash talk BS. Hockey is a sport of self policing, hih intgrity, and high moral ground all the time. Always has been (hint, the stanley cup is called LORD stanleys cup). I have quit watching most other N.A. sports because i do not need a Martin Lawrence movie to on ice. I have no need for self congradulating athletes looking for their next sponsor with a show oat designed moe for sports center than actual real life celebration.
Do we really want a league of 30 second elebratins for checking a guy in the end boards? DO we wat athletes in jail for shooting thmselves in the leg in strip clubs?
Avery is a cancer, he is all about himself. I like my team first sport. The patriots almost made the NFL see it, i prefer not to lose it. Boot em for life. Take a few others like him out while your at it,

Isn't this the league that endorses your momma jokes? Then again whatever happened to G.S. Aubin after that commercial.
Look at you Wysh all smart and stuff. Well put. Makes me feel proud I choose your blog to vomit my comments on daily.
I will post this here as well, for all of you wishing to speak directly with Bettman you can call 1-877-645-6696 on his radio show Thursday 4pm -5pm. Maybe you should tell him Hockey should have more decorum like curling.

how well does avery's question "you got a camera?" sum him up as a player? totally agree that this should have been handled by the stars organization, even if they needed some coercing from the nhl. to me it seems like there's got to be so much more going on behind the scenes, though. how many times do you think tippett or hull have had to sit down with avery and tell him, "alright, sean, knock this crap off"

Avery's mistake was rehearsing it and calling in the cameras to do it. If he does it on the ice he cracks his teammates up and probably gets the reaction he wants from Phaneuf. We all know he wouldn't have manned up and faced Dion, he would have turtled like the chikensh*t he is. Look at the Dallas Stars' comments when asked about it, it's fairly obvious they've had enough of the gong show as well. Dallas has enough problems without Avery tweaking every team to the max.

Avery is a God. The league has one of its best (albeit sometimes annoying) marketing tools and they keep screwing it up by trying to be "mainstream." NHL GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR A** AND LET THIS STUFF PLAY OUT ON THE ICE! Unless, of course, your objective is to get a league full of robots playing against each other, void of any emotion, rehearsing the same sorry lines after each game, collecting paychecks and heading home. Sounds fun to me! The players in my "Blades of Steel" video game have more personality than most of today's players. We need more Avery's in this league...then maybe more people would start watching.

Avery did nothing wrong. NOTHING. This is all so silly. Avery is right, the NHL is a joke. Like the lockout didn't already show that. Like having a big cigar in your mouth for a press photo. Like saying "......YOU STINK" as your catchphrase.

Sean Avery is the closest thing to the Hanson Brothers that this league has. I could care less about this sport, and honestly, wouldn't even notice if it had folded. However, watching Sean Avery's interview on ESPN a couple months back actually made me buy a game ticket to see this guy play in my hometown. I'm even considering buying a jersey of his. Gary Bettman is living in a bizaro world, and is running his league like some Mormon church or something.....

He should get a good lawyer and sue this league and that fool Gary Bettman for all its worth. If Gary Bettman were suspended for all the stupid things he says and does, ...My site HABS INSIDE/OUT is primo uno.

That was just kinda Awkward, and very pointless. Its not like anyone inquired him about it, he went out of his way to get him self in trouble, he should be suspended from the NHL permanently just because he can't help but piss everyone off, like last play-off season, his shenanigans with Broduer were uncalled for, and if the Devils had lost that game, he would have had thousands upon thousands of crazy Devils fans on his back wanting to kick his ass. and a lot of them want to kick his ass anyway. It just seems like every year he has his ways of pissing the league off, pissing his opponents off, and most off all pissing hockey fans off. Someone needs to teach him a lesson he'll actually listen too.

Right or wrong, I don't think anybody will be shedding tears for Avery. I have a feeling that this was a 'lifetime achievement suspension' of sorts. There have been an abundance of things that were boarderlinining suspension, and I think the NHL believes he's crossed the line he's been heading towards for years. Now, I'm not saying that this suspension is right, but I do think it's about time that somebody somewhere told Avery that not everything he wants to say is acceptable.
And Jerome, if Avery makes you want to watch hockey (except if it's only to see if he gets his lunch FED to him), well, something is just wrong with that. Because he is surely no ambassador of the game, in any way, shape or form. And the NHL can't really advertise Heros vs. Villans like the WWE, because this is real. The NHL would have a serious lawsuit on it's hands if it got everybody jacked up to see Avery get destroyed on the ice, not that I would be opposed to seeing that happen, but I imagine that someone somewhere (a lawyer maybe) would find that in bad taste.

Give me a break. Love or hate Avery, the NHL has gotta pick it's battles. I'm having a hard time believing that this battle is most worthy. Let's concentrate our efforts on bigger problems with the NHL, Bettman. This should've been handled by the team if the team throught it was a problem. As far as Hull being "disappointed", he only can be disappointed in himself. He knew Avery, and knew what he was getting. If he wanted Avery to leave his personality (or lack thereof) at home, Hull shoudl be the first guy out there to realize that isn't going to happen. I don't have a problem with Avery. But if the team does, they should take care of it. Let the NHL worry about the bigger issues (and they have plenty of them).

Sean Avery is a jerk, but he doesnt deserve to be suspended for talking. He also should take Bettman and the NHL to court over this. As far as the TSN site, unless you are registered there, you dont realize its mostly a Canadiens run site. They have the 'Squeakiest wheels', and hate Avery because of an Anti French comment he made as a junoir player. Alot of things Montreal and their fans do are far worse, like ballot stuffing for All Star votes.

Holy Cow. How stupid and ignorant is the NHL. To suspend a player indefinitely for making a flip comment, when hockey players basically act out legal assaults on the ice on a daily basis, is plainly retarded.
