No. 1 star: Marty Turco, Dallas Stars
So Turco can win at Joe Louis Arena. No doubt that knowledge will come in handy if the Stars can force a Game 7 back in Detroit with a victory in Dallas on Monday. Saturday's first star goes as much to Turco the third defenseman as Turco the goalie, though both were outstanding in Game 5. Never one to shy away from leaving his crease, Turco initiated Dallas' first scoring rush by playing the puck to Niklas Hagman, who in turn banked a brilliant pass off the boards that sprung Brad Richards. No assist there for Turco, but his aggressiveness turned what could have been a partial Detroit break into a Dallas goal. The Stars' goalie later earned the primary assist on the game-winning goal when his attempted clearing pass bounced fortuitously off a Detroit stick and hit Joel Lundqvist in stride. Back in the relative safety of his crease, Turco made 38 saves, few better than an early gem against Dan Cleary that preserved the Stars' chances to score first.

No. 2 star: Joel Lundqvist, Dallas Stars
That new checking line from Game 4 worked out pretty well in Game 5. Dallas coach Dave Tippett started Loui Eriksson, Toby Peterson and Lundqvist on Saturday and the Stars did their best to work the matchup against Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk line. The Henrik Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Tomas Holmstrom line didn't register a point despite 14 shots on goal and Lundqvist's first goal since the opening round held up as the game-winner. That's a checker's dream.

No. 3 star: Jiri Hudler, Detroit Red Wings
The post-game consensus seemed to be that the Red Wings came out flat in Game 5. It wasn't Detroit's best effort, but the home team did outshoot the Stars 39-21, they held their own in the physical battles (hits were 21-20 in Dallas' favor) and the Red Wings manhandled the Stars in the faceoff circle, winning 41 of 61 draws. For all the criticism they'll face for letting Dallas back in this series, the Red Wings were two crisp line changes away from winning 1-0. The game-winning goal would have belonged to Hudler, who scored on Turco's doorstep on a nice second-effort play that tied the game 1-1 in the opening period.

Major penalty: Chris Chelios is going to play forever. Cheli's conditioning regimen is legendary, but perhaps another reason for his longevity is a strict adherence to short shifts. How else do you explain Chelios' decision to abandon defense partner Brett Lebda for a line change on Dallas' game-winning goal. Chelios had signaled for the change before Dallas gained possession of the puck, but it was an agonizingly slow process and replays seemed to indicate Chelios had time to abandon the effort when Marty Turco's pass fluttered in the air toward center ice. Instead he detoured to the bench – getting tied up with a Dallas player along the boards didn't help – and left Lebda to fend for himself on the 2-on-1 that led to Lundqvist's goal. Poor line changes played a role in both opposition goals Saturday.

Minor penalty: Despite a pre-game vow to make life miserable on Dallas goalie Turco, it sure seemed like Tomas Holmstrom's buttocks was conspicuously absent Saturday. Turco did face 39 shots in Game 5, but the traffic wasn't there as it had been previously in this series. Maybe that phantom call played a role (Dallas' ability to stay out of the penalty box was definately a factor). Maybe Homer was just off his game. He certainly came out looking like a horse's behind when he took a foolish roughing penalty that forced the Wings to play one-quarter of the final eight minutes short handed. Holmstrom had just absorbed a big hit when he decided to take a whack at a player on the Stars bench on his way off the ice. No doubt there was some chirping from the Dallas side, but that was no time for retribution.

OMG- out played again. I'm starting to get that old feeling.....Oh well, if we get beat, then we're not the best team, and I'll watch Dallas play for the cup. Hockey's , hockey.enjoy it. BTW the tripping call in the first period. It doesn't matter if you touch the puck first, and then trip the player, or just trip him. Tripping is tripping. In the old days, if you touched the puck first, it was OK. Not any more!! I have the Center Ice Package, so I see a lot of games. The trouble I have is sometimes they call it, sometimes they let it go.
(smaller print than usual) Go Wings !!

Wow! Big surprise seeing Dallas hanging in there. I'll give them credit. Numbers still in the Wings favor, they're definitely getting more shots and chances and look like the better team, but in the niumbers that count it's 3-2....

I'm sorry but I can't watch "stars hockey" it's like watching football or rugby and requires very little talent or excitement.
Get puck...dump in zone...wait for powerplay...score garbage goal...wash rinse repeat. I thought the NHL stopped this kind of dreck with the interference crackdown but they haven't been enforcing it for the last 2 rounds.
Don't get me wrong, I hate the Red Wings but at least they are watchable when playing a non-football team; I'd fathom to say whenever I see Franzen, Datsyuk, or Zetterberg with the puck my heart skips a beat.
Stars...please...go into the light...and here's a couple of teams off the top of my head that you can take with you(obviously they aren't in the playoffs now): Devils, Rangers, Wild, Sharks, Hurricanes, Ducks, and I'm sure there are others.
Ugh...at least there aren't two trap teams playing each other that would be brutal to watch. Imagine a Devils Stars series...wait...I can't. Yeah the stars have some scoring talent but they're bunk with the system; it will ruin Brad Richards' career mark my words.

For whatever reason, the Stars have decided to make a series out of this. The first two games were an aberration. Anyone who has watched the Stars this year knows that Dallas lost it's identity for the first seven periods of this series. Why? Maybe it was a hangover from the Sharks marathon. Maybe it was a short-sighted attempt to play speed hockey with the Wings. It really doesn't matter. What does matter is that after receiving the butt end of the stick at the end of game 3, Dallas has returned back to their roots. Defense is what got them here and defense is what will give them the best chance to win two more. The Wings will get more shoots on goal. The Wings will win more faceoffs. There is no need to take any unreasonable chances in an attempt to change these facts. As long as the Stars play within themselves and remain patient, this series is far from over. At the start of the series, Dallas tried to play Wings hockey and it was obvious that the Wings were in the Stars head. Now, as evident by Holmstrom's loss of self control, the Wings are frustrated and have been forced to play Stars hockey. Whoever has the momentum for the last two games will prevail. Right now that would be the Stars. Don't get me wrong, it would still be a huge upset. But, the pressure is on the Wings now. They are going to have to press. They are going to have to take the chances. This is precisely what the Stars want. Game 6 in Dallas is going to be electric. This series has now transcended into something more than the sum of it's parts. There is no need for trash talk. There is no need to "guarantee" a victory. This is NHL playoff hockey at it's finest and it speaks for itself.

The Stars won 2 more games than I thought they would! Detroit looked so awesome in the first 3 games I didn't think Dallas would win even one game. Still think it will be Detroit and Pittsburgh, Dallas did make a showing anyway.

Well gang, Gary Bet-man and the League got just what they wanted, makes you wonder if the lousy call in G4 would have changed the outcome..No matter, Detroit had ample opportunity to close it today at home and they looked tenative for a good part of the game. Turco was on, Stars D was solid most of the time and they were able to get some shots on the net and cash in their many fewer chances. I've seen most of the first 5 games and skill wise the Red Wings are definitely the better team. Heart wise? I'm not sure anymore, Actually given the talent discrepancy, that award has to go to Dallas. I remember it wasn't long ago Wings fans were already hoisting the 2007-08 Stanley Cup banner to the rafters, might be some teams including the Stars with something to say about that...We see how it winds up on the Ice.

James , a trip is a trip. You think so? We don't care that you see penalties. All wings fans see penalties on the opposition, they just don't see when their team does the infraction. trip, hook, flop, interference, lets just talk about good games for once.

Danny...bear hugging a guy who doesn't have the puck is not hockey it's garbage. What are you talking about hitting? Has Dallas ever seen a hip check? All I've seen in the Stars-Wings series is man love in the corners in the Stars zone; ie interference; that's not hitting that's unwatchable. Oh yeah I get up in the morning to see the wings come in then watch them goto the corner have "sexy time" in the corner then have the stars dump it back and wait for a stupid penalty. In the golden years guys got hammered all the time and they didn't wear half the pads that players wear today, but even then players were allowed to skate. Dump and chase hockey is about as exciting as watching soccer. The point of hockey is to score goals, defense means nothing when you can't score; if you want to watch guys cop a feel on each other I suggest you watch the cowboys choke choke choke choke choke.

neel are we watching the same games? The wings are a much better skating team but as far as hugging as you put it. I have seen wings do it all the time in the corner, pens, stars, flyers. What game are you watching that I am not? I want to be on the same page as you.
James I have no anger I laugh at the wings post here and if you were referring to a penalty on your team then I commend you. I am not use to it as most wings fans feel there is no such thing as a penalty on the iwings. Again I am sorry for going after you. That being said I am tired of seeing about penalties that part hasnt changed much and it doesnt take someone to be angry to agree.

Hey Neel, why the hell are you even commenting on these games? Sounds like you hate hockey in general.
Say what you like about the Stars, but they have more heart and fight harder than any NHL team I've seen. They have EARNED where they are at now. Whether they pull off a miracle series win remains to be seen, but they have proved that they are a force to be reckoned and refuse to give up!
Oh, and as for Brad Richards "bad" career move...yeah, moving from the bottom of the barrel to a team that's made it this far in the playoffs and seldom misses the playoff rounds year after year is really a bad move. I'm sure he'd rather be back in Tampa on the golf course right now instead of helping the Stars knock out the Ducks, Sharks and possibly make history by kicking out the "high and mighty" Red Wings after a 3-0 deficit! Yeah, his career is really in the toliet now...poor guy.
    GO STARS! I BELIEVE!
