No. 1 star: Scott Hartnell, Philadelphia Flyers
It wasn't the first hat trick of Scott Hartnell's career – his fifth, in fact – but the veteran winger never accomplished one quite like this during a 7-1 rout by his Philadelphia Flyers over the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Hartnell scored all three of his goals within 11:40 of the third period, his second hat trick in five games. Hartnell scored at even strength at 4:45, converted on the power play at 7:29 and capped the hat trick with another even-strength tally at 16:25. Hartnell added an assist for a four-point game during which he was a plus-4 and had five shots in 17:27 of ice time as the Flyers snapped the Capitals' five-game winning streak.

No. 2 star: Ilya Bryzgalov, Phoenix Coyotes
The team's key acquisition last season flashed some of that success Phoenix fans got used to seeing from Ilya Bryzgalov soon after the goalie was plucked off waivers from Anaheim in 2007-08 on Saturday night. Bryzgalov stopped 31 shots for his first shutout of the season as Phoenix blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-0. It was Bryzgalov's sixth shutout of his career.

No. 3 star: Nicklas Lidstrom, Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings' captain helped the hosts rally in the third period for a 6-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Lidstrom had three assists, including one on Detroit's third-period tying goal and then on the team's insurance empty-netter. Lidstrom was a plus-2 with three shots on goal and led the team with 25:43 of ice time.

Honorable mention: After going 19 straight games without a goal, Alexei Kovalev has three in three games after bagging the overtime winner for Montreal. … First NHL goals were scored by a pair of defensemen – Toronto's Jonas Frogren and St. Louis' Roman Polak. … Dave Jackson became the seventh active referee to skate his 1,000th game. … Jason Smith picked a heck of a time to collect his first goal and point of the season – 3:30 into overtime to make Ottawa winners over Dallas. … Nashville's Pekka Rinne stopped 23 shots for his third shutout of the month. … Defenseman Tomas Kaberle had three assists in Toronto's rout at Pittsburgh. … Sergei Kostitsyn scored two goals including the late-regulation tying tally in Montreal. … Three goalies came up big to lead their teams to a win – Philadelphia's Antero Niittymaki (47 saves), Chicago's Cristobal Huet (30 saves) and San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov (32 saves).

Dishonorable mention: The Stars have allowed five or more goals 13 times this season. … Ottawa's Antoine Vermette and Jason Spezza scored a goal apiece and were both minus-3 during a win – that's hard to do. … The New York Islanders have scored only 17 goals during their current 0-8-1 winless streak. … Tampa Bay has lost 17 of 19 games.

sounds to me like hartnell had a hell of a game......hat trick and an assist is generally good enough for the top star on most nights.....I also don't think I'm going out on a limb in saying that timbenson's team lost....
tampa better get its act together........there starting to get into the yucks territory when it comes to losing....

Wow, the Rangers absolutely dominated the third period against the Sharks. This was the first game of the season that felt like a playoff game. Such a great contest! Zherdev? A monster.

as much as everybody rags on hartnell for being a blockhead sometimes (and he is) the dude still knows how to play the game of hockey. the guy can skate, shoot, fight, and take his lumps in front of the net, and he seems to have a pretty good sense of humor about himself (ie. scott hartnell's glove and mitten toss for charity) and i'm pretty pleased to have him as a flyer no matter what the haters say even if he does almost single-handedly lose a game by throwing a glove now and again.
That being said, niitymaki should be a star and hartnell should be an honorable mention. Guy faced 25 shots in the first period. the score could have easily been reverse if not for him.

Joey Thornton was amazing for SJ tonight....SJ won when they should not have - a sign of a winner. Yes, they will get out of the second round this year. For Eastern conference fans, give the west the credit it deserves. The top six in the west are amazing, only BOS in the east can hang with them.

Nice pic of Ogie Oglethorpe. Dishonorable mention to Malkin, he coughed the puck up how many times tonight?

St. Louis basically called out his team after last nights loss and lamblasted them for not showing up for work. He says there are too few players willing to play to the level necessary to win on a consistent basis. Not too many want to be part of the solution. Sounds like Tampa made a big splash in the FA market last yr all right.

We can only hope that someone tossed a glove on the ice for Hartnell's hat trick.

Ah Tacks beat me to the Ogie comment so I'll have to settle for:
Congrats to Carrot top on scoring a hatrick. Too bad none of the hats fit him so the prop comic just wore the net on his mop.
    or
I didn't know the Orange Flyers jersey had a built in wool orange hoodie.

Ross, again I'm less than impressed with your sense of what matters and what doesn't.
Yes, Hartnell's hat trick was worthy of a mention, but 1st star?
Nittymaki's imitation of a brick wall should have rated higher that an honorable mention. His 25 stops in the first period was the game story. Everything that came after was just a cherry on top, including Hartnell's hat trick.
And this coming from a Cap's fan that had to suffer though that train wreck.

A 4 point game does (under normal circumstances, and you're not wearing red and white) get you a 1st star.

Have to agree with Nova.. How Nitty who made some stellar saves on the worlds best and 47 total doesn't get him #1 let alone not even in the top three makes me question how much you really know about hockey.

I am sick and tired hearing about how great and awesome San Jose is. Lets not forget who beat them 6 to0! The Detroit Red Wings have proved once agian they are still the team to beat in the NHL. So the Bruins, Blackhawks, and Pennguins lovers should keep that in mind.

yeah, crosby gets extra attention at given points. But you steadily criticized him punching the no-namer from the Thrashers. How about in Crosby's rookie year when he was continuously hooked, high sticked, and gooned by Hatcher, and many other washed up defensemen who couldnt keep up? So instead of demeaning crosby for one attempt to defend his goal-tender, look to the past =p. Obviously biased against the Penguins
