Puck Daddy - NHL

The NHL's "History Will Be Made" playoff ads focus on names like Messier, Orr, Lemieux, Roy and Bourque. But doesn't that seem like a waste of time and money when clearly the focus should be on real hockey legends, like NBC/TSN "between the benches" reporter Pierre McGuire?

Last week, we reported on the unexpected aftereffects of the NHL's new "History Will Be Made" commercial campaign for the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs: The growing collection of fan-created parodies of the ads, which take the NHL spots' foundation of nostalgic "what if" scenarios and pile on both absurdity and references to hockey infamy.

If you haven't seen them, the NHL's commercials feature a series of reverse slow-motion highlights that ponder how legacies would change if classic moments had never happened in the postseason. Like, for example, what if Mark Messier hadn't led the 1994 New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup?

The "Parody Will Be Made" movement continues to surge, as YouTube on Tuesday morning had over 300 fan-created clips. We've collected about a dozen of them here for your viewing pleasure ... and quite frankly they're getting a little weird. In a good way.

Coming up, videos featuring Joe Thornton(notes) of the San Jose Sharks; Marian Gaborik(notes) of the New York Rangers; Marc-Andre Fleury(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins; Dion Phaneuf(notes) of the Toronto Maple Leafs; former Phoenix Coyotes Coach Wayne Gretzky; and the inevitable tribute to Eric Lindros(notes), unofficially titled "Concussions Will Be Made."

And here ... we ... go.

First off, it's Joe Thornton and Ryan Getzlaf(notes) in the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs, via Emily H.

This Marian Gaborik "HWBM" parody is one of the most inventive we've seen, turning the concept into a "Star Wars" homage:

The Garbinator has a few parodies on YouTube, including a Joe Sakic vs. Doug Gilmour clip. But there's simply no way we're not sharing a "History Will Be Made" Alex Semin fight video:

Steel City Jamz with a Marc-Andre Fleury/Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup ad that, uh, doesn't go where we thought it would.

From Jersey-based filmmaker Steve Chernoski, on an infamous no-goal for the New Jersey Devils in 1991 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Ales Hemsky(notes) and the Edmonton Oilers, pulling the, ahem, "mild" upset in 2006 over the Detroit Red Wings, via Ryan P.

Speaking of the Wings, Fight Night At The Joe has a few Detroit-centric parodies including this instant classic featuring the Intent To Blow rule:

Matt H. with the Dion Phaneuf parody:

A little grammatical fail in the stinger, but an A-plus for the concept of this Wayne Gretzky one:

When you think history, you think Wade Dubielewicz(notes) during his New York Islanders years.

"Wooing Scotsman" with the inevitable Eric Lindros "History Will Be Made" video:

Nelson O. provides a reminder that History Will Be Made if Mike Milbury's involved:

Finally, the tag line on this one could have used a little subtlety, but watching Patrik Stefan's(notes) blown empty netter in reverse slow motion is a poetic train wreck (via Adam V.):

Thanks to everyone who sent in links to clips, and please continue to do so at puckdaddyblog@yahoo.com. Check out The Pensblog for a slew more, many Penguins-oriented. And thanks to everyone that's taken the time to create these clips ... endlessly amazing and creative work from puckheads, as usual.
