This negotiation had the drama of Tina Fey agreeing to play Sarah Palin on "SNL," but here goes: Damien Cox of the Toronto Star writes that "the deal is done" and former Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke is ready to take over as the new president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. From the Star:

With only a few final details to be sorted out, none of which are viewed as deal-breakers, the deal is all but done. The former Anaheim GM was forwarded a "term sheet" by the Leafs over the past 24 hours, which included acceptable clauses on the length of contract and compensation.

Burke's deal will include the rest of this season, then a five-year contract that kicks in next season. He made about $1.4 million managing the Ducks, and is expected to see his salary doubled in Toronto.

David Shoalts of the Globe & Mail has more on this deal, which doesn't seem quite done but is a few minor details from being signed. The same details are reported by Bob McKenzie of TSN. One door is opening, but another is closing.

Since this Brian Burke/Toronto dance started, we're sure there are more than a few puckheads who sensed that Burke has had some backroom, under-the-table communication with the Leafs about their moves since last season. It's probably conspiracy theory rubbish, but a Burke disciple like Ron Wilson coaching the team helped fuel it.

Who knows if that's true. But that talk undermines Cliff Fletcher's tenure as Leafs GM, which has surpassed expectations. Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun penned a very strong column in support of his work behind the scenes:

He salary-dumped Bryan McCabe for Mike Van Ryn and Van Ryn looks like the better player. He bought out Darcy Tucker and Andrew Raycroft. He waived Mark Bell. He hired Ron Wilson to coach (other coaching hirings -- see Tampa and Ottawa -- haven't gone so well.) He brought depth to the Leafs front office.

He moved up in the draft for Luke Schenn and was criticized for sending a second-round pick to the Habs to acquire Mikhail Grabovski, who as of last night had more goals than any Montreal player.

In between, he signed the impressive free-agent Niklas Hagman, may have overpaid for the steady Jeff Finger and probably underpaid for defender Jonas Frogren. And that doesn't count what he could have done had his no-trade players agreed to be dealt.

As Simmons wrote: "He wasn't the senile old man some painted him to be. He wasn't out of touch. He wasn't out of step." He's right, and Fletch proved them wrong.

So which Burke will show up to Toronto, The one that destroyed the Canucks or the lucky bastard that accidentally assembled the Anahiem sucks? Whichever one shows up you can bet he will be having lots of press conferences, lots and lots of press conferences.

Is it me, or is Burke overrated. I don't know...he's done some ok things in the past, but in the history of NHL GMs, he doesn't really stand out. Am I wrong?

seriously. i hope it works out it's so much better for the league when the original 6 teams are playing well and against each other.
sorry to hijack this thread but with that said i wish the schedual would go back to divisional home and homes like in the late 80's early 90's when i first started watching, the blood was boiling by the second game and in the playoffs it didnt take 2-3 games to get the nasty on given the history of previous games. also i'd like to see original 6 teams play a 2 week everyone playes each other once stretch mid season.

He HASN'T done anything special, but there are two important things he will bring to the Toronto Maple Leafs: 1. He will make them a tougher team. Too often Toronto gets bullied around in games with the absence of any real enforcers and you can bet Burke will change that, being a very old-school hockey guy, and 2. Because of his "rock star" status he will get total autonomy over the team, which will keep non-hockey guys like Peddie out of the decision-making process.

Tarrana pundits think this is the end of short, fast, foreign-born players on the leaves.
You need a powerful figure to GM that team because the folks above really like to meddle.

Momma diesel, i'd love to hear your breakdown of how Burke destroyed the Canucks. I mean, all he did was bring Naslund, Bertuzzi and Morrison together as one of the highest-flying lines of the decade, bring back Trevor Linden for a proper goodbye, draft the Sedins, assemble a world-class D around Ohlund and Salo, increase the Canucks' points totals in 4 consecutive years ('99-'03), lead the NHL in goals in the '01-'02 season and finally do something about Vancouver's reputation as a goaltending graveyard (Cloutier and Auld weren't exactly Luongo or Richard Brodeur, but it had been a LONG time since there was a solid option between the pipes).
If you want to pin the team's lack of success in the last few seasons on him, you should take a step back and reconsider that an offensive-minded team totally changed their game plan by hiring a defensive-minded coach. Look no further than Naslund's desire to leave in free agency as proof that it was a jarring transition. Oh wait, that's right, Burke was already gone when that happened. He was also gone before the lockout, and before the clutch and grab rule changes came into effect.
Just wondering what I was missing...

Oh yeah, Burke also drafted Ryan Kesler and Cory Schneider, who will someday replace Luongo as the franchise goalie...

"Tarrana pundits think this is the end of short, fast, foreign-born players on the leaves."
Because God knows that Burke didn't like ANY (Naslund, Sedin, Sedin, Ohlund, Chubarov, Arvedson, Malik, Salo, Ruutu, Slegr, Rucinsky, Lindgren, Hlavac, Skudra, etc.) foreign born players during his time in Vancouver.

Lets hope his lack of appreciation for foreign born players doesn't make him trade away quality players like Nikolai Antropov. It would even more dumb if he gives away Mikhail Grabovski, who is a rising star, and finally I will hate him if he trades away my under-performing favorite player - Alexei Ponikarovsky....

Yeah, well Fletcher doesn't seem to have been pushed one way or another by Peddie, etc.
And to ninja: Give me a frigging break. You can't criticize Fletcher for not giving Wellwood his umpteenth chance. The guy was a bust his entire career in Toronto and was a bust until he got lucky and Vancouver had an injury, so they put him in the lineup because it was simpler than demoting him and calling up someone else because he was still physically IN Vancouver.
You can't blame Fletcher for not knowing that he'd have to jump through so many BS hoops in order to get Wellwood to actually PLAY WELL.

    Burke:
    1) Trade Toskala - he is a UFA after 09-10, meaning this is the year to get something for him. Joseph/Pogge will make sure the Leafs get the top draft pick they desperately need.
    2) Thank Cliff Fletcher.
    3) Talk to Ottawa about Jason Spezza, this is the kind of young talent the Leafs need. Trade Kaberle/Kubina and Antropov if you need to, the Sens would probably love Toskala as well.
    4) Save the cap space, Rick Nash or Marian Gaborik would look good in blue and white in a year and a half. The Leafs should do what the Knicks are doing for Lebron, let these guys know you want them without tampering.
    5) I hope Burke takes it to Strachan. That guy is a rat.
