Perhaps the most stunning thing about what is the biggest hockey news of the morning is that it's not about teams seeking to acquire Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins. It's about GM Ray Shero actively shopping the player some consider to be potentially the best in hockey.

From Bruce Garrioch of Sun Media:

The Penguins are trying to make a blockbuster move before tomorrow night's NHL draft at Scotiabank Place. League sources say Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero offered all-star centre Evgeni Malkin to the Kings for the No. 2 overall pick in the draft and a player, possibly centre Mike Cammalleri.

While many NHL executives refused to believe the Penguins would trade the 21-year-old Malkin because he has one year left on his entry-level contract at a bargain $984,000 (all terms US), the indications are that Shero wants to sign winger Marian Hossa before he becomes an unrestricted free agent -- a deal that could cost Pittsburgh upward of $8 million a year. If the Penguins retained Hossa, signing Malkin next year could be dicey because of salary cap considerations. Kings GM Dean Lombardi told Sun Media yesterday that he's had two solid offers for the No. 2 pick, but after meeting with his ownership group decided to stay the course by building with young players.

Boy, Sidney Crosby certainly wants to keep his Kurri, not matter what it costs.

There is a bit of contradiction here, as Garrioch quotes Lombardi as saying, "To trade away that draft pick, we're going to have to get a lot of value." Malkin for Cammalleri and what could be blue-chip defenseman Drew Doughty or Russian dynamo Nikita Filatov would be at best a steal for the Kings and, at worst, close to equal value once the rookies ripen. If that's not "a lot of value" ... is Lombardi waiting for the Penguins to throw in Marc-Andre Fleury or something? This trade could be the most franchise-defining moment for the Kings since Peter Pocklington made a nation cry. Maybe Lombardi is just worried he's going to end up with Lindros instead of Forsberg.

As for the Penguins, our simple, flawed human minds can't process the absurd notion that the team could somehow be choosing Hossa over Malkin. So let's forget about that angle.

Perhaps Shero is infatuated with flipping his Russian star for the next Scott Niedermayer or the next Pavel Bure, and saving major coin in the process. Maybe he knows something we don't about Malkin.

But on the surface -- and with the very important Garrioch grain of salt -- hearing Evgeni Malkin being shopped weeks after declaring he'd give the Penguins a Crosby discount is absolutely stunning if true.

To think this franchise is at a do-or-die crossroads before Sidney can even legally buy a beer is just baffling and, as a hockey fan, absolutely captivating.

That move would be absolutely stunning. As a Penguins fan, I would be devastated if we traded away potentially the best player in the world not long after he declared that he would take a discount to stay in Pittsburgh. Marian Hossa is a great player and would be an excellent winger for Crosby's line for several years, but he's also eight years older than Malkin and not as explosive offensively.
Why wouldn't Shero consider this move next year under the conditions that Malkin does not decide to take a discount and/or he is no longer playing second fiddle to Crosby? Also, there was a report that came out today from Hossa's agent that says all speculation that the Penguins have made Hossa an offer already is just that, speculation.

I think this would be a horrible, horrible move for the Penguins. Malkin is only 21 years old and is already scoring 40+ goals a season. Yes, Hossa is doing that too - but he's 28 already! Imagine what Malkin will be like at 28.
The Penguins should forget about signing Hossa, it isn't worth the investment. There are plenty of free agents out there with a goal-scoring touch that you could sign for 4-5 mil. It couldn't be that hard to play with Crosby.

I would be absolutely devestated and in utter awe if we were to get rid of Malkin. Sure Hossas good, but comon, did Shero not watch Malkin this season? And for all we know that #2 pick could not even work out, he might sit in the minors for 5 years.
    Malkin's playing Crosby's childish wants.

Back to the land of the thinking, why would the Pens dump Malkin to bring back a pick and a guy who is a UFA after this coming year? I get that it frees up some cap room, but if the Pens move Geno, I'd think they'd want to get a lot more quality AND quantity in return, while getting younger and cheaper.
Think about it. If Filatov is an NHLer in the next year or two, he'll sign an entry level deal that'll pay him in the neighborhood of $4m if he hits all of his incentives. Cammy makes $3.6m this coming year (slightly lower cap hit) and is a UFA after that. So where's the savings, even in the short term?

Like I said, grain of salt. This is nearly Larry Brooksian, except the trade rumor didn't end in a rant about the NHLPA or the Devils playing the trap.

First of all, Malkin's base salary is $984,000 but his bonuses make his salary (and cap hit) in excess of $3.8 million dollars.
He's due a huge raise even off that figure, but it's not as if he's going to increase from less than a million to $8, $9, $10 million.
Cammaleri has one year left and he's set to be a UFA that could command almost as much money as Malkin will.
In conclusion, Garroich is an idiot.

Pretending for a moment this rumor has validity, perhaps Malkin's public claims and his agents private demands are different. Perhaps the Penguins get an even better return than reported. As far as the rookie salary goes, Jack Johnson's making 0.850 this year. Do you think that salary's jumping to $4 million per year in his UFA deal? Maybe, maybe not.

An eye-opener, 4 sure... Definitely, the headline does make hockey fans click on the link... Usually, & about 100% of the time, the link leads 2 fluff... Stuff that as each sentence & paragraph goes by, becomes more of the "hmmm" stuff...
No matter what, this so-called latest is prolly another ratings getter for the page count, 2 up Yahoo's advertising costs... There's no jail 4 those who've had visions, & then typed their falsities...
Even if the Pen's were gonna' swap a Malkin, wouldn't they B seeking a no.# 1, instedda' a no.# 2 (???)... Come on, man... If Cammaleri is the best that the prophet can muster, then why not Tampa's Vinnie & the no.# 1 (???)... Spin the Malkin-Prospal-Melrose stuff... It'd B just as hot as the helium neccessary 2 float a balloon over a desert like Vegas... Even the odds-makers out there would be busier than our eyes, here @ Yahoo... Whatever was once fresh, fluffy, appealing, & smelling good, just ain't gonna resemble anything less than a public restroom on a major interstate during a hot summer driving time... This internet highway, this web cafe, is no place 2 B spending wasted soap-opera predictions. Period.

Garrioch also claimed that the Capitals were not willing to make a commitment to Ovechkin and it was stalling negotiations.

Grain taken and no ribbing in your direction meant.
Just poking fun at the "source." Usually when a Sun Media publication cites "sources," that could mean anyone from a crazy hobo passing out poorly xeroxed communist leaflets to the "girl on page three" herself.
Then again, Sun sources have been whispering that maybe Shero is looking to trade Ryan Whitney for the Page Three Girl and a crate of maple syrup. *grin*

    @ Wysh:
Point being, as I alluded to and Hooks noted more explicitly, one year from now, assuming that the #2 pick is playing in the NHL, counting his incentives and Cammy's free agent deal, it's going to be very close to (if not more than) the total Geno makes.
(And Johnson's making $850k base this year, but his cap hit - if he hits his incentives - will be $2.15M)

So far all the rumors I've heard the past few days regarding Hossa and Malone were contradicted by either the players themselves and/or their agents. So, I'll take this story with a grain of salt. From what I heard all year with the local media and their "inside sources" the Pens are going to keep no matter what: Crosby, Malkin, Fleury and Staal. That's the nucleus the intend to keep for as long as they can.

assuming for a minute that it is true...
regardless of what potential they might have with the draft, malkin's a proven winner & it'd be a retarded trade. he was sick as a dog in the finals this year, and i'm willing to give him a pass. hossa used to suck in the playoffs too, but he's proven that can change. i'm thrilled to get the hoss (though a 7-year contract might be a bit much!), but malkin is definitely 2nd only to crosby in importance, and not even by that much! the pens have plenty of youth, what they need is a little more gritty maturity, like sykora & roberts provide. getting rid of malkin for some younger kids is just plain dumb- he & crosby have the potential to put up some 310-point seasons like lemieux & jagr did in '96.

This is the tabloid Canadian hockey media needing a story to talk about before the draft and making one up themselves. We've seen this song and dance hundreds of times from the Ottawa Sun and this is no different.
