According to Russian newspaper Sport Express, Washington Capitals forward Sergei Fedorov(notes) will sign with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League this week, ending his 18-year career in the National Hockey League.

A year after Jaromir Jagr(notes) left for greener pastures, it looks as if the NHL will lose another aging future Hall of Famer and legendary import to the KHL. The Capitals soon might have two open spots at forward as his teammate, Viktor Kozlov(notes) could be joining Fedorov as was reported recently.

The Sport Express report states that a two-year deal worth $3.8 million per season is waiting to be signed by the 39-year old Fedorov, who would be joining his brother, Fedor, with recently signed with Metallurg.

After defecting from Russia during the Goodwill Games in 1990, Fedorov tallied 483 goals, most by a Russian-born NHL'er, and 1179 points in 1248 career games. A holder of three Stanley Cup rings, all with Detroit, Fedorov was also the recipient of the 1994 Hart and Pearson trophies after a 56 goal, 120-point season with the Red Wings. Add silver and bronze medals from the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics respectively, as well as three gold medals from the World Championships and you've got yourself a bona fide first-ballot Hockey Hall of Famer.

Not factored in the Hall of Famer discussion: him bagging Anna Kournikova.

Contract controversies in during his tenure in Detroit labeled him as yet another greedy athlete. There was the first dispute that ended with the Red Wings matching an offer-sheet by the Carolina Hurricanes in 1998, then another stalemate in 2003 that led to Fedorov signing with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2003. He would later be dealt to Columbus before ending up in Washington at last season's trade deadline. With the Capitals, Fedorov mentored fellow Russian, Alex Ovechkin, who idolized him as a child and became one of the team's most reliable depth players.

Like Jagr before, Fedorov's best days were behind him and he was not going to be able to negotiate another contract worth $4 million/year in the NHL with him turning 40 later this year. He now gets to finish his hockey career at home and with one big, final contract.

If he hadn't held out in 97-98, he'd be the first Russian-born player to score 500 goals in the NHL. We'll miss your speed, smooth skating and sweet flow Feds. Best of luck.

yeah, Fedor has tried to make the NHL a couple of times, including this past pre-season with the New Jersey Devils, but he's never been able to stick. A fairly skilled guy, but a total head case.

Anyone who's had to play a friend in NHL '09 with KHL teams because they're so good (cough, cough *me*) knows that Fedor Fedorov is pretty good.
Back to the main point Sergei will be missed by me at least. He was never really on a team when I was rooting for them but he, like Pavel Bure, always inspired an awe in the smoothness and ease at which they performed at such high speeds. I thought Sergei could still play in the NHL if he wanted to, as even in the playoffs he ended up getting some key pts, but it might be nice for him to have the shorter KHL season at this point.

It is a shame he played for Detroit for so long and the Caps at the end of his run in the NHL, since I dislike those teams. However I am a fan, since he's another guy I watched growing up and who is now walking off into the sunset. Hope it's worth it in the KHL.

Fedorov brothers reunited? Does this mean we get more great music like we did during the lockout? (Anyone else remember that?)

Let me get this straight "word", you're basing your assessment of his talent based on the fact that your friend used him against you on the NHL 09' game? WOW. (and that isn't short for world of warcraft either) I knew there were some geeks on here but seriously?
In EA's NHL95', (The last game I played before discovering real live women) Mogilny was like the best player there and we all know how well that worked out for him.

He was a great player, that's for sure. I got to see a game at the Joe against the Capitals when I was home for Christmas in 1996. He had scored four goals, the Caps had scored four goals, and it went into overtime. Guess who scored?

There is a solution to stopping this terrible trend before it becomes a problem for the NHL.... He and Jagr should never grace the Hall of Fame. Period. Shame on those two for turning their backs on the league (and two great nations) that made them who they are/were. As far as I'm concerned, their legacies as great players in the NHL are forever tarnished.

The only Russian Mafia left is probably in NYC, Jersey, Florida and maybe Spain. Sure hard to find them in Russia. Well, maybe in the Government - but they are no different from US politicians. They don't need anything from Fedorov - that's for sure. 3.8 mil with 13% tax. His decision is obvious. Magnitogorsk is no paradise though, we would be better of in Moscow.
