Puck Daddy - NHL

At 14-3-4 and with the ability to ice an all-star team on any given hockey night, the Detroit Red Wings probably aren't close to earning your sympathy. That whole "defending Stanley Cup champions" thing doesn't help, either.

But they are in a bit of a financial pickle come next summer, with five key players heading to free agency. Dave Dye of The Detroit News pestered GM Ken Holland about this, and discovered that the Wings know their limitations:

The unstable economy is making long-range plans more complicated in the NHL's salary-cap system. The Red Wings are greatly affected by this because they've got four players -- Henrik Zetterberg, Marian Hossa, Johan Franzen and Mikael Samuelsson -- eligible to be unrestricted free agents next summer and another, Jiri Hudler, who can be a restricted free agent.

General manager Ken Holland thinks he can, realistically, sign only two of the top three (Zetterberg, Hossa, Franzen) because of cap limitations. "It's a guessing game from both sides (club and player)," Holland said. "You can do a deal and find out three years from now the cap has taken a big hike or you can find out three years from now the cap's taken a big decrease."

Here's how Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period sees things shaking out:

There isn't enough money to go around anymore, so that means one or two guys have to go. Zetterberg will get his contract done, as will Hudler. The Red Wings have to decide which direction they'd like to take. Do they try to sign Hossa to a long-term deal? If so, will he accept the same dollar figures on a long-term contract? Or, do the Wings use that cash to keep Franzen, and possible Samuelsson? It's a very tough decision. Many may argue that you sign the best player available, and that's Hossa. But, if Hossa demands $8M-$9M per year, the Wings might not even be able to match that because of a team-imposed player cap, where a salary cannot be higher than that of captain Nicklas Lidstrom's. Does Lidstrom care that much? Who knows. I'm just glad I'm not in Ken Holland's shoes right now.

Zetterberg will obviously stay in Detroit -- he's priority No. 1, and contract talks were heating up this month. If the Wings are willing to live with his fragility, Franzen is a must-sign, especially with Tomas Holmstrom headed for his 36th birthday. Mikael Samuelsson ... tough call, and completely contingent on the money rather than the years.

Hossa's the X-Factor. The one-year deal would seem to signify his re-entering the free-agent pool next summer. The Wings have been adamant about inking him to a long-term deal. Is he worth it? Would he stay? If not, would Edmonton come calling again? Do we even dare mention Pittsburgh as a suitor?

Nothing like hot stove the day after Thanksgiving ...

Gotta let Hossa go...the other players they would lose are much more valuable.
They have to start letting some of the older fellas (like Holmstrom etc) go. Remember what the Candiens used to do when they traded their aging stars for high draft picks and prospects while they still had value? Thats what the Wings gotta do

I think there was a very good reason Hossa was only given a 1 year contact. I don't believe either Detroit or Hossa really thought he would be back for a second year but they could fit him in under the salary cap for this season and when you can add a player of his talent to a team that already has what it takes to win a cup it was really a no brain decision for both sides. Hossa gets a run at the cup and the Wings have that much better chance of repeating. After this season Hossa can leave and they are left with essentialy what they had last year...take him out of the equation and I'm sure Holland can make the money go round to keep his core intact. Where Hossa end up anybody will be intersting though. (Personally I'm hoping Hossa doesn't go to Edmonton.) I

Listen everyone knows zetterberg will get his deal done, and I'm sure most of my fellow wings fans knew this Hossa thing is a one year shot. That being said if we can keep Franzen, Hudler with what's left fine, reality is we need to make some room for some of the kids coming up to play, you know since we have guys playing for the griffins that a lot of teams would like to have.

If I was Ken Holland, I would try some wild negotiating with the agents - offer the agents a big cut of cash, while signing the players under the cap with some sort of "dynasty" plan...
All these guys then could make a tonne of cash as multi-Stanley Cup champions in endorsements, etc.
Remember Glenn Anderson? The only reason we do is he was part of a dynasty - if he played anywhere else, he would have no respect...

Ryan, you usually can't get around the salary cap like that. If you could, it wouldn't be much of a salary cap, and other teams would have already done it.
I've been amazed at how well Hossa has played this year. He's frequently the most active player on the ice on both ends. If he's willing to take about what he's making now, I would rather have him than Franzen and Samuelson. If he's going to need 9m a year, though, it goes the other way. I have to imagine Holland feels pretty much the same way.

Hossa is the best player in the league right now. No way the Wings let him escape! Holland will figure out a way to keep the top 3 and Hudler too probably. I see Samuelsson, Maltby, and Cheli gone next year.

It's almost a no win situation with Hossa. If the Wings win the Cup, he'll be asking more than they're willing to pay. If they don't win the Cup, he'll want to sign with the team that did win the Cup.
The smart move would be to lock up Zetterberg, Franzen, and Hudler. Lowball Samuelson with a take it or leave it offer. Let Hossa walk.

The best player available is Franzen!! Hoss is great, but Franzen is ridiculous. Franzen was th only bright spot last game against Montreal. The Mule undressed the Habs Dman and Carey Price for the third period goal. Hossa needs a star around to be good, otherwise Hossa is a marginal star, his points totals are deceiving, because he plays on a line with the best forward in hockey Datsyuk.

I see it as the Wings couldn't pull resigning everyone EXCEPT that they are signing foreign players. Lets say you are playing Russia on a team that has 5 Canada/US players. You have played with them before, it's fun to have a variety of guys from your culture in a foreign land, these guys have became your family, and their families hang out with yours. Would you take a million more to play on another team with maybe one Canada/US player and feel alone? What about your kids? I believe DET's Swedes will take the hometown discount, just like in the 90's the management convinced all the Russians to stay together.
Hossa should be the last to get an offer. DET won the cup w/o Hossa he isn't a core piece. They should ask him do you like winning, because LA has the cap space if you don't.

If the Red Wings don't start bouncing some of their older players whose production is declining and stop signing high-priced free agents in favour of the talented young NHL-ready prospects they already have wasting away in the minors they are going to have some major problems on their hands. Niklas Lidstrom is in his late thirties and Brian Rifalski isn't that far behind, so when they lost Kyle Quincey on waivers at the beginning of the season they arguably gave up one of their most talented prospective blueliners (one who could have helped shoulder the defensive burden when Lidstrom decides he's done) because they funnelled what little cap space that remains to them into signing Marian Hossa, a shiny new spare part they obviously wanted a whole lot more than they really needed. You can bet that if the Kings can hang on to Quincey, they'll use him and Drew Doughty as the cornerstone of their defensive corps, two players they can forge a team around over the next few seasons that could eventually grow into a playoff contender for years to come. Ken Holland is an amazing general manager with a great eye for good young talent, but it won't mean jack if he drafts the next Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr or Martin Brodeur if he just winds up losing them on the waiver wires, especially if the teams he is handing them to, practically gift-wrapped, are teams in his own conference that will be competing with the Red Wings for playoff positions. This hasn't become a major problem for the Red Wings yet, but it will if Holland continues to mortgage the team's future because Hossa and other high-priced free agents look pretty playing on lines next to Datsyuk and Zetterburg. You can bet on it.

I wonder if Wings' fans will detest Hossa if he signs for less than market value with whoever beats the Wings in the SCF this season? ;)

As for Hossa, he never should have said he left Pittsburgh because he felt he had a better chance of winning a Cup in Detroit because now if the Red Wings don't pull off a repeat, he'll look like an idiot and a tool, especially if the Penguins make another deep post-season run. If Detroit doesn't win, I doubt it is likely he will stick around, even if the Wings can clear out enough cap space to keep him. It's been mentioned before that he's a pretty mercenary guy, and if this is true and he can't get himself a championship, I am sure he'll settle for the next best thing: money. Which makes a reunion with the Penguins extremely doubtful, especially if Ray Shero manages to lock up Jordan Staal before the season is out. Shero also has players that are actually on his time coming up for free agency that I am sure he is more focused on trying to keep in his line up than bringing back players who would prefer to be elsewhere. At thirty-two, Petr Sykora is not a sniper on the calibre of a Hossa, and he wil probably never have another thiry-four goal season like he did in his first year with Anaheim, but he can still put up some pretty decent numbers and Evgeni Malkin likes having him on his wing, so I don't see Shero letting Sykora go anywhere. Miroslav Satan is also making a strong case for an extension of the one year contract he signed over the summer with nine goals on the season so far, more than anyone aside from Malkin and Crosby. He may be a streaky scorer, but he does score, and the Penguins need that secondary scoring if they want to continue to do well. Kris Letang also comes up for restricted free agency at the end of the next season, and I'm sure the Penguins will do whatever they can to keep him in the fold. So if Hossa starts looking for a new place to hang his hat at the end of this season, he probably won't find it in Pittsburgh.

As much as everyone may think that Detroit or Pittsburgh is a shythole, we all are overlooking the obvious - Hossa is going to sign with the Islanders in the off season and in 2009-2010 will be playing with his Wang, Charles Wang, all season long...

If the Wings repeat or even make a good run, I think he'll be able to negotiate Hossa down to something more reasonable. Zetterberg will definitely get his money, no doubt. Franzen and Hudler are solid role guys who have a ton of upside. Samuelsson probably gets the short end here.
Besides, worst comes to worst, Holland can just go to Sweden for two weeks and come back with some meatball no one's heard of and turn him into a 60 point guy.

i don't see any way that detroit can keep hossa, but i'm ok with that. sign zetterberg, franzen and hudler, let hossa, mccarty and chelly go, trade lebda if you can, then bring up helm, leino and ericsson. I'm ok with that.

Hossa traded to Pittsburgh for WB Penguins team bus (It's a nice one)in Feb. for a playoff run. Pens defense gets healthy and the March of the Penguins meets Happy Feet playoff saga continues. Hossa not offered contract regardless of outcome. Red Wings draft entire Sudbury Wolves roster for '09 run to playoffs, $36 million under cap, playing to average home attendance of 485. Holland, you genius.

The ONLY way Detroit keeps Hossa, Zetterberg and Franznen is to trade Rafalski...... and he has a no trade clause.... which can be waived though for the right price..... but he also loves playing in Detroit. They would have to dump at least 6 million in salary and make a few other changes. Trading Filppula, Sammy, Hudler, Lilja, Draper, and even Maltby and then bringing up their replacements will NOT do it.... and that's even if Hossa and Z sign for the "Lidstrom cap" and Franzen signs for 4 mil...play with the numbers and you will see for yourself. So IMHO one of the top guys is gone.
