MONTREAL -- Like dozens of other prospects, Landon Ferraro sat in the seats of Bell Centre and waited to hear his name called during Friday night's first round.

As the Pittsburgh Penguins made the 30th pick and Ferraro's name was left unsaid, the son of former NHL standout Ray Ferraro saw a grueling night end with his fate as a professional undetermined until Saturday morning.

"It's something I wouldn't wish on anyone," said Ferraro, a center with Red Deer of the WHL.

"Coming in, you're expecting to go, and then I sat there for almost five hours. You're stressing out. As much as you're trying to look calm in case a TV camera pops on you, I was sweating and I was nervous," he said.

"Today, I'm as happy as can be."

Ferraro was taken with the 32nd pick in the draft by the Detroit Red Wings, becoming one of several "legacies" selected on Saturday's Rounds 2-7.

They included defenseman Philip Samuelsson, son of Ulf, was taken at No. 61; Raymond Bourque's son, Ryan, was selected by the New York Rangers at No. 80 (we have video of his media scrum after the jump); Tyson Barrie, son of Tampa Bay Lightning co-owner and former pro Len Barrie, went at No. 64 to the Colorado Avalanche; and Marcus Foligno, son of former Sabres Mike Foligno, at No. 104 to the Buffalo Sabres. That's after Carter Ashton (son of Brent Ashton) and Tim Erixon (son of Jan) went in the first round.

It's a tense but ultimately exhilarating process for these veteran players. Even a tough guy like Ulf Samuelsson was on pins and needles as his son waited for the call.

"I was starting to get [nervous]," said Samuelsson, currently an assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes

He said Friday night's first round wasn't too stressful, because he knew that Phillip would likely be chosen in the later rounds on Saturday. "Yesterday, we just kind of enjoyed it. Watched the other families sweat a little bit," he said.

One of those families was the Ferraro's, and Samuelsson sympathized with father Ray later on Friday night.

"I had a long talk with him last night," said Samuelsson. "He didn't sleep well. It's hard."

But on Saturday, Ferraro didn't have to wait long to see his son taken by the Red Wings.

"I don't even know how it feels. It's so surreal right now," said Landon Ferraro, who went from using Detroit in video games against his brothers during the Stanley Cup Finals to being the team's first pick in the draft.

"I've put on this jersey before. But it's never had an NHL logo and it's never come from the actual team. It's a pretty weird feeling," he said.

When asked what the Winged Wheel signified for him, Ferraro took a long look at his fresh new sweater.

"I think of my dad's last game," he said. "He was in St. Louis when Detroit won in '02. They beat'em in Game 5 in Detroit, and it was the only time I've been to Joe Louis Arena."

Ryan Bourque spent more time in an arena in Boston than in an arena in New York growing up, and the 18-year-old center said the thought of the Boston Bruins selecting him at No. 86 crossed his mind before the Rangers snagged him at No. 80.

Here is Ray Bourque's son, talking about the adventure of the draft, how his brother Chris's experience influenced him and becoming a New York Ranger.

Ferraro said that, in the end, the advice of father who used to play in the NHL isn't

"It's the same as everyone's parents give: Just try to enjoy it."

Landon Ferraro ; fastest skater at the prospects game. Raw skills but needs to round out his game. Returns to Red Deer for a year, possibly plays for Canada at the World Juniors then plays a year or two in the AHL and becomes the next Dan Cleary. Helm is already in place to become the next Draper. Business as usual in Detroit. As a Canucks and Flyers fan I hate the Wings. As a hockey fan, nothing but admiration. Well oiled machine.

I'm surprised Landon lasted as long as he did. I guess there are more "ready" players in the draft and the Wings don't need that right now since they have that in their farm.

David : Agreed, I was comparing Helm to an in-his-prime Draper (which was pretty good i.e. Gold w/Team Canada at the 2004 World Cup good). Helm is awesome.
rjkgoalie : Kassian could be the next Lucic. Tyler Myers might be the best 6'6"+ teenage d-man in the NHL next year (not Hedman). The Sabres will be very competitive IMO. Clarke MacArthur is getting better too. A healthy Miller and Vanek last year and they would have been in the playoffs ahead of the Habs I think.

I'm sorry but ferraros never pan out. Ray ferraro never carried a team...he was always playing with teammates better than him and reaped the benefits. I don't know about his son but...if speed is any indication he's not working on becoming a complete player.
PS...when the hell did the NHL become Yale? What's the deal with the penguins drafting the sons of their former players? But better question...how did tampa NOT select the son of their co-owner? That's just mean.

Your blog hurts my brain, yet I still read it for some reason--probably because interesting hockey coverage is sorely lacking on most of Earth outside of Canada. Have you ever heard of editing? Case in point:
""...who went from using Detroit in video games against this brothers during the Stanley Cup Finals..."
"...and the 18-year-old center said the thought of the Boston Bruins selected him at No. 86 crossed his mind..."
And how about telling us what team Samuelsson's kid went to (luckily I was an Ulf fan, so I recognized his ugly mug in the picture and figured it out)?
    Come on, clean it up.

Russ Ray Ferraro 400 goals 900 points if you call that not panning out you are insane, you don't put up numbers like that without having skills.

I think NOT drafting your kid to play for Tampa is one of the kindest things a father can do for their son.

I wasn't sure about Ferraro, but he got drafted by the Red Wings past the first round, so I'm thinking he'll now be a future MVP.

Ulf was so nervous while waiting for his kid's name to be called that he wandered by the Bruins' draft table and kneed Cam Neely.
