Puck Daddy - NHL

(NOTE: Don't forget about Puck Daddy's 2009 Free Agent Frenzy Chatter Box)

There are two ways to look at the New York Rangers' decision to sign Marian Gaborik(notes) this evening in one of the most significant moves of the Free Agent Frenzy.

1. That the Rangers have, in the last 24 hours, turned Scott Gomez(notes) and his seemingly untradeable contract into Marian Gaborik, Christopher Higgins(notes) and Ryan McDonagh. In Gaborik, they have a player whose flashes of creativity under the conservative weight of Jacques Lemaire hockey have been tantalizing; one that is two seasons removed from 42 goals and 83 points. They've signed the most purely talented winger the franchise has seen since Jaromir Jagr(notes).

2. Or, that the Rangers have committed $7.5 million annually against the cap for the next five years to a player whose fragility and nagging injuries have become synonymous with his talent. They've invested in a stock that's either boom or bust.

Right now, we're all goofing on the Rangers for breaking the bank and wondering what John Tortorella's profanity-filled reaction will be when Gaborik's misses his 10th straight game with a wonky groin. Which is ignoring the genius of this move by Sather.

For all the taunting of Gaborik's stability, he's only played less than 65 games in a season twice.

Granted, they're sandwiched around that 42-goal effort; but if he can, at a minimum, give the Rangers 65 games of great offensive hockey and then be healthy for the playoffs ... well, one assumes they'll be good enough to make the postseason cut. Especially if his numbers thrive in a new system, with new talent around him.

The Sedins weren't coming to New York. Dany Heatley(notes) would have been the safer choice, but he wasn't an option; especially if Brandon Dubinsky(notes) had to go the other way. But Gaborik is a better choice than Havlat or Kovalev or any other winger. This is how Sather and Tortorella wanted to build the team -- get a star on the wing rather than a waste of money in the middle. Gaborik was, outside of Hossa, the best option on the open market.

Forget the money -- it's the Rangers. This is what they're supposed to do, and there's always long-term injured reserve for cap relief if things go badly. Besides, they've basically cleared the salaries of Gomez and Markus Naslund(notes) and turned them into Gaborik, with money left over. There's no quibbling with that tradeoff.

The gamble is the years, not only because of Gaborik's health but because any multi-year, high-dollar deal in New York City can sour in the span of a few negative tabloid newspaper covers and scathing callers on WFAN. Ask Scotty Gomez about that.

That's the gamble. Sather's taken it. And one gets the sense Gaborik has waiting his entire career to make it pay off.

A few other signings ...

• The Columbus Blue Jackets had a very good day, getting Samuel Pahlsson(notes) as their checking center for $7.95 million over three years and Mathieu Garon(notes) for $2.4 million over two years. The BeeJays used to have zippy up the middle; now, their centers might go four-deep next year for the first time in franchise history.

• Quote of the Night from Down Goes Brown after Chris Neil(notes) inked a new deal with the Ottawa Senators: "$8M for Neil sounds about right. I'm assuming it's a 20-year deal?" Ha! Four years, $8 million for the pest. Neil, not the other pest that's making $1.3 million next season.

End of an era in New Jersey: The great checking duo of Madden and Pandolfo has been broken up, as John Madden(notes) signs a one-year, $2.75 million deal with the Chicago Blackhawks. That's a fantastic deal for the Hawks; he fits their style perfectly, he's still got something in the tank and he's gone before the Hossa-created cap hell of next summer.

• Finally, the New Jersey Devils lose Brian Gionta(notes) to a 5-year, $25 million contract with the Montreal Canadiens, who will presumably reunite him with Scott Gomez. It's only a $1 million raise on his cap hit; wonder if the years were the issue for the Devils and other suitors. Bob Gainey appears to be creating a team that's quick, offensive and isn't tall enough to ride most roller coasters.

Goodbye Gaborik. You and your groin won't be missed in Minnesota. Rangers paid way too much.

That sucks, but it wasn't unexpected. Gionta moves on to Montreal for $5 million per while Madden goes to Chicago for a good shot at the Cup next year if Chicago lives up to their hype and potential. It wouldn't hurt so bad if we had players replacing the ones that are leaving the Devs. Either Lou's got something up his sleeve or we're in for the youth movement next year.

I dunno about this one. The guy is one of the most talented players in the league but he's always hurt. He has also been a bad playoff performe too. I think this will bite them in the ass. I rather have traded for Heatley(who is far more durable) I would have been signed him to a short term contract but this contract could end up being almost as bad as Drury's and Gomez's contracts.

Bet the Devs sign Malhotra to take Madden's spot. Gainey has lost his mind 5 years for Gionta?!

Good riddance to Madden. Thanks for your help in '00 and '03 but you really needed to go.
As far as Gionta, it is the money. He is a 20 goal scorer you had one great year because of the post-lockout rules. 5 million is too much. Plus the Devils already had Rolston on the team to take his space.

I rather have Heatley. Maybe they trade Dubinsky for Heatley. I like Brandon but lets face it. Is he ever going to be a 80 pt guy. The Rangers are full of 40pt role players. We need some goal scoring.

It appears that Gainey knew what he was doing when he signed Gomez ($7.357M cap hit). By adding Gianta ($5M cap hit), he has created a combo ($12.357M cap hit) that is comparable to the Sedin combo ($12.2 cap hit). To me this combo is better. Hail to the chief.

I agree with your analysis of Gaborik Whysh, but the price is too high and the contract too long for someone with his injury history. Can Gaborik carry the Rangers through the playoffs? Where do the goals come from when he's out? Need wiggle room to get another finisher.

    @ i4ni, you nailed it.
Any ideas on whether the Devils could make a big trade? Zubus could go and Pandolfo is useless without Madden. Maybe something for Thornton (I wish), or more realistically, Marleau. Koivu is still out there. One of those two could make a decent #2 center.

Do Sather and Gainey share the same small, senile brain? They both sure do love to overpay players.

Hey Greg, what the hell makes you think...
    A. People will actually call WFAN to talk about the Rangers, you should know that its Yankees, Mets, Jets and Giants all the time
    B. The newspapers will waste any backpage ink on Hockey? You know that when Football and Baseball are over for that small window, the Knicks take over and the Rangers dont make the back page when they make the playoffs, the Hockey media is not a big deal in NY

I'm still hoping for Koivu and now that Montreal has spent over $80 million on what - 6 players? - I don't see Koivu going back to Montreal unless he accepts a $3-4 million/year salary. Zubrus isn't bad, but he didn't fit with the personnel we had. He'd be good on the 3rd line with his puck control with Clarkson and maybe Bergfors, but right now we're in desperate need of a #2 center (Koivu, Morrison) and offensive or two-way defensemen (Morris, Bergeron, Beauchemin). Pandolfo might be getting the same treatment Brylin got and it's a shame because he is a durable player and plays some good D, but splitting up Madden and Pando is like splitting up the Sedin's - they're better together moreso than they are apart. Marleau and Thornton are too rich for Lou, I'm sure SJ would be looking at Zajac/Parise going the other way and some high picks.

I'm actually pretty please to get GIonta on the Habs. However, looking at the size of the players signed but the Habs so far, I hope that Lucic has the flu for every game against MTL and that they never play Philly!

@FreeCandy, not "crappy", I'd say "new". Lots of our long-time players moved on for a better paycheck and we do actually have talent in the farm that is NHL-ready (Halischuk, Corrente, Bergfors) and while I'd rather we risk the money of Koivu/Morris/Bergeron/Morrison/Beauchemin, think about this - nobody gave Brian Rafalski a shot or a prayer in the NHL until NJ did. Nobody knew how John Madden would pan out. Either way it's a risk, but if you've seen the Devils these past 15 years or so, you should know to never count them out.

Man I knew sather was gonna pull a head scratcher with that money. It was just to enticing to spend like a child at the toy store. Not saying that Gaborick isn't really potentially awesome but usually when it quacks, well you know the saying.

@RandomClown, +1 on the WFAN tip. It's 24/7 baseball and football on that station. I listen frequently.
I still hold true that the ONLY way I'd have been happy with Gaborik as a Ranger was less years and less money with games-played incentives. I just hope there's enough headroom left to get another piece.

As Steve Martin once said: "Let's get small!"
Of course, Gainey DID sign Hal Gill. If only he *Played* 6-1/2 feet tall.
What is Lou Lamariello thinking? Who's going to coach what's left?
