Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished.

Preview: Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes, 9 p.m. EST. Second place in the Pacific Division is up for grabs between two of the League's most surprising teams. The Kings' special teams have been aces in two previous meetings (1-1) against the Yotes. Of course, none of that matters now that the NHL owns Phoenix and will fix all its games and stuff.

Preview: Edmonton Oilers at New York Islanders, 7 p.m. EST. If this were 1983, we'd watch this instead of watching the World Series. Aw, who are we kidding: We're still watching this instead of watching the World Series. The Isles are 4-1-2 in their last seven. Wonder if the Tambellini's have a friendly father/son wager.

Evening Reading

• Elliotte Friedman offers more analysis on that brutal hit on Ben Fanelli. [CBC Sports, and the hit is here.]

From the Washington Capitals: "Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin(notes) suffered an upper-body strain in Sunday evening's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and his status is week-to-week, the team determined Monday. ... He was examined and treated by the team's medical staff and underwent an MRI exam on Monday. The two-time reigning most valuable player will travel with the Capitals this week to continue to receive medical treatment." Week-to-week is a very strange term. Is that a gentleman's way of saying "month"?

Wolverine Lloyd Christmas Jonathan Toews(notes) is still out with a concussion. [Sun Times]

• The Chicago Blackhawks' TV ratings are bizonkers. [NHL]

• Mirtle checks in on the U.S. Olympic team's prospects. Has Craig Anderson(notes) moved ahead of Jon Quick(notes) on the goalie depth chart? [From The Rink]

• The NHL gives ye olde official statement on buying the Phoenix Coyotes. [NHL]

• Defenseman Shea Weber(notes) could miss two weeks with a foot injury for the Nashville Predators. [Preds]

David Booth(notes) of the Florida Panthers is also making slow progress back to the rink after that Mike Richards(notes) hit. [Sun Sentinel]

From the NHL: "Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski(notes) has been suspended for two games, without pay, for delivering a forearm blow to the head of Phoenix Coyotes forward Shane Doan(notes) in NHL game #189, October 31, the National Hockey League announced today. The incident occurred at 7:12 of the first period. No penalty was assessed on the play. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Wisniewski will forfeit $28,497.40.  The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund." The play in question ... Tito Santana would be proud:

Puck Buddy Comment of the Day: Max Powers isn't exactly optimistic about Alex Ovechkin's career:

"He's the Dan Marino of hockey. Lotsa numbers, just not the one that counts. I could see his whole career going that way, lol."

Hey, if it means Ovie on the CBS NFL studio show, we'll take it.

Bold Prediction: Tony Gonzalez gets the five points we need to win the week in fantasy football.

oh, and phillies both stave off elimination and reject the yankees cash proposal for the world series. you'd think the yankees already paid enough for their championship.

matt - r u retarded?? he doesn't deserve a suspension for deliberately knocking out a star player? all i can hope is for that to happen to you and for everyone watching laughing at you and saying "whelp, it was clean." ;)
anyway, add ov and weber to the list of players not playing. the AHL is going to have a shortage of players. EVERYONE is hurt and there's NO scoring. nice job NHLPA! you've really got an attractive product there

Wiz has been taking a page out of Justin Bradshaw Layfield's playbook. CLOTHSLINE FROM HELL!
I can just hear Farooq saying "Oh hell no!" As his music hits and he runs into the ring to help his former APA partner, Wisniewski.

God. I tried to watch the Islanders-Oilers game tonight after the WS ended, and all I have to say is this: Clips of the `84 Air Canada Cup are pathetically of higher quality than what I saw on TV tonight. Way to go Bettman.

@ cc : Are you talking about the Midget championships in Canada (sponsored by Air Canada) or the "Canada Cup" (which later became the World Cup of Hockey)? If it's the latter, I don't think "Air" had anything to do with it. It was Alan Eagleson's creation. Do you know he wouldn't even allow the Russians to take the trophy back to Russia when they won the Canada Cup in 1981 (the only time they won it). Some Canadian Hockey fans, who were rightfully embarrased by Eagleson's behaviour, started a fund to finance a replica to be minted. It was (at a cost of 20k I think) and the Russians got their trophy. Man, Eagleson was a scumbag...
Anyway, more to your point, I have the 1987 Canada Cup on tape (VHS). I taped it back in the day as a teenager on my parents VCR. It's awesome! The best of three final was 6-5 Russia (OT), 6-5 Canada (2 OT), 6-5 Canada (Gretzky to Lemieux for the winner). Unbelievable. It was the "Paul Henderson" moment for people who were not born in 1972 (or too young to remember).

Acmeyakko you sound like you've spent too much time watching a bitter unsuccessful Shane Doan. The poor mans Teemu Selanne should keep his head up rather than hiding behind Bettman.

Yeah, because Bettman is the guy who hands out suspensions, and players call him personally to get their way. It has nothing to do with elbowing somebody in the face.

Imagine that no big articles and no big outrage over what was the dirtiest of all the recent big hits. I am not crying conspiracy but the outcome speaks for itself, just look at the friggin' evidence. Mike Richards who was incorrectly penalized and subsequently removed from a game on what was ultimately not a dirty nor an illegal check. Then there were three columns over the course of two days where people speculated and criticized a hard nosed stand up star in this league based solely on the mythical lure of a franchise and its fan base. And last night the league suspended what they just could not ignore as a dirty elbow shot to the head. Where is the outrage people Wisniewski is a repeat offender of head shots and suspensions. The evidence speaks for itself!

Post #16: Bettman is the one who suspended Avery last year for his oh-so-profane use of the phrase sloppy seconds. He does have the power to suspend anyone he wants.

@steven h and the rest of you, watch the video, he clearly raises and leads with the elbow directly at Doan's head. Not shoulder, not upper arm, ELBOW. Is there really any question? And for all of you who incorrectly noted that Richards' was a repeat offender for head shots and suspensions check the record this guy has already been suspended for a flagrant head shot.

Bettmans is a douche nozzle, W's hit was one worth a suspension, as was Richards under the head hunting policy they adopted. Maybe 3 or 4 yrs ago....not. I wish the hit was slow mo....it looked more like a cross check than an elbow to the face,
