Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished.

Preview: Buffalo Sabres at Philadelphia Flyers, 7 p.m. EST. One day after topping the Calgary Flames at home, the Sabres visit Philly in a game that can give them a true test of how good they really are. Ray Emery(notes) is expected to be in net for the Flyers after backstopping them to wins in their last five games. In that stretch Emery has posted a .954 save-percentage and 1.39 goals-against average. It should be quite the goaltending duel between Ryan Miller(notes) and Emery.

Preview: San Jose Sharks at St. Louis Blues, 8 p.m. EST. Times are tough for the Blues and owner Dave Checketts let it be know that he's not happy: "All year long, we should compete for first or second in our division. This team is good enough and that's what we expect from them. I think everyone can expect that. And it's top to bottom ... everybody in the organization has to be on that page. It's time to win. We have everything we need to win. There's no excuse." They'll face a red hot Sharks team that is 8-0-2 in their last ten games.

Preview: Vancouver Canucks at Colorado Avalanche, 10 p.m. EST. A losing streak is going to come to end as these two face each other for the third time already season (both shutouts). Milan Hejduk(notes) is expected to be back in the lineup for the Avs who are trying to avoid a three-game losing streak, which would be their longest of the season.

Check out the Y! Sports scores and schedule page for previews of the other three games tonight.

Evening Reading

-The Florida Panthers will announce new ownership on Monday that promise "We're going to be there with them, we're going to be crying with them, we're going to be laughing with them." With them, not at them. [Sun-Sentinel]

-Evgeni Malkin(notes) returns tonight for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but they lose Chris Kunitz(notes) for two weeks. [Tribune-Review]

-Superstitions on the Chicago Blackhawks include: boxing the team trainer, carrying a tennis ball, and a "4:30 chew".  [ESPN Chicago]

-Sure, Rick Nash's(notes) shootout winnerl last night wacky and fun, but Maxim Afinogenov(notes) showed us some vintage dangling against the Kings:

Puck Buddy Comment of the Day: "Hi, I'm Marty's sister in Law, and he will always be number one with me."

Bold Prediction: Anze Kopitar(notes) takes a stranglehold on the scoring lead with a three-point night.

The more unbelievable thing about Afinogenov's goal video was that people actually bought the Thrasher's ugly third jersey.

i wish emory the best of luck, he has been just flamed by the media and fans and everyone for the past. i hope he leads the flyers to the playoffs just to shut the critics up and prove them wrong. good luck to the flyers in the east.

hey wysh, i noticed how in lots of the previews, where they list the "notes" for each team, lots of the notes are from back in april and may (ex. the ones for the canucks-avalanche game talk about how pavol demitra had scored in their last game and how the avalanche are about to officially finish last in the conference). could you possibly inform the editors who put up the previews to make sure they are putting up the most recent notes?
    thx :)

i'm gonna have to take ANA off my "contenders" list. i just don't think they have "it' anymore. losing beaucheman was bad but losing pronger is one step too many. they need to do a mass liquidation: lupul, niedermayer, giguere, artuykm, etc. DET and PIT are all that remain. as usual, i'm tempted to put SJ on the list but past years have taught me better.

@ #4 Missy : Good call. I don't think Demitra scored last game, I just saw him today at Whole Foods in West Vancouver. Oh, and either he was wearing a rather bulky sweater or he's gained about 25 pounds during his time on LTIR. Nice.
Great goal by Maxim. He always comes up with those big ones. You know, the ones that make a tight 5-1 game into a 6-1 blowout. Sometimes he'll score late to cement a 4-0 victory. Last night was huge though, LA was thinking comeback till that put the final nail in the coffin.

Welp, Pens-Bruins game has taught us that even with a puck sensor, we will still have mysterious and potentially blown goal calls....

stacey, i want to put my flames on that conteder list so bad, but man, if they were playing anyone other than toronto tonight they would have been buried in the second period.
that avs-canucks game has shootout written all over it. two teams on losing streaks always go to a shootout.

Tampa Bay got absolutely hosed by the refs tonight. Comparable, if not worse, to the Hochuli call in the NFL last year

habs - i was pullin' for gainey's ballsy trades but it looks like they're gonna have his head on a stick instead:( they play "open" hockey and have players that are fun to watch but i think they're lacking in a few areas. at least you're not a toronto fan and also you can boast that you're paying other teams salaries with your teams' income. you just paid the preds salary to beat you!! you guys should be in the streets.
mclean - your team is a total mystery to me. i think they need a better coach. you have the materials needed to win but you don't go far in the playoffs. what gives? maybe a better 2nd and 3rd line?

Pittsburgh played a good game, but the Bruins could have won. They blew it with about 10 seconds left in the game. If their scoring comes back, as in this game, they're back!!

Habs1, I know you from Habs inside/out site, Formerly known as Gilles Poisson, when you were banned from that site over a year ago for being the only fan there with balls enough to call out Bob Gainey and his terrible job performance there. Well, tonight, not only are fans at that site All calling for Gaineys scalp, they are even mentioning you as the frontrunner of what has taken place this year. The only fan to stand up to the entire Habs Nation at the Montreal Gazette, they are now on their knees now. Just wanted you to know, Gilles Poisson lives on. As Habs1.
