Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Previews: Spotlighting the key games in NHL action, news and views as well as general frivolity. Make sure to stop back here for the nightly Three Stars when the games are finished.

Preview: Carolina Hurricanes at Colorado Avalanche, 9 p.m. EST. Peter Budaj(notes) was supposed to get the spot-start tonight for Colorado, but he's down with flu-like symptoms. So it'll be Craig Anderson(notes) again for the surprising Avs, against a struggling Hurricanes team that is moving Rod Brind'Amour(notes) to wing.

Preview: Minnesota Wild at St. Louis Blues, 8 p.m. EST. The Minnesota Wild are looking for their first road win of the season (0-6) against the Blues, who may be jumbling up their lines a bit with David Perron(notes) on a checking line with Jay McClement(notes) and B.J. Crombeen(notes) as well as David Backes centering Andy McDonald(notes) and T.J. Oshie(notes). Watch the Game Live on Yahoo! Sports.

Preview: Florida Panthers at Pittsburgh Penguins, 7:30 p.m. EST. The Penguins seek to improve their start to 9-1. Tomas Vokoun(notes) gets the nod in goal for the Panthers. From George Richards: "Florida is also the only team in the league whose leading scorer (six guys with two goals) only has two goals."

Evening Reading

Alex Ovechkin(notes) is fined for his "slewwwwwwwwww foooooooooooooot" on Rich Peverley(notes): $2,500, according to Tarik El-Bashir. Poor Ovie; looks like he's going to have to switch to actual toilet paper for a week. [NHL]

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Tom Gilbert(notes) has a new blog up, offering up memories of Jason Strudwick(notes) doing a Karaoke duet with Hilary Duff. He doesn't mention what song they sang, so we'll just assume it was the theme from MTV's "My Super Sweet 16." [Oilers]

Los Angeles Kings signings today: "Jonathan Quick has signed a three-year contract extension worth $1.8 million per year. Davis Drewiske(notes) has signed a three-year contract extension worth $600,000 per year." Please note that Rich Hammond reported on specific salary info, which is something official team Web sites usually do not do. [Kings Insider]

Pavol Demitra(notes) is not durable. [White Towel]

• The AHL: For fans of massive annual roster turnover. [American Chronicle]

Scott Gomez(notes) ridicules a report that claims a fist fight with Sergei Kostitsyn(notes) is what ended the winger's time with the Montreal Canadiens; Gomez also claims it was actually he who injured defenseman Andrei Markov(notes): "The Markov thing is true. He was at my house and I knifed him." [CP]

Puck Buddy Comment of the Day: It can't be anything but this ripped-from-the-headlines piggish comedy from Benny:

"Kyle Wellwood is so fat Steve Phillips wants to bang him."

Memes are colliding ...

Bold Prediction: Antti Miettinen(notes) gets his first of the season against the Blues.

Why would the Avs want to start Budaj? Was it because they just felt like throwing a game for the heck of it, or the cobwebs in Budajs' gear could be knit into a sweater by now? Leave Anderson right where he is and Budaj never will be, in front of the pucks.

Reinprecht doubles his season goal total in a 3 - 2 loss. Very sad. The Panthers couldn't even make Letang cough up his lunch money.

According to my former self ...Gilles Poisson.. at Habs inside/out site, Mike Ribeiro was sent packing a few years ago not because of the partying, but because of a feud he had with Saku Koivu.. Now we hear the Serghei Kostitsyn ruckus with Scott Gomez....Maybe he wanted to borrow a million to pay off all those ganstas he and his brother hang out with.

    @ "Hot" (unverified) Stacy.
He got messed up on that hit. Darcy Tucker is easy to hate, but nobody wants to see a serious injury. Didn't look like Ruutu meant to hurt him.

maybe the Avalanche can keep things going only if Matt Duchene can play more like Joe Sakic and score more goals. smart draft this year and getting Ryan o Reilly and this team has been a huge surprise. Besides Duchene will be a great hockey player.
