Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• The Detroit Red Wings 2007-08 Stanley Cup champions rings look like they cost more than the Coyotes are currently worth. Captain Nicklas Lidstrom explains the solemn ceremony during which the Wings received their rings: "They showed the highlights, and then they had girls with big trays with all the rings on them, and when it was all over, they all walked out to each table and handed all the boxes out." Girls ... big trays ... boxes ... got it. [Freep]

• One Buffalo Sabres fan makes the case that losing means more to fan loyalty than winning. "Are Yankees fans as loyal as Cub fans? I think not. Are Patriots fans as loyal as Bills fans, are Red Wings fans as devoted as Sabres fans? The answer is a resounding no. We can't have our squads win it all, for if they do the mystique will vanish. The persecution complex that we all love to embrace will disappear." [Buffalo News]

• The New York Rangers are slumping, and Mats Sundin will be in New York this weekend. Coincidence? Totally. But it doesn't mean something couldn't happen between the two parties later this month. [Rangers Report]

Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis on Mats Sundin: "[Pursuing him] hasn't been a relentless, daily thing for me." He prefers to call it "negotiational stalking." [Vancouver Sun]

• A look at the Edmonton Oilers' "three-headed goaltending monster" of Dwayne Roloson, Mathieu Garon and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers. Also a three-headed monster: King Ghidorah. [NHL.com]

• The Top 10 hockey books of 2008. Sadly, "The Erotic Awakening of Bruce Boudreau" is scheduled for 2009. [Joe Pelletier]

• Hey, remember the St. Louis Blues "fan bailout plan" in which the team was going to cover someone's mortgage payments for four months? Say hello to Jeff and Pam Hicks of Alton, IL, who hit the jackpot at a recent game. [Blues]

• U.S.S. Hal Gill is in dry dock for two-to-four weeks with a bum shoulder. [Penguins]

Pavol Demitra is getting the scapegoat thing with the Canucks, as the free-agent forward slumps offensively. [National Post]

• Jibblescribbits presents the Colorado Avalanche's three stars so far this season. Man, what does Brother Budaj have to do to earn some respect up in here? [Jibblescribbits]

• Really interesting piece by Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch about how the dazzling end-to-end offensive defensemen like Paul Coffey are gone. Or, as the subhead puts it, "An evolving game now designed to limit open ice means dominant offensive defensemen are rare." Covering the Columbus Blue Jackets blue line certainly leaves one jaded, huh? [Dispatch, and more from Snapshots]

• New York Post headline: "RANGERS TRY TO FORGET BEATINGS." Surprisingly, this isn't a story about Troy Mallette and Dale Purinton. [NY Post]

• Finally, at the risk of running two Scott Hartnell stories back-to-back (stay tuned, please), here's the Philadelphia Flyers forward giving us the Bobby Flay treatment with a cooking segment for NHL Network:

Is that the one where Bruce Boudreu goes to rehab with Sinbad and Rob Thomas?
And whenever girls bring out trays of rings for me it usually doesn't involve hockey. But it does usually involve some form of box. It'll all be in my memoir "The Erotic Awakening of Adam Jones."

Those Stanley Cup rings are the sweetest I've ever seen! Even if they had to beat the Penguins to get them!

i was at the blues game where the gave out the bailout money. the couple got booed because there seats were in the lower bowl. heard a few people mumble that if they could afford those seats, they don't need the bail out. kinda like the automakers and their private jets, i guess.

I think what wysh is so eloquently saying via the buffalo with the fan base is that everyone loves being the victim. "Feel sorry for me, I like the Cubs/Panthers/Bills". Win too much, and all of a sudden its unacceptable for your team to be 5th best in the conference rather than first. Nothing turns on you like fans of winners-become-losers. Just ask the Lightning.

Yeah... If you would have actually read and comprehended what he was saying you'd think different. It's easy to love a team like the Wings because they're almost always very good. He's talking about teams that can still have a very devoted fan base even when their team is consistently getting their ass kicked. It's two different things.

considering the ring says "Stanley Cup Champions" directly on the ring I'd start with that.

"even when their team is consistently getting their ass kicked"
You mean like the Wings were in the 70's & 80's? I guess only we old timers remember when the Wings stunk and nobody knew how to pronounce "Yzerman".
Man, I don't ever want to go back to those days...
That ring sure is sweet though.

The Buffalo News publishes the stupidest "My Views".
That View does not represent all Sabre fans. I would love if the Sabres won it every year.
Losing doesn't make you a better or more devoted fan. It just makes you a fan that puts up with lots of disappointment.

how can anyone say the sabres have better fans then the wings do. this isnt an insult to the sabres fans they are great. even tried to pay a coaches fine once thats a good fan base. but the wings fans have been fantastic to we go to the wings games all over the country, we sell out other arenas every night. and yes we were there when they didnt win the cups. we buy more gear then most fans to support our team. and remember if we were not paying for the other teams failure to pay their bills we would have more money to do more. if someone wants to insult a fanbase how about the fans of teams that need to be propped up by the wings rangers flyers and leafs. there is a fan problem not enough butts in the seats to pay the bills. thats how you can tell if the fans are good
