Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.
• Pavol Demitra finally ends the needless delay, signing a two-year, $8 million deal with the Vancouver Canucks, who are evidently tired of losing talent and decided to add some. Talent that's "arguably past his prime in a Markus Naslund sort of way," according to Now Public. But Vancouver bloggers are apparently pleased. [Now Public and Canucks and Beyond and Red Light District]
• Has Alexander Radulov bolted for Russia? [Kuklas Korner]
• The five worst signings of the free-agent frenzy. Four of the five are rather no-brainer, but watch Michael Ryder blow up in Boston. Just watch. And how does Jeff Finger not warrant a place on this hallowed Top 5 list? Just trying to be contrarian? [The Hockey News]
• Nikolai Khabibulin heading to the Colorado Avalanche? Just when you thought it was safe to assume Peter Budaj might get 60 starts. [All Things Avs]
• The Tampa Bay Lightning changed the sign outside the St. Pete Times Forum once when it was discovered that No. 1 draft pick Steven Stamkos was a right-handed shot, not a lefty. Well, thanks to the trade of Dan Boyle, they're changing it again. Might we recommend an Etch-a-Sketch? [Lightning Strikes]
• Speaking of the Toronto Maple Leafs, they and Don Meehan believe defenseman Jonas Frogren is an unrestricted free agent. The NHL believes Frogren is a rookie. So the League nixed a contract offer between the Swede and the Leafs. Wah-wah. [The Star]
• Melt Your Face Off continues its NHL Mascots: Exposed series with a look at the furry creatures entertaining children for the Vancouver Canucks, Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals. Who knew that Slapshot once shared a cab with British ski jumping Olympian Eddie Edwards? [MYFO]
• The eagle eyes of our own Sean Leahy spy a retro-jersey in the NHL 09 trailer. [Going Five Hole]
• "When he's not stick handling, he loves to be part of the chuckwagon world." If that doesn't get you to read an article about Curtis Glencross of the Calgary Flames, nothing will. [CBC Sports]
• Wrap Around Curl has one of the best pieces of hockey writing of the week, that manages to bring together Victoria's Secret, Thomas Hobbes and Quentin Tarantino. [Wrap Around Curl]
• Al Scrachan takes apart the flaws in the current NHL labor situation, including this line: "The system tries to make socialists out of hard-core capitalists." [FOX Sports]
• The home of Alexei Yashin and Carol Alt is up for sale and can be yours for the tidy sum of $11 million. The Islanders could have afforded the place, but they had to pay $17.63 million to buy out some underperforming Russian. [FanHouse]
• Finally and speaking of Russia, the NHL and the new Russian Continental Hockey League have reached an agreement that will keep one from raiding the other's talent, and vice versa. Earlier on Puck Daddy, I said that this Russian League seemed like it existed to one day become absorbed by the NHL as the European part of a Super Mega Hockey League one day. Cue Bill Daly: "They want to establish a new order and a new league that may one day be broader than Russia ... It is an ambitious business plan and it looks like they have capable leadership."
More on this tenuous agreement from Jeff Klein of the New York Times, who owns this story, as well as Scarlett Ice and Rich Hammond at Inside the Kings.
