Max Talbot(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins tells 105.9 The X that he hates Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin(notes), and that meeting him off the ice confirmed what he had heard about him ... which is that Ovechkin is "a real douche." [Audio]

• In case you haven't heard, the only story that could surpass the Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) Saga on the annoy-o-meter is back: The Phoenix Coyotes ownership dilemma, as the city of Glendale has gone public with complaints that Ice Edge has yet to file all of its paperwork regarding its finances. Which has many speculating, and reporting that the Ice Edge bid is in trouble. Which, evidently, the Winnipeg police department has more influence than any of us could imagine. [AZ Central]

• Alex Frolov is officially a New York Rangers winger, signing a one-year deal for $3 million. Scotty Hockey's take: "I don't hate Frolov. I hate what he stands for. He is the latest mercenary that Sather has signed to maintain this mediocre team's meager reputation." [Scotty Hockey]

UPDATE: No Kovalchuk, no Gagne ... but the Los Angeles Kings have themselves a spiffy new Alexei Ponikarovski. [Dreger]

• Good to see Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has some perspective on the seriousness of cap circumvention in the NHL: "Do you admire a criminal lawyer who gets a murderer off on a technicality? So why would there be admiration or appreciation for finding a loophole that somehow defeats the purpose of a collective bargaining agreement that's designed to put teams on the same footing?" [National Post]

• Tribute to Pittsburgh Penguins PA announcer John Barbero, who passed away at 65. [Post Gazette]

• Down Goes Brown's guide for players spending the day with the Stanley Cup: "Impress your friends by pointing out that the engravings on the Stanley Cup include several typos and other errors. And in 1999, the Buffalo Sabres are misspelled as 'the Dallas Stars'."[DGB]

• Mirtle on the plight of the 100 or so free agents still looking for hockey homes. [Globe & Mail]

• Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland admits that the contracts for Henrik Zetterberg(notes) and Johan Franzen(notes) are a "creative way of bringing the cap number down" but that they're legal under the CBA. In any case, don't worry about the NHL coming after those contracts retroactively if it wins the Ilya Kovalchuk arbitration. [Freep]

Mike Knuble(notes) taking a faceoff? It's a Winter Classic miracle! [Getty]

• Finally, here's Sidney Crosby(notes) on NHL Network from the Winter Classic presser. Might not be the best interview during which to play the athlete cliché drinking game.
