Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• In the Pittsburgh Penguins' game against the Atlanta Thrashers last night, Sidney Crosby jumped into the middle of a melee and starting throwing blows. OK, make that low blows. If you want to see the shot he gave Boris Valabik, check out the 12-second mark of this video. Or watch this much more theatrical version by YouTuber "vancityhockey":

• Meanwhile, the Penguins sign Max Talbot to a two-year extension, which is really great news for Pittsburgh-based puck bunnies. And Ryan Whitney is beginning a conditioning assignment in the AHL. [Post-Gazette]

• Fun all-star game suggestion from Jason Kay of The Hockey News: Team Superstars vs. Team Exile. In other words, "heroes" versus villains like 'Sloppy' Sean Avery and 'Radioactive' Ray Emery. [THN]

• Lou Lamoriello puts a gag order on goalie Scott Clemmensen, making him unavailable to the media after blaming media access for a poor performance in Toronto. Rich Chere, veteran reporter, isn't pleased. [Puck the Media]

• If you haven't seen the Zamboni falling off the truck video we had on Three Stars last night, please to be checking it out on Leahy's site. [Going Five Hole]

• Big-time fun from Stanley Cup of Chowder: a game of "spot the Whale" as the Boston Bruins face the Carolina Hurricanes this weekend. [SCoC]

Maxim Afinogenov of the Buffalo Sabres can make fans swoon with pretty moves before failing to deliver anything substantial. It's official: He's the Pussycat Dolls of hockey. [Buffalo News]

• The media tries to get the trade winds a-blowin' for the Edmonton Oilers. [Edmonton Sun]

• Are travel restrictions coming for the NCAA hockey tournaments? "If approved as is, this means that, for the NCAA tournament, the committee would only be allowed to seed the top four teams in the bracket (i.e. the four No. 1 seeds). It would be able to do so regardless of geography (although current practice for hockey is to place them 'closest to home' anyway). Meanwhile, the remaining 12 teams would have to be placed in the closest geographical region possible, regardless of where it falls in the 5-16 Pairwise pecking order." [CHN]

• Japers and Ted Leonsis get into a tiff about the quality if ice at Verizon Center for Washington Capitals games. We'll say this: post-tiff between the two, it was cranked up to "arctic" at the arena last night. [Japers' Rink]

Mike York is back for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

• The Caps activate Jose Theodore and send Simeon Varlamov back to AHL affiliate Hershey after winning his first two NHL starts in net. [AP]

• After last night's 6-0 drubbing at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings, how are the San Jose Sharks' faithful responding? Mike Chen believes a heaping portion of humble pie from the Wings could really help in the long-run. "Last night was a lesson in humility, and the adversity that comes with it is hopefully a stepping stone on the way to better things." [Chen]

• Fear the Fin was rather upset that the Sharks didn't at least go down in a fight during the third period. [Fear the Fin]

• Meanwhile, there was an interesting story after the game for the Red Wings: Marian Hossa actually passed on being named the first star against the Sharks, in deference to the heroics of teammates like Pavel Datsyuk and Ty Conklin. Pretty cool. [Red Wings Corner]

• Finally, sometimes a picture's all you need:

Crosby is getting fiesty with the fistacuffs. Maybe he is going for a "tougher" guy image. Good luck. Just keep scoring points and pissing non-Penguins fans off. They cry, you score, they say you cry, you still score. We love it.

Why did Crosby just attempt to insert his entire gloved fist into the Atlanta player's a$$?? Shouldn't he at least remove his glove and apply some lubrication first?? Where has common courtesy gone, what has happened to this game?

You also gotta love how the commentator says "How is that any different than what Marty McSorley did to Brashear?".......I want the weed that that guy is smoking. It must be super-duper dank, the best quality of weed possible to make you think that a sucker punch with gloves on is the same as whacking a player in the head with your stick.

No chance he intended to hit the guy like that. He was just thowing and hoping to hit something. It's nice to see a Captain stick up for his team.... even if he sucks at fighting.

Yeah, he's such a tough guy, punching a man in his balls from behind.
I guess we know what "behavoir" Malkin was talking about. Crosby is the biggest [profane] on the ice today. Punch WITH GLOVES ON, from BEHIND, and then whining to the refs and media "I only threw one punch!"
Penguins fans, that Kool-Aid must be good!

duck...duck....GOOSE. Honestly who does that, man up if you want to hit a guy, not double team the guy when he's already on the ground, and from behind. Exactly why he shouldn't be the face of the NHL.

I believe he was attempting a donkey punch there...harder to do on ice obviously. Orpik mashing that dude in front was sweet, except for Kovy pinballing a shot in off of them.

"They cry, you score"...thanks for providing a perfect example. Didn't say he was a tough guy, just said maybe he's going for that by jumping into your average NHL melee.

Godard is the protector now since Laraque left.

Props to Crosby for realizing that Valabik is a monster and the only way to take him down was to go right for the junk.
There's a Semin joke somewhere in there but I digress.

Notice how Crosby won't engage in a fight face to face but will come in to blindside a guy. Maybe Claude should come back into the league to fix such problems.

If you remember the Rangers put a gag order on Avery and was not permitted to appear on an any unsupervised interviews. If it's one thing Lou likes is control.
Hey Wysh 30 points for spotting Marty at that game.

Great, the Sharks lost two in a row and are pissed off, and return home to play the Rangers, who have been very fortunate on their road trip so far. Just the opponent the Rangers need, an angry Top Team in the league who can play hard aggressive hockey who happen to be unbeaten in regulation at home this season.
Orr-Shelley better happen AT LEAST ONCE if not TWICE.
Sidney Crosby is a pansy. If there was any doubt before, that has now been erased. Forever. He may be a great hockey player, but he is still a pansy.
And what was with Corey Sarich the other night, going twice, while WEARING A SHIELD?

I don't know, I still think the main reason people don't like Crosby is because of his behavior.

Argh...why must IT block u-tube? I really wanted to see Dr Crosby, proctologist, at work conducting his first prostate exam. From the sounds of things he was very enthusiatic but needs to develop his bedside manner a tad and use the proper technique.
Any truth to the rumour I'm starting that Crosby told reporters that he "phong'd him good?"

I've always been a fan of Crosby--my 9 year-old even has a Crosby jersey and I felt Crosby was a good kid. I have lost a lot of respect for him now. I don't care if you have on gloves or not, you do NOT hit a man with his face on the ice and who is already tangled up with another player (Tanger). You ESPECIALLY do not hit him in the genitals! Valabik handled himself well in the situation--he didn't get up and punch Crosby out, he kept his cool. I doubt this will be forgotten though. I know I won't forget it. I won't be cheering for the Pens any time soon. That's a shame really because I've always enjoyed watching them. Way to lose fans!
