Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning(-ish) Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• This week's edition of WNY Hockey features an article by managing editor Jim Kelley, who reports that Buffalo Sabres Tom Golisano is looking to sell the team and has made overtures to Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie, who wants to relocate a franchise to Canada. Golisano had previously said he wouldn't sell to Balsillie in the past because of his desire to relocate; WNY reports that the Sabres would play "part of a home schedule in Hamilton's Copps Coliseum." [WROC-TV]

• All that said, Sabres managing partner Larry Quinn said today: "We are not in negotiations to sell the team and as we have stated in the past, we will never entertain discussions to move the team out of Buffalo" Meanwhile, the Hamilton Spectator reports a no comment from the Balsillie camp and that "the Sabres' lease at HSBC Arena is airtight and the team could never be moved, because three different levels of government would have to approve." [The Spec]

• According to Bob McKenzie, the Tampa Bay Lightning have placed Radim Vrbata on waivers. RDS adds that it's actually Vrbata and Chris Gratton. Yawn ... just another day in sunny Tampa. [Kuklas Korner]

Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray says the team will make the necessary room to sign Mats Sundin. What's the salary cap in their dreams again? [Ottawa Sun]

• "Yes, there is now a full-length children's book about how awesome Wendel Clark is." A review of "Wendel and the Great One" by Mike Leonetti. [Down Goes Brown]

• The Pensblog calls on its army of acolytes to stuff the ballot box for Evgeni Malkin in an effort to knock another Montreal Canadiens player out of the NHL All-Star Game. We're pretty sure these guys could have gotten Ron Paul elected if given enough time. And if U.S. elections were held on the Internet and through text-message voting. [Pensblog]

• George James Malik has a great roundup of news and opinion about this week's Board of Governors meetings and the dire economic forecast the League faces. Here's some sugar on your Cheerios: "Two years from now, guaranteed contracts will become the hot-button issue, and if the world's economy doesn't recover by then, the l-word (lockout) becomes a real concern." [Snapshots]

• The rumor out of Philadelphia is that Columbus Blue Jackets Coach Ken Hitchcock would like to acquire Flyers defenseman Randy Jones. But as Ed Moran points out, the Flyers' soon-to-be logjam on defense will be a breeding ground for such scuttlebutt. [Philly.com]

• Jay Feaster presents the loving, caring, jovial side of Brian Burke only his children and Dave Nonis usually get to see. [THN]

• Taking time out from his busy schedule of stealing Dan Ellis's job, Pekka Rinne speaks with NHL Digest about a great many things, including expanding the size of the nets. "I think that if people decide to change the size of the nets, would be a mistake. All the records and games played before would lose their meaning and new era of hockey would begin." Smart kid, that one. [NHL Digest]

• Congrats to the boys from Battle of California for their Super Big News. [BoC]

• Two Washington Capitals bloggers dare to enter the cathedral of the Air Canada Centre and work with the exalted Toronto hockey media without being condemned as lepers. [On Frozen Blog]

• Boston University gets the best of Boston College in their hockey rivalry weekend, while the Wolverines swept the Spartans over in Michigan. David Booth does not approve. [Slap Shot]

• Agent Tobin Wright has been banned by the Minnesota Wild from their arena, and Michael Russo has the scoop why. An interesting story, considering its potential impact on the Marian Gaborik negotiations. [Star-Tribune]

• And there was much joy on the Puck Daddy fantasy team, as Marc-Andre Fleury begins practicing with the Pittsburgh Penguins again. [Penguins]

• Finally, as the Phoenix Coyotes waive brawler Brian McGrattan, Daniel Carcillo picks up the slack with three fights over the weekend against BJ Crombeen, Roman Polak and Craig Adams. Here's the Crombeen fight; quite a shot from Carcillo.

On the day after the Bills explosion, to be hit with this news, its almost too much for my heart to bear as a Sabres fan. Won't someone be my huckleberry?

The Tampa Bay Lightning faithful have to be loving Barry Melrose now! He's too out of touch with today's players and game? Hell no! They were whiners and softies under his command and his "replacement" knows this to be true. They have not responded any better to him. Wonder why???

It's a [profane] shame what's going on in Buffalo if the reports on Basillie trying to get his grubby hands on the Sabres are true. It's bad enough the Bills have already started setting up shop in Toronto. Us Pens fans sympathize with you Buffalo. Don't let them do this to you. Stand up and fight for your teams. Mail the city, mail the teams, and most importantly continue going to the games and be show your passion as you always do.

Oh your team better sell out,
    and the owners better spend,
you better have a good arena,
    and the fans better attend,
Cause Jim Basille is comin' to town...
Does this guy wake up every morning, spin a big wheel, and then say "Today, I'm going to attempt to buy this team." ? He's like the NHL's equivilant of a nuclear power plant. Everyone knows the benefit of having one, but no one wants one in their town.

So let's see what Bettman gives the Wing's player for telling the ref to "get the [expletive deleted] out of the way" on Saturday, Mickey even mentioned it on air.

I still find it hard to believe there is talk of removing fights from the NHL. Only gripe anyone should have is that these guys don't drop the helmets too. Those things are made of some seriously tough plastic and I can't imagine glancing a blow off your opponent's dome is going to feel that great on the knuckle. In fact watching some of these fights and their aftermath you'll see the fighters skating to the box holding their now bloody knuckles!

I really hope Buffalo isn't shipped away to Canada. Like the Penguins, hockey just wouldn't be the same without the Buffalo Sabres.

Are you seriously celebrating the Pens for stuffing the ballot? Go look on a Pens message board and you can find directions for how to use scripts to even get around the CAPTCHA. They're every bit as bad as Habs fans who cheated.

"Other sources have told The Spectator on several occasions that the Sabres’ lease at HSBC Arena is airtight and the team could never be moved, because three different levels of government would have to approve."
The Sabres mean too much to downtown Buffalo economics for the city to allow them to get up and leave. It won't happen...I mean, I really hope it doesn't happen.

How sad is it that the Caps fans can't get Ovechkin half the votes he'd need to to beat Koivu, who's barely scored as many goals as Ovechkin did last year in the past 4 years combined?
In other news, Komisarek is tied with Carey Price in points this season, and he's looking like a lock to get voted in. Can't you ballot box stuffers at least write in Hamrlik ?

While it may look like a blatant free-agent disaster, the Vrbata signing was actually pure genius. By flipping over to play in the Czech Republic, Radim (and his $9 mill) is looking to be the key figure in Koules' new spin-off, "Saw: Europe". The European blockbuster of the year simply consists of documentary footage of Lightning management meetings, text transcripts of 'negotiations' with agents of over-the-hill players, and simply repeating the signings they made. Euro hockey fans will call it the scariest horror movie they've ever seen. It may also win a Palme D'Or in the Musical/Comedy/Farce category.

We should introduce that Sabres fan to Patrick Kane. She's probably a bit old for him.
That would be funny if Toronto looted Buff of its NHL & NFL teams. Next stop - White house. Do you know we set the White House on fire during the War of 1812? We did, and we won that war.

Brian S (brianguy) Though they are few, there are some pretty hot Sabre's fans out there. I don't know why they never take their pictures, but they do exist. I think they may actually be embarrassed and don't want to compromise their beauty with the association. I know this because I live in Western New York & have seen them. Maybe they'll let them take their pictures again when they get rid of the ridiculous "one horned hairy banana slug of western New York" logo they have now.

I don't know about you but I can't afford a ticket in these hard economic times.
Buffalo is only good for one thing and thats wings. Yup, after all these years that's what they'll end up with.. really good wings. I like mine with suicide hot sauce ON the wings. Mmm.. wings... Buffalo has wings, the Bills, the Sabres and the Bisons none of which has brought a major championship to the city let alone true undying support.
I'm in agreement to stop calling Balsillie's name for every sport relocation opportunity.
Its good that you understand that Balsillie is the only guy who:
    a. has the money.
    b. likes pro-sports.
    c. has good friends in high places.
    d. is bored spending his time on the poor and homeless.
    e. won't die in the near future.
    f. has no heirs to his fortune.
A deal would have already been done if he REALLY wanted it but there is so much discouragement in the process that he may never really like the deal. Buffalo needs to rally their city and figure out if they really are meant for pro-sports in general.
Btw, Carcillio is a badass on skates and Phoenix is lucky to have a guy like that when it comes to dropping the gloves.

I think the NHL should announce on the last day of voting that Messier, Francis, and Lemiux won the east for forwards. There is only one Montreal player on that list who actually deserves to be a starting all-star, and EVERYONE in the league knows it. Koivu, Price, Tanguay might deserve to be farther down the list, but right now Malkin/Crosby and, in fairness, prolly Ovetchkin (I'm a Bruins fan, and Savard really deserves a nod) with well Thomas in goal (yeah, saw that one coming) Anderson as a backup, and say Markov and Wideman (because Green is injured right now) as starting defense. Not that it any of it matters, but maybe it would if things like this didn't happen to make the all-star game a joke..
