Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• As you read this (assuming you're reading it between 12:30-1 p.m. EST, Dave Pagnotta and I are talking hockey on the podcast. Call in to chat at 646-929-1165, and listen back to it here.

• So Sean Avery could make his triumphant return to the New York Rangers tonight against the New York Islanders; if he does play, Rangers fans will welcome back their cult hero from the seats of their arch rival's arena. And that would be fun. Avery is happy hockey is back in his life. Larry Brooks believes Operation: Attitude Adjustment has been accomplished in the last two weeks for the Rangers.

Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on trading Scottie Upshall: "Scottie is a good kid, we all like him, but we got a guy back that plays a similar game to Scottie, but a little more aggressive. It's a better fit for us right now in the long run in a lot of ways." Daniel Carcillo as an upgrade of Upshall is a tough sell; better just stick to "it was a total cap move." [Philly.com]

• The Hockey Guy looks at life without Chris Pronger for the St. Louis Blues. Which is to say "life." [Hockey Guy]

• The University of Michigan and Michigan State will face off in another outdoor game tentatively slated for Dec. 11, 2010 at Michigan's football stadium ... but Ken Holland doesn't expect the Red Wings to be an active participant in, say, a double-header. Puck Buddy Jessica writes that this is now two outdoor games for Michigan in one year: They'll also play at Camp Randall stadium against Wisconsin on Feb 6., 2010. [MLive]

• Lou Lamoriello will be on Gary Bettman's radio show today. We're rooting for conversations about the goalie trapezoid and why Bettman allows NBC to program the Rangers and Flyers every other week. [NHL]

• The delightful Steve Downie gets the mandatory minimum 20-game suspension from the AHL for abuse of an official. Another massive suspension for the former Flyer and current Tampa Bay Lightning farmhand. We hereby nominate the renaming of any player who has multiple suspensions of over 20 games as someone afflicted with "Downie's Syndrome." [Bolts Report]

• Bryan Murray on Pascal Leclaire coming to play for that goaltender graveyard known as the Ottawa Senators: "I talked to people that I know in the business and that have been around him. They all think that he is a No. 1 guy. We hope the mental part of the game goes along with it." [Sun Media]

• Great piece by Earl Sleek on the deadline, as the Battle of California's columnist saw favorite player Sammy Pahlsson traded by the Anaheim Ducks. [BoC]

• Were the San Jose Sharks the only winner in the Pacific Division at the trade deadline? [Defending Big D]

• One interesting aspect of the Sharks' moves yesterday: Both Kent Huskins and Travis Moen have Stanley Cup rings, bringing just a bit more postseason success to a locker room that still needs it. [Seagate]

• Nice TSN roundtable on the deadline. TSN really killed it yesterday. Well, save for Pierre. [TSN]

• Tony was not a fan of NHL Network's deadline coverage. [The Confluence]

• Jagr's Omsk team pulls an upset in the KHL playoffs. Yes, there are KHL playoffs. They didn't run out of money. Or goalies. [Slap Shot]

• NCAA bracketology for the Frozen Four. [The College Hockey Blog]

• Puck Daddy approved winger Milan Lucic is about ready to return for the Boston Bruins, practicing on the No. 1 line with Marc Savard and Phil Kessel. Reinforce the glass and tell your goon that Looch is on the way. [Bruins Blog]

• George James Malik thinks the worst rumor of the deadline was Manny Fernandez to the Detroit Red Wings. Sorry, but that doesn't touch Scott Gomez for Derek Morris. [Snapshots]

• Which Arrested Development character is your NHL team? Awesome. [Ms. Conduct]

• Finally, here's Berube vs. Poeschek from 89-90. Old. Time. Hockey.

Unfortunately, Avery is a real X-factor for the Rangers. The Rangers don't have anyone else that is a game-changer.

I second the nomination of Downie's Syndrome. I can't believe we traded Upshall for Downie's seperated at birth twin. I understand the capology of it but still fell there had to be a better way.

A guy with 7 goals on the year, Upshall, is really being made into such a better player then he really is today.

Most Rangers critics out there are themselves.....my Ranger fan buddy is excited about tonight's game like the trade was a huge deal. I don't think we'll see any more scoring with the players they added. Same thing with the Penguins. They are on a roll right now and just added some grit and good leadership. I doubt that will screw up their recent resurgence.

Flyers with all this really good, young talent, and you're going into "playoff war" with Biron and Nittymakki as your goalies? Cest si no bon.

Look at it this way, the Flyers traded Upshall as far away from the playoffs as any player could ever be: the Coyotes. So it's not like he's going to come back to bite the Flyers in the @zz or anything.

I'm not saying Upshall was all that great just that the guy they got in return, and giving up a second round pick as well, is difficult to accept as a good deal for the Flyers.

James are you back, you tool? Biron stood on his head for the first two rounds last year and Niittymaki only has a Calder Cup and Olympic MVP on his resume. I'll take my chances with either one of them.

msfno1, Upshall (7 goals, 14 assists)is a better player the Carcillo (3 goals, 7 assists) this year. The move was purely cap related. The flyers knew Upshall would deman more money and the Flyers don't have the cap room.
As for the Pens the moves they have made over the past 2 weeks will help them become a more solid team, and like Deker said adds the grit they were missing. Plus having players that are willing to stand in front of the net never hurts.

Interesting how a player who was just missing a brain-mouth filter has to go through "Anger Management" so Gary doesn't have to explain the birds and the bees to his daughter, but a dirty player like Downie who is serving half the season on suspension requires no such "rehabilitation".

As a flyers fan and a season ticket holder I am more than glad to Upshall gone. He was a give away machine and took too many stupid penalties and we need to give Carcillo a chance. I am also having trouble with the second round pick throw in but the move was needed for the cap. Move on already.

I liked the Sharks move of picking up Moen yesterday. I'm not sure how much Huskins will factor in unless there are several injuries to the blue line. He's more of a depth guy for hopefully a long run to the Cup!
    Nice clip from 89-90!

How would anyone know if the goalie played the puck in the off limits area anyway. There is so much screen clutter. They run useless ads and facts over the play so often that one wouldn't know there was a game being played half the time. I am getting sick of the way the game is being aired and if the clutter does not stop soon trying to sell the game to the casual fan will never happen when die hard fans are tuning out. NBC sucks with its coverage, no pre game no post game no real connection to the fan in any way. One would think there are only 4 teams in the NHL with the same 4 always getting the game of the week (ie. Rangers, Flyers, Pens, Red Wings) and Versus is not any better with no pre game coverage and a lack of talent with passion in the studio besides Keith Jones. We need a person like Don Cherry to livin up the coverage. The constant ads on Versus during the play is unacceptable. Why doesn't the league take a stance against this way of displaying their product. I highly doubt you would see an ad for anything while a footballer is running down the field for a TD or a Pitcher delivering a curve ball to the batter and his attempt to reach first base. Maybe you could post blog about this in-justice Wysh ? Like how many "Face-offs" were missed due to replays and ads running over the 90 second stopage, amount of pop up ads suring the play and posting facts over the play just after the play by play guy just told you the same thing. not to mention the huge logos that seem 3 inches thick at the top of the screen for the 1/4 inch scoeboard. yeah I would love a ratio of uncluttered play to cluttered play I bet the OIT for useless ads and info would be higher than any player on either team.

Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but I always thought Upshall was overrated, and he wasn't rated high to begin with. I thought the trade was a steal for the Flyers...guess we'll see.

at least Avery is in the game he brings a deminsion to the game few players do and gets every body going he has the audacity to do what ever it takes to win and his mouth proves you don't need a brain to play hockey just talent and passion.
