Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Evening Puck Headlines and Previews: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• The NHL vows to look into voting irregularities regarding the Montreal Canadiens that all currently lead their respective categories in All-Star Game balloting. Saku Koivu, Alex Kovalev, Alex Tanguay, Andrei Markov, Mike Komisarek and Carey Price are all closing in on 200,000 votes; Roberto Luongo is currently the only other player over 100,000. "I don't want to jump to conclusions at this point. There is some indication that something has happened ... I'm not at a point where I can say definitively that something has taken place," NHL spokesman Gary Meaghar told CBC Sports. Hey, Gary: Let us help you. Here is the script the Habs fans have been using to auto-vote, and here are the vote totals. The NHL prohibits automated voting; good luck counting the dimpled chads on this one. [CBC Sports]

Mats Sundin with the Tampa Bay Lightning? That would that reduce Stamkos's ice time to, what, about a buck-fifty a game? [Lightning Strikes]

Preview: New Jersey Devils at Washington Capitals (7 p.m. EST; TV: MSG, CSN). The Devils' fracked goalie situation could be cleared up in a hurry this weekend, with back-to-back games against the Capitals. Scott Clemmensen gets the nod tonight, and could start on Saturday if he plays well. If he doesn't, beat writer Tom Gulitti floats the notion of Dwayne Roloson coming to the Devils from the Edmonton Oilers.

Preview: Columbus Blue Jackets at Buffalo Sabres (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: FSOH, MSG). Derick Brassard will finally play with Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius on the Jackets' top line tonight. Seats and dasher boards from The Aud will be auctioned off this weekend, as Buffalo says farewell to the storied arena before it gets blowed up real good.

• Reminder: Reader Comment Awards on Saturday. [Puck Daddy]

• Brian Burke is free. Well, to speak with any team in the league. He'll still cost you around $3 million. [TSN]

• Did the Vancouver Canucks steal their third-jersey logo from a bakery? And if so, is it a sly symbolic tribute to Kyle Wellwood? [Kurtenblog]

Preview: Carolina Hurricanes at Atlanta Thrashers (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: FSS, Yahoo! Sports). The Thrashers, on a four-game winning streak, try to continue to close in on the division leaders Washington and Carolina. No Kari Lehtonen tonight, however. And why doesn't Atlanta have a captain yet?

Preview: Detroit Red Wings at Florida Panthers (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: FSD, FSFL). Well, we certainly hope the winner of our Panthers contest gets loaded on free booze and ends up in a compromising photo with an Ice Dancer we can post on Monday. Just remember: Hands where they can see them, sir.

• We're not sure who Fred Poulin is, but he basically called the Melrose firing on Mirtle's blog this afternoon. Nice job. [From the Rink]

• The Hurricanes are doing 2-for-1 ticket offers for a game against Montreal. [Hurricanes]

Preview: St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks (8:30 p.m. EST; TV: FSMW, CSNC). The Blues are mired in a humbling slump right now, going 0-5-1 in their last six. When it comes to potential trades, the Blackhawks are ready to listen, even if they're not shopping.

Preview: Nashville Predators at Anaheim Ducks (10 p.m. EST; TV: FSS, FSPT). The Ducks haven't played since Sunday. For what it's worth, Jimmy the Moose likes Nashville in this one.

• Fox Sports Net is steadfastly standing behind its "Rinkside" view camera concept for Ducks and Los Angeles Kings games. But it will be modifying it this weekend to better follow the action. [LA Daily News]

• The Islanders' Thomas Pock gets a five-game suspension. [TSN]

• Finally, Kirstie from the Atlanta Thrashers Blue Crew would like to tell you ... sorry, we just lost our train of thought. And everything else we've ever learned. Uh ... wow.

I guess it's appropriate that Kirstie's college team is The Owls, because when I see her all I can think about is hooters.

something just doesn't seem right here. i read all these 2-for-1 ticket deals, buy one game ticket get a ticket for a additional game free, all these types of promotions, when my team has not had any game tickets available for over 2 seasons. yet my team, which takes in over 130 million dollars a year, is not allowed to spend more than 56 million on their players.
does this sound like a healthy league to anyone?
my team is carrying all these lesser-market lesser-revenue teams by its sheer presence. and yet they cannot spend more than those second-rate teams.
someone needs to remove the curse of the bettman before my league isn't worth the third jerseys they use as another gimmick designed to generate revenue out of merchandise sales.

In the words of that reader's comment award winner (he paid off the judge by letting him lip his cigar one drunken evening) BubbaBanjo,
    Bettman, You Stink!
if this doesn't win me an award, i'm going to call for an investigation.

hah!......good luck NHL.....even if you DO put a stop to the voter fraud, this year's all-star voting is shot in the @ss and will probably never be considered to be legit again becauseof.......this........automated..........umm............damn.............oh right I was writing something.....sorry I got distracted..
like I said the integrity of this year's voting is shot and they should void all current votes and have fans revote when better anti-fraud systems are in place...
I have to say it again.............damn

I did my part by writing in Tim Thomas. Then again, it's not as if I'll be watching the All Star game anyways - a bunch of over-hyped players mixed in together who will have little to no chemistry with one another. That, these voting shenanigans, and the fact that the outcome of the game means absolutely nothing = fail.
    Boobs.

Fraud or not the online all-star voting is and always will be a joke. The more extreme that joke can get, the funnier it is.

hey here's an idea..........since they all want it anyways, let the habs fans vote THE ENTIRE TEAM to the eastern roster and expand the west voting to include all 29 other teams...

Depends on your team, Ted V; I can think of one team that brings in about $130M/yr that is actually spending its first year since the lockout with the same cap number as everyone else, as they previously enjoyed a cap number plus a $3.42M Cap number bonus. This hockey hotbed is also densly packed with "experts" but has only Francis Bouillon and the previously maligned Lawn Gnome playing any active part in the league. At least Bouillon is not a total disgrace, eh?

The promotions department in Atlanta deserves All Star votes......any wonder the hometown of Hooters restaurants knows HOT? Here is an idea for all star weekend......Ice Dancers versus the Blue Crew in a game of topless hockey....hands where we can see them girls! They rarely get the All Star game right anyways and it usually is a boredom fest so who cares if they vote in the Canadiens roster.....everyone else vote in the LA Kings and they will have to fix what has always been a joke of a system. And while they are investigating maybe they can look into another fraud....Buttman!

How are Whitney and Gonchar on the ballot...both won't even log a game before at least January. Patrick Sharp deserves a nod in there...and poor Hemsky, I guess being one of the best setup men in the league means few votes.
Love how everyone related to the Canadiens has a crazy bounce. Surprised there's still love for Mike Ribeiro in Montreal.
I get why the all star game is at least partially a popularity contest but in no way should Backstrom be anywhere but neck and neck with Luongo. Osgood? Seriously? Even detroit fans know he's softer than a pillowtop mattress.
