Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Afternoon Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• From NBC spokesman Brian Walker: "If there is a national hockey team, it would be the Red Wings ... They are the NHL version of the Dallas Cowboys. While we don't root, we are very pleased with all four markets left in the playoffs." So there you go: Officially, NBC was pulling for an Ottawa Senators/Nashville Predators final just as hard as they are pulling for a Pittsburgh Penguins/Detroit Red Wings final. Yep, and "ER" is just as good as when Clooney was starring in it. [Dallas Morning News]

• Would Tom Hicks hold off on firing Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington in order to keep the Dallas Stars alone in the sports spotlight? [Texas Rangers blog]

Sean Avery gives an exclusive interview to the NY Post, saying he better be carefuly with his healing spleen: "I guess I'd better watch myself when I'm outside walking that nobody crashes into me or that I don't get hit by a car while I'm crossing the street." That seems a little far-fetched; I mean, does anyone even know if Marty Brodeur is that handy behind the wheel? [NY Post]

• And thus did the Pat Lalime era end in Chicago. OK, maybe it wasn't an "era." More like a lengthy visit with friends. [Off the Posts]

• Those snarklings at The Pensblog have finally turned their Photoshop weaponry on yours truly after I had the nerve to say that the jury should still be out on the Marian Hossa trade. This is, of course, an honor, much like how Roger Ebert once wrote, "All I really still desire is for several Ingmar Bergman characters to sit in a circle and read my reviews to one another in hushed tones." Such an honor, in fact, that I'll still go ahead and link to their wickedly funny (though not entirely safe for work) Photoshop tribute to the New York Rangers.

• That Jim Balsillie tried to purchase the Buffalo Sabres isn't the big news; it's that, this time, he didn't start selling season tickets in Hamilton for a team he didn't own. [Toronto Star]

• Is the legal case against creepy former agent David Frost "dead in the water?" [Sun Media]

• While Roberto Luongo claims to be hopelessly devoted to the Vancouver Canucks, Waiting for Stanley isn't necessarily buying it. [Waiting for Stanley]

• Finally, a bench-clearing brawl video that is too shaky, too brief and has some NSFW language. That said, it's apparently from Scotland, which makes it a bit of a novelty.

This, without a doubt , is the dumbest story I have ever read. What is the actual point here? As for the Wings, I think their strongest suit is their defense. Their goalies are only seeing about 20 shots at most a game. Let's be real here, Osgood and Hasek, while great in their primes, are scrubs at this point in there careers! The Wings play a speed game that is very effective in a bigger, slower West. I do think they have the best shot at winning the Cup, that being said, they are about do for their yearly choke. Don't they win the President's Trophy like every year then choke in the end?

Tell me this. do any of you idiots watch hockey all year long? or do you just turn the tv on when the playoff start? detroit has been the best team all year. and dallas is a good team but detroit is younger and faster. and has the better defense. saying that dallas will give detroit the best series they've had all playoffs yet. but in the end detroit will be to much for dallas.

Correct statement - Detroit Red Wings are our nation's team!!! However, if we're comparing them to the Dallas Cowboys, where the hell are the Red Wings' Cowboys-like cheerleaders????

as a cowboy and coyote fan, i agree the red wings are the cowboy's of the nhl....either you love them or hate them and unfortunately, you will see the wings raise the cup again, they just have too much talent in their system....as for sean avery goes, let see brodeur has how many rings sean?? more than you!!! by the tiume brodeur is done playing in the nhl, he will be the greatest goalie ever, while you will be known as a loud mouth who played for the most overrated team in the nhl---the rangers...by the way , i live in ny!!!

I guess that is why Detroit is known as HockeyTown.... More cups then any american based team, Most wins in the NHL since 92 then ANY other team regular season and Playoffs, 17 straigh playoff appearances(most out of any major sport) I could keep going........... But really now isnt there something better they could have posted then this? Why even post this article?

NBC…….sheesh, they should be committed, because they are sure not committed to hockey. America’s team? Get real !! I moved from the Detroit area to Alabama a few years back. The first Holloween I dressed up in my hockey gear, skates, stick, and all, to pass out candy. They thought I was a football player. Oh yeah, all America is gaga over the Wings. For hockey fans, nothing compares to CBC. Ron MacLean, Don Cherry, Kelly Hrudey, the “Hot Stove League”. If you can, get the CBC feed, by all means, do it. Ron MacLean is a great ambassador for Canada, and hockey.
%$#& NBC. Where are they the rest of the year? Also, go to TSN.ca , Canada’s version of ESPN, only better, hockey wise.
Go Wings, I gotcha covered here in Alabama.

Very well put James M... I use the get CBC and loved their coverage.. NOBODY was better. NBC & VS they really stink... Hockey coverage here has been terrible since ESPN did not pick them up after the lockout and even then They were not that great but definately better then what we have to deal with now....

Okay, I don't watch football, so I'm guessing the Dallas Cowboys are a bad football team? Maybe the Wings should be like the Chicago Cubs of the NHL... Anyways, I'm glad to see the Wings this far in the playoffs. It's gonna be a good game tomorrow. Go Wings and good luck Stars.

To quote Mickey, I autta give ya "a B.C. twohander" Yeah, I do miis Ken & Mickey. I do get to see them during the regular season, on Center Ice. Center Ice has limited coverage (very limited) for the first two rounds of the playoffs, and none after that. So, I'm happy that I at least have VS.
