Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Dan Wood of Ducks Blog writes a rather compelling defense of Chris Pronger(notes) both as a player and an individual: "Booed mercilessly in nearly every NHL arena except his own, Pronger is perhaps the league's most misunderstood individual." We'd agree that Pronger isn't "nothing but evil" as Wood writes as a devil's advocate. We will say that he's an Ulf-level cheap shot artist, and that behavior has tarnished what otherwise could be (should be?) a Hall of Fame career. [Ducks Blog]

Mikael Samuelsson(notes), Tomas Kopecky(notes), Ty Conklin(notes) and Marian Hossa(notes): Soon-to-be former Detroit Red Wings? [Snapshots]

• Gotta love the negotiating prowess of New York Rangers GM Glen Sather, who said this about Nik Antropov's(notes) agent seeking a long-term deal at $5 million per season: "There's a snowball's chance in hell that's going to happen. It's ridiculous. I hate to criticize an agent, but let's have a little bit of reality here." [NY Post]

• Our content partners at SB Nation unleash the awesome power of their fully armed and operational battle station with a catchall Free Agent Frenzy blog. Bookmark it, Dan-o. [SB Nation]

• NHL.com, meanwhile, attempts a ranking of the top 50 free agents heading into this week's frenzy. We're pretty sure Rob Scuderi(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins might garner a tad more interest than Jordan Leopold(notes). [NHL.com]

Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is "disappointed" that Dany Heatley(notes) has requested a trade. And if there's anyone who knows about disappointment ... [Sun Media]

• Why it's time for Joe Sakic(notes) to say goodbye to the NHL. [Denver Post]

• "Fanarchy" on Versus was pimped hard during the network's Stanley Cup coverage. To the surprise of exactly no one, there's a backlash now that it's on the air. From First Cuts: "Sports bloggers of the blogosphere: This is not progress. Rather than having your voice taken seriously, you're being sold as mouthbreathing knuckledraggers when you're paired next to stuff like this. The show is actually the opposite of progress when it comes to giving fans a voice." [First Cuts]

• Wondering where the 2010 NHL Draft should be held, as it's never visited places like Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. The Bell Centre fans were vocal; can you imagine the draft in Philly or NYC? Maybe that's why it's never been there ... [From The Rink]

• SI's Allan Muir offers his winners and losers for the 2009 NHL Draft. All due respect, but after seeing his mock draft, how much of this analysis can we really depend on? Evander Kane dropping to the Leafs? That's bizonkers. [SI]

• Long, detailed look at the recent rulings and news in the Phoenix Coyotes' plight. [Sharkspage]

• Honestly, we could look at these train-wreck rookie glamour shots all day. "Now, Rangers draftee Scott Stajcer ... what we want you to do is squat in the goal like Jorge Posada and give us a look that says 'you better not be hitting on my sister, dude' ..." We have a Photo Expedition of the Draft later today. [Getty]

• Great job by Japers' Rink in tabulating over 16,000 votes on Washington Capitals players for final ratings on their 2008-09 seasons. Donald Brashear(notes) is thanking his lucky stars for Chris Clark(notes) and Michael Nylander(notes). [Japers]

• What we learned about the St. Louis Blues during the NHL Draft. They're a very interesting team to watch this summer, because the Blues are poised to contend and that could lead to hasty veteran additions. Also, because golf carts have attacked their defensemen on at least one occasion. [St. Louis Game Time]

New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello shoots down Internet reports that Johnny Oduya(notes) has re-signed for over $3 million per season. For the record, every person we discussed the Devils with at the Draft claimed that Jacques Lemaire will be their next coach. [Fire & Ice]

• USA Hockey today named New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella and New York Islanders head coach Scott Gordon as assistant coaches to Ron Wilson for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Wow, congrats to Gordon; that's a hell of an honor. [NHL]

• The notion of Jay Bouwmeester(notes) getting his traded to the Calgary Flames and then signing with the Edmonton Oilers is all kinds of awesome. [Sun Media]

• With his former GM and former goalie coach Francois Allaire already there, does the fact that Jean-Sebastian Giguere would accept a trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs mean his hefty price tag could be headed there? [Sun Media]

• The full Brian Burke media scrum from the NHL Draft, including what to do with the goaltending situation. [PPP]

• Finally, Sarah Spain interviews Carrie Milbank. In other news, a mass suicide of hockey bloggers with smiles on their faces was recently reported ...

I liked Antro the Giant on the Rangers...I hope we can sign him again but not at what he's asking. I guess we got Boyle from LA or something? Two big forwards would be nice for a change...

Mr Sather..Maybe the agent for Antropov saw all your previous stupid contracts you handed out to players like Redden, Drury, Gomez, Roszival and Naslund...and thought you were still with pipe!!

St. Louis is going to be next years Blackhawks. That Central Division will be a nasty fight even with the bottom Predators not challenging for a playoff spot. I wouldn't really be surprised if the Wings have a mediocre year against all of those teams and come in third in that division. Not a prediction just an observation.

Seems like a steep price for Antropov, but at least he's asking the right GM. Only Sather would be stupid enough to pay that!

    Rob Scuderi.
Never has a guy with so little talent, so little accomplishment, been in line to grab so much cake based on what, exactly? Boning off an (admittedly awesome) crease save in the Stanley Cup Finals.
But what some dope of a GM toss Jeff Finger money at him. It only takes one.

"Sports bloggers of the blogosphere: This is not progress. Rather than having your voice taken seriously, you're being sold as mouthbreathing knuckledraggers when you're paired next to stuff like this."
Really? I think someone is taking their opinion-venting on a website that is really only viewed by like-minded people a tad too seriously. It's not fact based, it's a web-log. To say this is a step backwards for the collected masses of bloggers is like saying the ESPY's is a step backwards for the legitimacy of Most Valuable Player. How about you just let people have fun while giving them their 15 minutes?
    ...Just my opinion.

I recently received an anonymous email from the parents of one of our sports bloggers complaining that their kids don't have time for vacation or video games because of always having to post comments on these boards and that it's just not fair to their summer vacation. This is what I have to say to them. This is DIVISION ONE blogging, people. We're part of the Yahoo experience. The big time. This isn't intramurals, brother! If you can't handle the responsibility of blogging regularly, perhaps you should consider intramural blogging.

    @ Garth,
Anyone who has watched Scuds play (and you obviously haven't) knows how clutch he really is. His shock blocking is worth 2M alone.
But you probably don't watch hockey, you just read blogs I'm sure. . .

the shaky camera work at the beginning of that video, along with the closeups on the girl's face makes it look like the beginning of an amateur adult video.

Antropov shouldn't even be getting paid the $3 mil he got. Aging, mediocre and a big body that plays like he's 5'8.
