Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Evening Puck Headlines and Previews: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• There are five games tonight, and they're going to have to be pretty damn good to top today's matinee between the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins. Boston scores three in the third for a 4-2 lead; the Blues rally with two goals in 1:19, as David Perron scored on the power play and David Backes tips in a rebound with 0.8 seconds left. St. Louis wins in the shootout. Check out the Backes goal at the 3:20 mark of this video. As you'll hear, this is what happens when Jack Edwards calls for a miracle.

• Goal or no goal? Stanley Cup of Chowder, a Bruins blog (duh), offers this fair assessment: "It appeared as though the puck was played with a high stick on Backes' game-tying goal, but it was definitely close. Since it was called a goal on the ice, conclusive evidence was needed to overturn the call and I'm not sure you could call that evidence conclusive, especially with the camera angles that were available." [SCoC]

• We really like what Bruins Blog is doing with video these days for The Boston Globe. Check out the great Kevin Paul Dupont on the controversial goal. [Globe]

• Meanwhile, Alexander Ovechkin scores twice including the game-winner in overtime to lead the Washington Capitals over the New York Islanders. But honestly, doesn't that pale in comparison with the next that he's on Twitter? [Twitter]

• Now that Claude Lemieux's back, here are nine other players one hopes to see return from retirement. If only we could have one more day together, Jeff Beukeboom. [Bangin Panger]

Preview: Dallas Stars at Tampa Bay Lightning (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: FSSW, SUN). For all the hype about Brad Richards's return to the Tampa, there's another rather important storyline to consider: How much better would Dallas be with Mike Smith between the pipes instead of Marty Turco this season?

Preview: Minnesota Wild at Chicago Blackhawks (8 p.m. EST; TV: VS). Your Versus game of the night means a link to the "Show Me Your V" gallery. Outside of the dog in the hockey sweater, we're pretty sure those are all stock images.

Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens says he's healthy and ready to start in this weekend's NHL All-Star Game. In a related story, Ryan Miller begins work on a crack about Carey Price's mother that will make "Yo Momma-Ween" look like a Hallmark card by comparison. [Sportsnet]

• Because Canada defeated Sweden in the world juniors finals, Daniel Alfredsson had to shovel out teammate Shean Donovan's backyard rink. And despite playing for the Ottawa Senators this season, it appears Alfredsson didn't tear his rotator cuff doing it. Small miracles. [Senators]

Preview: Carolina Hurricanes at Toronto Maple Leafs (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: RSN). Paul Maurice and the Cans visit Toronto, which expect to get Mike Van Ryn back in the lineup tonight. Meanwhile, Jason Blake admits he's finally having fun. Which is kind of nice to hear for a guy who's battled leukemia, been publically flogged for being overpaid and had to watch the Leafs implode over the last year.

Preview: New Jersey Devils at Nashville Predators (8 p.m. EST; TV: FSS). Wait ... a goaltending controversy on a Barry Trotz team? Surely can't be serious. (Waiting for the ZAZ retort in the comments in 3 ... 2 ...)

• On the one hand, Jay Pandolfo isn't having the best season for the New Jersey Devils. On the other, he didn't sign a three-year free-agent contract to be a healthy scratch for Brendan Shanahan. [Fire & Ice]

• Is the crappy economy catching up to travel hockey? [News 10]

• The New York Times profiles the late Don Sanderson, putting a human face on a tragedy with the clear (it would seem) intention to argue against fighting in the NHL. [NYT]

• Speaking shots to the head, Eric Lindros takes part in a panel discussion on concussions in hockey. [CBC Sports]

• Blog naval gazing alert: M.L. of the Islanders Opiner takes aim at the hockey media and hockey bloggers in the fallout of the recent B.D. Gallof situation. It's scattershot and scathing, and a really good, venomous read. [Islanders Opiner, via Kukla's]

Preview: Buffalo Sabres at Florida Panthers (7:30 p.m. EST; TV: MSG, FSFL). Defenseman Cory Murphy goes from the Panthers to the Lightning after getting claimed in waivers. Remember when players would be happy about that?

Finally, here's a rather strange video. This gentleman would like to offer his services to NHL teams, because he's got it all figured out. You see, 20 percent of the goals are scored in 80 percent of the net space. And 80 percent of the goals are scored in 20 percent of the net space. Or something like that. Anyhoo, Fantasy Hockey Scouts takes him to the woodshed. Watch this, and then read that.

I'm with Evan from Cup 'O Chowder on the Backes goal. It was way too close to tell if it was over the crossbar. Sucks for the B's, but at least they got a point. Nice move by Oshie during that shootout, too.

That angle is glorious for the play and its so bang, bang, could they really call it off.
Awesome ending though. Oshie's move was fantastic.

That picture of Messier with hair on his dome, a stubby in one hand, and Gary Coleman in the other is going to haunt me for weeks. +1.

The Bruins have nothing to complain about. They failed to protect a 4-2 lead with just minutes left to play. They took a stupid neutral-ice penalty that gave the Blues a 6 on 4. Chara and Savard had chances to fire the puck down the ice on the 6 on 4 but got too cute with it. Krejci had a wide open net from the circle and couldn't get it past Jackman. Instead of playing the full 60 minutes, they played 59:22, letting the Blues skate in with it, fire a shot, and let Backes stand at the side of the net where he was in a position to chop it in. Where was the D at that point? The Bruins deserved to lose that game.

If Islander Opiner is reading this: I like that picture of you from the yard at Sing Sing. How did you convince your cell mate to smuggle in the miniature camera? I hear that "prison favours" are expensive.
Do you miss the irony that you posted 2,500 words on your blog about the futility of blogging?
You peaked in high school. We get it. You nailed the head cheerleader. You were Big Man on Campus. And now
you're inmate No. 465787 at Joliet.
Meanwhile, the nerds are making 7 figures calling Islanders games.
But you'll always have your buddies. We've seen you. You walked around in those baggy grey sweats even though you weren't actually in gym class, coming from gym class, or going to gym class.
When you sat in the cafeteria, you all sit at the same table and called out to the other guys, "Hey Nerds!", "Look at the Nerds!" and "Nerds!" Wow. That must have been funny.
Was it the height of hilarity to pull a Nerd into the locker room and blackball him? Or was that just you and your pals acting our your H0m0er0tic fantasies?
When you're sitting around watching the Islanders and prepping for your drunk driving charge on the way home, do you lament the total lack of bench-clearing brawls in today's hockey? Do you miss the good old days when guys could slap their wives around a bit when they got out of hand? Or when "No" meant "I'm not drunk enough."
Frustrated non-jocks writing about sports might be weak, but high school jocks who think anybody still cares, remembers or wants to hear about their ribbons, letters and trophies is even weaker.

The B's were terrible today. A lot of people are hooting and hollering about the call. Whatever. It wasn't the goal at 19:59 of the third that killed them.
It is injuries. Missing Bergeron, Lucic, Kessel, Ward and Ference is a bit much.
Good thing some of them are coming back.

After watching that video, I now know where the NHL network got the idea for their "inspirational coach" Bumpers.
"If you flatline on the blueline you'll make headlines. And I ain't lying." How do you not love that guy.

what about the two bulls*&#t calls on the blues that set up the chance for the bruins to tie it up and then take the lead. martel made 2 of the worst calls i have seen in a while. the one on backes could definitely not been hooking, since he pushed with the gloves and not hook with the stick. good game either way. i love both of these teams and it was a lot closer than i thought it would be. nice highlights tonight.

I was at that game, and about 17500 people agreed with me on the one replay we got. Granted, we were a little biased, but it looked a hair above the crossbar. In the photo above, we look correct. Regardless, the Bruins played soft for the first 50 minutes of the game, then played lacksidaisical defense for the final 3. The Blues deserved to win the game, but they did not deserve to get that goal. You can't expect to win games by playing 7 minutes of stellar hockey, you have to close out games, and play 60 minutes of solid hockey (which the Blues did).
Looking back in a week or so, I'm sure I'll be more content in taking just the single point, rather that two. However, this looks like robbery in the most gut-wrenching kind.

Bad game today by the bruins, they always play bad in the afternoon, and it was capped of by a bad call by the Refs doing the replay of the last goal. The puck looked a couple inches over the crossbar of the goal when it was struck by the scorers stick. Also can somone tell me why Julien sends P.J. out for a penalty shot with the game on the line, ever since P.J. was drafted hes been a defensive forward. Yes, I know he has scored a game winner on a penalty shot however he has only one move, and there are others on the bench who are better scorers. Players like Ryder, Krecji, Kobasew, Savard, Thorton, Chara,Wideman,( Wheeler used#1). It drives me nuts when he is on the #1 line I'd rather have an off handed winger playing the left side than him he has no business on that line.

It was wayy too close to call, but the B's got the short end of that one. At least they got out with a point. Props to the Blues for an awesome comeback. It's sad seeing a franchise like that in the cellar.

I saw Thomas flip out too! that was great!
reminds me of the time last year he blew a shut out late in a game (but still won). he went apesh*t then as well and threw the cage into the boards.
he knew full well it was a legal goal.

I hear what your saying Daren L, and I agree. But what It all comes down to i think is PJ is a veteran player and Julien tends to rely on the veterans when it comes crunch time. After all the Bruins are still tied for best record in the league. All in all it was a good game on the Bruins end for 2 1/2 periods, they blew a two goal lead in the 3rd as someone pointed out on a previous post. Bruins are beat up right now due to a lot of injuries, but at least there not crumbling without their stars. Soon the team will be 95% (not 100% without Sturm) and back to their winnig ways. GO BRUINS #1

Ovie's on Twitter?? I'll have to bookmark that one. Doesn't matter your opinion of the Caps, the man is always good for confusing/terrifying/hilarious news. Between his blog, Roenick's, and the one that may potentially be Mike Commodore's on his Facebook fan page (but who would think he'd actually go back after this fall's fiasco) the possibilities are endless!

It would figure that a panel discussion on head injuries would lead with a video of Paul Kariya getting freight trained by Scott Stevens with his head down on the blueline during the '03 Stanley Cup Final and include participation by another 'casualty' of one of Stevens' notorious playoff bodychecks, Eric Lindros. Because I'm sure there isn't video footage of any recent hockey related concussions that occured within the past season or two to be had, especially ones that were caused by hits that were actually dirty as opposed to hard but legal open-ice hits. The Canadian media does know that Scott Stevens retired, like, five years ago, right? They need to get some new material and stop beating a horse that has long since died.

It amazes me... even when there is an almost perfect view of a puck being put in with a stick above the crossbar, even with replay officials, EVEN with the "war room" in Toronto... the NHL f*cks it up... nice job guys... job going... two big thumbs up...

You Boston apologists can piss and moan and cry all you want. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. But go get a look at the horrible call that the Blues suffered Saturday night vs. the Blackhawks and tell me today's goal wasn't a little bit of cosmic hockey karma. Huet's glove was completely inside the net, every replay showed it, and STILL the "war room" nitwits in Toronto could not get the call right. The Blues got jobbed out of 2 points Saturday night on a very questinable call, but played hard today and got the benefit of a questionable call. It happens.
