Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Afternoon and/or Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Barry Melrose signs a three-year deal to return to ESPN, because there's no better analyst than one who recently showed the game has passed him by. Steve Levy's erection still hasn't subsided since hearing the news. Can't wait for the first edition of the Barnaby-Melrose debates. Opening topic: Who gets air time on ESPNews at 1 a.m. on a Tuesday? [Going Five Hole]

• The roster for the Sean Avery meeting with the NHL today in New York. [NHL]

• Speaking of rosters, Avery is off the Dallas Stars' Web site roster. Figured that was a suspension formality until the Dallas PR staff told Sportsnet that it was a "technology issue." Writing, meet wall. [Stars]

• Darryl Sutter goes after the media for its coverage of the Avery situation. [Two-Line Pass]

We must bow to the Fox Sports poll on what Sean Avery should have said instead of "Sloppy Seconds." C'mon: "Slamming Home the Easy Rebound" is pretty much genius. [Sporting Blog]

• He's not the captain, he doesn't want to be the face of the franchise ... so columnist Mark Bradley believes that it's time the Atlanta Thrashers ship Ilya Kovalchuk out of town. That sound you just heard was 29 teams lining up with their rosters and checkbooks. [AJC]

• A fan is in the hospital after falling from the upper deck in Ottawa last night. [AP]

• EJ Hradek offers a strange list of coaches on the hot seat. Andy Murray has a mulligan this season, right? And didn't Paul Maurice just get hired? [ESPN]

• Was Daniel Briere rushed back from injury too quickly by the Philadelphia Flyers, causing him to suffer a "significant" groin injury and miss even more time? The Flyers would never have a player come back before he's ready (*cough*Lindros*cough*). [Philly.com]

• When Wayne Gretzky speaks, Canada listens. So will they back off the whole Phoenix Coyotes relocation thing after Gretzky's support of the team's fortunes? "It makes economic sense that teams can't continually lose money or you have to look for alternatives ... I can't speak for the teams in Florida or other teams, but our team isn't going anywhere." [Sun Media]

• Slowly but surely, Cory Schneider is learning what playing goal on the NHL level is like for the Vancouver Canucks. [CBC Sports]

• Attention people of Grand Rapids: Chris Chelios is on his way. [Red Wings]

• Is Guillaume Latendresse of the Montreal Canadiens on his last chance? "Anyone who played hockey as a youth knows every kids team has at least one ankle skater. He's the kid who doesn't pick his feet up when skating, but rather shuffles along the ice without ever taking a real stride. Latendresse is the NHL equivalent of an ankle skater. And if he doesn't pick it up, his spot in Montreal could be gone for good." [The Hockey News]

• There's a lot of inexperience and a lot of potential on the U.S. world juniors roster. [NHL]

Brian Rolston is back and skating with the New Jersey Devils, which would be much more exciting for the Devils if he were an all-star defenseman or goalie. [Fire & Ice]

• Pepper, you had us at "Patrick Division." [The Red Skate]

• Puck the Media has great news about U.S. local hockey ratings and some rough news out of Canada.

• Finally, it doesn't get any better than minor league hockey commercials:

Good think Danny didn't have a punctured lung!!! Paul Maurice is probably already on the hot seat... maybe Sean Avery should go to Atlanta, he could be the face and the mouth and the bad taste of the franchise

Lucky you don't play for an NHL team or your use of the term erection would have you suspended immediately.

Is it just me or does Barry seem to be eyeballing a large bowl of cheesefries while his friend points out, "that's the chilli... you slather that all over the cheesefries and then eat 'em... it's really quite delicious"

However, there is some good stuff nationally in Canada, where ratings are going up, and among key demographics.
As far as national TV, the numbers go this way: * Hockey Night in Canada, Game 1: 1.348 million viewers, up 13% * Hockey Night in Canada, Game 2: 763,000, up 19% * After Hours Post-Game: 281,000, up 53% * TSN: 496,000, up 21% * RDS: 773,000, up 21%
    so wheres the rough news?

From the NHL "Sean Avery arrived at the National Hockey League offices in midtown Manhattan at 10:50 this morning wearing a checkered gray suit with no tie and a pair of dark sunglasses." And it matters what he is wearing jsut because he "worked" at Vogue this summer??? They neglected to say the Phaneuf showed up wearing a shirt that reads "She's not sloppy"

Most NHL teams in Canada have pay tv games. I know they do out west and leafs tv has 20ish leaf games this year.
So i think people are just not willing to pay to watch a hockey game on tv..
I say go to a bar and watch the game with some birds:)

Bill Daly and Colin Campbell are both decent humans so they might outvote Bettman. It won't matter as Avery's biggest problem will be the Dallas MGNT.
ESPN loves them some sloppy seconds
EJ Hradek better worry about is own job. Although if he just cut that thing off his face he could be in two places at once. But how to decide which company gets that awfully unfunny puss filled tumor and which one gets the wart from his face.

Last year Bob Gainey was voted "NHL Executive of the Year". When I saw the article about Guillame Latendresse, I wondered why Gainey was voted Best anything? Lats is just one of many Gainey draft picks Montreal fans are disgusted with. Lapierre, Higgins, Plekanec, S Kostitsyn, O'Byrne, as well as free agent losers like Samaonov Brisebois, Kostopolous and Lang make Gainey the laughing stock of many Montrealers. When you take into consideration him giving away seriveable players such as Mike Rireiro, Garon, Huet, Theodore, Souray and Mark Streit, its a wonder Gainey has his job at all.

    Dreaming.
The Dallas Stars forward met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, Senior Executive Vice President Colin Campbell, League disciplinarian Marsellus Wallace, and an NHLPA representative. Stars co-General Manager Brett Hull will be in attendance as well, but he was not with Avery upon arrival at the NHL offices. Hull flew to New York on Wednesday.

Latendresse is another Bob Gainey failure, how that man still has his job in Montreal is beyond me. He drafted ..Chouinard, Higgins, Price, A Kostitsyn and Plekanec high in drafts...Gainey passed up, ..Gagne, Kopitar, Ryan Getzlaf, , Mike Richards and Anse Kopitar. Most fans agree Montreal hasnt had a dominant big man since Beliveau, and they havent had a decnet power foward since they foolishly traded John Leclair.

Gretz has strongly endorsed Bettman too. In fact, he has strongly endorsed about every piece of crap product out there. His genius is limited to on the ice, playing.

    @habs,
3 of the guys you mentioned are goalies. I thought the Habs had Jesus Price in net? Souray, Ribero, and Streit are good players who are all overpaid. Why should Gainey have overpaid to keep them, instead of trying out and playing younger, cheaper players?
Every team has free agent losers, and guys that got away, except probably the Red Wings(those bastards)

Didn't the Canadiens finish 1st in the East last year? And you want to fire the GM of that team after less than half of the next season?? Canadiens fans make me laugh more than any other in the league.

-Montreal (Games available nationally): 773,000 viewers per game, up 21%
    -RDS: 773,000, up 21%
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure RDS is not available nationally, so those numbers would be for the province of Québec only.

In defence of my team's TV ratings going down:
Because of the ludicrous scheduling, the Vancouver Canucks have played 25 games, and 8 of those have been weekday road games played outside of our time-zone.

@Mateo P - I live in Southern Ontario (Niagara), and get RDS (Channel 123 on Bell TV)...however, those numbers I'm sure are only for Quebec.
The interesting thing with RDS is that the games are never blacked-out. I supposedly live in Toronto's media market, and they regularly blackout English broadcasts of Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, but they always leave RDS alone...

@ 2-3 Habs Nerds that just posted.
As a Habs fan, I gotta say this. You guys are like 10 year olds. Be [profane] patient. Who cares what they passed up, every team passes up great players. I admit Latendresse is useless, i've been calling TheTenderness too tender and slow for any league's standards since day 1, that's cool, it happens. But that's what I hate about the Montreal passion, when they win a couple, they're f'n invincible. When they lose a few, everybody is to blame, fire Gainey Fire Carbo, everybody sucks. For christ's sake, no one presses the panic button faster than a jackass who diligently reads Le Journal de Montreal. We've won two in a row now, if we win tonight, watch the media go down on the Habs like a broke single-mom stripper on a NBA player.
grow up, for the sake of the rest of the sane Habs fans. I'd like to keep my respect and not be generalized as one of you guys when I talk to fans of the other teams.

@habs1rule: How are Lapierre, Higgins, Plekanec, and S. Kostitsyn bad draft picks? Explain yourself because to me they do not qualify as draft mistakes.
Brisebois is playing for peanuts, Kostopolous is an important player for the Habs, and Lang's was considered a good move by the fans. Gainey sent Rireiro away because the kid couldn't handle himself off the ice. Koivu even had to punch him in the face at one point. Garon, Huet, Theodore: are you retarded? You'd seriously build a team around any of those goalies? Souray and Streit: -28 and -6, ridiculous salaries... they are not missed.
