Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Evening Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• We'll leave it up to you to decide the news judgment for this story, but here goes: Sidney Crosby says he's happy with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and won't be joining LeBron James in New York. If LeBron signs with the Knicks in 2010. And if Crosby ever even reaches free agency. You know, in 2013. This story angle makes a lot of sense, because Crosby obviously can't get an endorsement deal playing in Pittsburgh (/sarcasm). This story was important enough to appear on SI.com, too. Wow. [Pittsburgh Tribune-Review]

• Holy smokes: Former NHL announcer Jiggs McDonald and "80 other Canadian citizens on a 30-day Asian tour are currently stranded in Bangkok due to the political unrest there." Shoulda been you, Jack Edwards. [On Frozen Pond]

Martin Brodeur, Rick DiPietro, Marc-Andre Fleury, Roberto Luongo, Manny Legace ... there have been more than a few goalies missing time this season. Former NHL goalie Glenn Healy has some theories why. [CBC Sports]

Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini gives Craig MacTavish and the coaching staff a vote of confidence. "If you've watched the practices the last five days, they worked extremely hard ... Sometimes, there's a fine line between being caught up in the pressure of the moment and trying to produce." And as David St. Hubbins once said, there's also a fine line between stupid and clever. [TSN]

• Who would win a yapping contest between Claude Lemieux and Sean Avery? [Dallas Stars Blog]

• "A judge has acquitted former junior 'A' hockey coach and NHL agent David Frost of sexual exploitation in relation to allegations that he participated in three-way sex with two of his former players and their ex-girlfriends." But boy, what a trial it was. [Ottawa Citizen]

• Ken Campbell believes that the official hiring of Brian Burke has also officially ended the notion that Toronto Maple Leafs ownership will meddle in hockey affairs. [Hockey News]

• Mirtle had a great pie-chart-tastic look at the demographic breakdowns of the NHL, and how the nationalities have shifted over the years. Finland is booming, yo. [From the Rink]

• The Barenaked Ladies have recorded a version of the old "Hockey Night in Canada" theme song. It will appear on TSN and RDS, and is being described as "intricate and textured." Like Norv Turner's face. [CP]

Luke Richardson has come to realize that his incredibly long playing career in the NHL has come to an end. Until, you know, Oren Koules inevitably comes calling. [Senators]

• Please do check out the latest blog vs. media relations mess involving our friend Wrap Around Curl and a CHL team's draconian and petty enforcement of photo rules. More on this over the weekend. [Wrap Around Curl]

• Finally, Steven Stamkos is rather proud of his first NHL fight. Gotta love any fight that begins with the announcer saying, "What is this!?" [Lightning Strikes]

I'm not a fan of his game either. But honestly why would you not want to swap out Drury or Gomez our double hit of mediocrity for one of the legit top 10 players in the world.
I didn't like Mario either... but I would have taken him in a heartbeat ( at least until the 3rd coming out of retirement ).

That's an interesting article on CBC about Goalies and injuries, but if someone is looking for sympathy. Look some where else.
I know some Guys that work just as hard as they do in construction and other fields, that don't make near the amount of money that these guys make.

@ Justin: Thank you for your whitty reparte.
@jcmbers: 1) he's gonna get creamed at the blue line one of thease days(al'la lindros) the way he carries the puck up the boards then accross the middle with his head down. 2) i cant stand the antics (diving & crying when bumped). 3)With Dubi, Zherdev, M. Staal, Girardi, Drury, Gomer, AND a elite Goalie, I'd rather have a team stacked with teir2 players then a team with one maxed out $$$$ player and a bunch of jabronies.

Rex. I wasnt a big fan of Jagr either. didnt want his head on a stick like some fans did last year but wasnt impressed with his work ethic either.
And dont make it sound like "I" took Jagr the team signed him I didnt. your argument is invalid

Besides all that. It's much more interesting to watch my team play against teams that have talent and have memories of battleing good teams and hating certain players.

you might not have signed him yourself, but no one held a gun to your head when you bought that "jagr" third jersey a couple years ago. and i'm sure your friends and family weren't suprised when you let your hair grow a little longer in the back as you tucked your shirt in only in the back. but that team of 2nd tier players got you realllll far in the playoffs last year. but what do i know? i root for a team with one maxed out player and a bunch of jabronies. oh, and a lesser known guy named malkin.

so that was you peeking out my a$$ when i bought that jagr jersey ,sorry i let you go later in the men's room but that tacobell i ate at the food court was knockin.
now it all make sense. your still pee'od about gettin your peepee slaped by the wings last year. well you'll cry if we did sign him and you'll cut us down if we dont want him. you cant have it both ways ya know.
by the way you described your man crush like obsession with every detail of the man you must have found a new home peeking out his arse after i let ya go. kudos to you sir.

    Rex,
Sounds like you speak from experience, about growing a mullet and tucking in only the back of your shirt. While you where your Mario Jersey and cheer a lesser known guy named Jaromir.

I'm sure we all know that Rangers fans would totally pass on the chance to have Crosby, arguably the best center in the league, suit up in their sweater in favour of guys like Chris Drury and Scott Gomez, who combined chew up about $14 million of cap space per season while following in the footsteps of pretty much every big free-agent signing in Rangers history by not performing up to expectations. Just like they wouldn't have taken Martin Brodeur from the Devils in a heartbeat had the netminder shown remotely any interest in fleeing across the Hudson for New York because they had so many other Stanley Cup and Vezina Trophy winning goalies already on their roster.
Rangers fans hate every good player they can't tempt with a fat contract in the franchise's ongoing and unsuccessful attempts to buy themselves a championship. Lundqvist is a top goalie, but if the Rangers' scoring problems continue despite the millions they already have sunk at the forward position his team will not win many playoff rounds, let alone Stanley Cups, over the next few seasons. Because, unfortunately for them, there is no skillz competition in the post-season.

Agreed. On his best nights, Jack Edwards is average. He's mediocre compared to Dale Arnold. Unfortunately for him, he's gained a santa-suit's worth of weight since his TV days, so he's not going back to NESN anytime soon.

The problem with being a Pittsturd fan is you can never get over yourselves and see your players short comings. i'll bash a ranger that sucks and i'll stand behind one that pours his heart out on that ice. where was the support for your team when they sucked a$$ after Mario's original contract nearly bankrupted them? you wernt so high and mighty then were ya? ya know where i was durring the 7 years the rangers blew and had every big money player in the league? in the 300's wereing my shirt proudly because i can find respect for the guys that play hard but maynot make the most $$$. if the rangers signed that dousche they'd make him the 1st $20mil player and have to give up all the young guys they've brought along the past few years, you know like the Pen's did last year to almost buy a cup with Hossa. Ya see we are sitting atop the East with a bunch of teir2 players and future star Sophmores and the Pittsturd Penguins are doing what they are doing with 2 Stars 1 Solid and an overrated goalie. whats amatter couldnt afford to bring back your core role players. they'll regret it in the playoffs. and by 2013 my young guys will be alot better hitting their prime and will stomp all over your 2 Maxed out sissy's

I really respect crosby's game as a fan of hockey because he's obviously a great talent.. But I've come to hate him because I AM a New York fan. BUT I would take him in a heartbeat over a second line center, gomez and a checking line center, drury who are both making 7 million each. It's ridiculous.

Love the redneck responses to someone's view: "Yes you would - I know what you're thinking and you're lying to yourself". We need more townies telling the top quartile how the world works.
