Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• No-Foil Stanley Cup replica contest winners later today. Reminder: Puck Daddy Rumors and Scuttlebutt chat at 1 p.m.!

• Eric McErlain lists three teams who are ready to rise up the standings in 2009-10: The New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues. At least two of those teams have goaltending. [Sporting News]

• TSN cranks up the hot-stove coverage with a free agent tracker as well as its all-free agent team for unrestricted players. Can't figure out if it's a down year or a potentially strong year for defensemen. [TSN]

• Nice work by Ryan Kennedy of THN: "Bolting a Stanley Cup champ for greener (as in the color of money) pastures is certainly a nice reward for a job well done, but it certainly hasn't helped the on-ice careers of those who have made the leap in the past." Matt Cullen(notes) of the Carolina Hurricanes is Patient Zero. [THN]

• NOOOO! Owners of the Iowa Chops, the greatest AHL team ever named after meat, want to relocate out of Des Moines. The loss of the team would be a serious financial blow to the city's arena. [Des Moines Register]

• Don Brennan on what Senators GM Bryan Murray could get for Dany Heatley(notes): "The sky might be the limit, depending on what Murray includes in a trade that includes his big bonus crybaby." [Sun Media]

• Facing a 60-percent season ticket renewal rate, the Ottawa Senators talk about building an off-season marketing campaign without Dany Heatley as a centerpiece. [The Province]

• The 'Jay Boumeester to the Detroit Red Wings' free-agent meme takes off. [Snapshots]

• Forbes: "Gretzky was the Great One on the ice. But as an owner it was clearly Lemieux." [Sports Money]

• A comprehensive list of the many NHL Awards parties in Las Vegas, including tonight when the "Anaheim Ducks will frolic with the bunnies at a private party at the Playboy Club." Finally, the proper venue for George Parros's(notes) mustache. [Las Vegas Sun]

• If the New York Islanders, for some reason, take defenseman Victor Hedman over forward John Tavares at No. 1 overall in the draft, all hell is going to break loose on the floor of Bell Centre -- especially for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria. [Bitter Leafs Fan]

• Defending Big D has epic coverage of the Dallas Stars' flirtation with goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, this offseason's Fabian-esque Unicorn at the Circus. [Defending Big D]

• Really nice piece by John McGourty of NHL.com about Canadian prospects and their desire to play in the NCAA: "With the rise in the number of American-born hockey players and a limited number of college scholarships, however, things have changed. While there still are a sizable number of Canadians playing NCAA hockey, the numbers are far fewer." [NHL]

• Red Fischer on the Balsillie/Phoenix Coyotes front, providing the rare Canadian voice to dance on the grave of the bid to relocate the Yotes to Canada: "It's all in the numbers. The Phoenix Coyotes aren't moving to Hamilton. Jim Balsillie's campaign to have the Coyotes relocated to Canada is toast. His Make it Seven campaign now can be called Keep it Six." [Gazette]

• NHL Network announces Stanley Cup Final replay for all-day Saturday; Pittsburgh braces for empty movie theaters and restaurants, higher-than-usual pizza and beer sales for the weekend. [NHL]

• We've said it for years: Guerin blows. [Getty]

• The assault trial about an ECHL "sucker punch" is turning rather nasty. [Canwest]

• Former Dallas Stars Coach Dave Tippett talks about his future and reminds the world that life can be peachy when you've got two years left on your contract. [Dallas Stars Blog]

• The fans raised $17,335 for the Detroit Red Wings Foundation during the 2009 Red Wings Beard-a-thon. Killer. [Red Wings]

Marian Hossa(notes) of the Wings defends Sidney Crosby(notes) for the post-series handshake flap. [Pensburgh]

• Friend of Puck Daddy Munkcy has a new Philadelphia Flyers blog: A Clockwork Orange (and Black).

• Stathead Nerd Alert! "A Theory on NHL Defenseman Metrics." [Phoenix Pub]

• Finally, and for the ladies (OK, and some gentlemen) in the Puck Daddy readership, the Top 5 Hottest Goalies. (Pussycat Dolls warning!) Two things: 1. Is there a Dimitri Pätzold cult we should be aware of? 2. Finally, a list Dan Cloutier(notes) can make that doesn't involve the word "bust."

If the Rangers screw up the draft: "Boiling lava, the dead rising from the grave!"... Great movie quote. "But if we're right, Lenny, then you will have saved the lives of millions of registered voters"

Please, let the handshake thing go.
As I said before, I'm sure Crosby is just as unhappy that he didn't get to shake the hands of all the Wings as they are that he missed them. I for one think Nick waited what he thought was an appropriate amount of time before leaving the ice. After all, the celebration belonged to the Penguins and he didn't want to take anything away from that. Congratulations to the Pens, their owners, coaches, staff and most of all their fans.
We'll see you again next year!!

AHL Iowa to relocate? Maybe Balsillie will buy them and move them to the Greater Toronto Area, although they already have three AHL franchises (Bulldogs, Marlies, and Maple Leafs).
There's no reason St. Louis should've been THAT bad early last year. If they can avoid another horrible start, there's now doubt they're probably a playoff team.

A hottest goalies video without Henrik Lundqvist is like the Bible without Jesus. MAF? Barf.

As long as the Wings lose Hossa and grab a defenseman this summer, I'll be happy. And does anyone else seriously doubt Lilja is coming back? The poor man's brain was bleeding for months and his headaches won't stop. Doesn't look good for him.
As for that video, in what universe is Roberto Luongo attractive? Must be a Canucks fan ... But any hottest goalies list is always invalidated by a lack of Henrik Lundqvist.

That Gazette guy is a little obsessed with the 3-strikes and your out metaphor on Balsillie. It's seems more to me like Balsille has just taken 3 shots on goal, knowing it usually takes more to finally bury one. I agree with Wysh in his earlier post. Balsillie isn't going away.
I think the Islanders will be a relocation candidate if they don't get an arena deal soon (dead last in attendance). I think the Predators may come back into play again as their renegotiated lease only holds them through 2012. And of course the Coyotes may be back in play if the city of Glendale decides to negotaite an easier out before a relocation auction rather than risk a court dismissing it all together. By the way these are the three lowest teams in the league attendance wise. I suspect within the next two seasons each of these teams will be brought up.
The one thing the court handed the NHL is the right to ask for relocation fees, this will be the next best way for Bettman to bribe the current owners (short of outright expansion fees), and still provide portability for struggling franchises.

I don't usually critique looks, but Roberto Luongo looks like Sacha Baron Cohen, and whenever I see Marc-Andre Fleury I think of when Tim Meadows was impersonating Tiger Woods and had a huge set of fake teeth.
Where's old King Henrik? My wife goes nuts for that guy.

Stars have no chance, Foppa is brainwashing Gustavsson to Colorado. I will so like him less if he succeed in that

Barring an unprecedented explosion from the youth that we're going to be forced to field, the Rangers aren't going to be moving up in the standings any time soon.

Not sure who picked the top 5 hot goalies, but if my wife saw that, she'd throw a fit, demanding to know why Brian Boucher was left off of the list.

In regards to the notes I am looking for big things from St Louis this year. That team has to get rid of some of the bloated, has-been veterans and just let those kids run wild. They need to add some veteran "character" players and they could be a pretty big obstacle for someone to over come next year. Rangers and Leafs are who they are and will be in the same position next year as well as the future.

By the way, the Chops need to move here to Baltimore. I'm tired of the Caps and Bears being the closest team.
