Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Jersey Fouls return tomorrow, but the usual rumors, scuttlebutt and innuendo chat will be postponed until Thursday. You've been warned.

• The Top 10 players who need a trade in order to turn their careers around. No. 1 is pretty obvious, given the reality of his surroundings. No. 2 is Nathan Horton(notes) of the Florida Panthers as "Horton's 40-goal potential will probably never be reached in Florida." Solid list, any omissions? [The Hockey Writers]

• Rory Boylen believes the NHL's most underrated player is Brent Seabrook(notes) of the Chicago Blackhawks. Of course, this high-profile recognition officially makes him "rated," so the search continues. [THN]

David Booth(notes) of the Panthers speaks after the controversial Mike Richards(notes) hit from earlier this week. He has bad headaches, can only watch TV for five minutes at a time and a black eye. Yowch. [On Frozen Pond]

• Is NHL Center Ice On Demand biased against Canadian franchises? [The View From The Booth]

• Christopher Botta has an outstanding piece today on FanHouse that allows former NHL linesman Pat Dapuzzo to reveal for the first time the effects from getting slashed in the face by Steve Downie's(notes) skate in 2008: "There were 10 fractures in my face. My right cheekbone was shattered. Between the accident and all the surgeries I've had, I lost all of my teeth. I lost my sense of smell. I developed sleep apnea. I dealt with terrible earaches caused by bone fragments in my right ear." It's harrowing, remarkable stuff. [FanHouse]

• The 2010 NHL Entry Draft is headed to Los Angeles and Staples Center, via Kyle Woodlief of the Red Line Report. Great: Just in time for the Kings to be out of the lottery. The timer between picks will be reset for two hours for each team to reflect the local vibe. [LA Kings Insider]

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby(notes) will help run the Olympic torch to the Vancouver 2010 games. It won't be too difficult, as the NHL has been carrying the torch for Sidney over the last several years. [CP]

• The Dallas Stars could face a change in ownership, but it appears that the market it attractive enough to keep the team from being the latest relocation darling for our neighbours to the nord. [Globe & Mail]

• Tributes are pouring in for Evan Frustaglio, a 13-year-old Mississauga North Stars player who died last week from the Swine Flu. [National Post]

Yan Stastny(notes) is recalled by the St. Louis Blues from the Peoria Rivermen. [Blues]

• The Atlanta Thrashers' loss is Jason Krog's(notes) gain, as he's recalled following Ilya Kovalchuk's(notes) injury. [Wolves]

"Paranoia, paranoia, everybody's coming to get me" ... a.k.a. the official anthem of the current NHLPA leadership. Strange days indeed for the players association. [Snapshot]

• Can general managers go on the disabled list? [Bruins Blog]

Anaheim Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle after losing to the Leafs via about 1,000,000 power plays: "Did the referees make as many mistakes as we did or did we make more mistakes than the officiating?  That's the way I always judge it. If you go through a hockey game and you can make less mistakes than the officials make in the game, then you usually have pretty good chance of winning." [Ducks Blog]

• Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy attend the NHL game between the Phoenix Coyotes and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden while Steve Levy of ESPN sucks his thumb on the left (kidding, we think.) As for subject of the photo: Yes, please. For Claire Danes. Not Hugh. Although ... [Rangers]

• CapsChick joins the Japers Rink mothership, and offers a take on secondary scoring. [Japers' Rink]

• Ted Leonsis : "Never blame the media for your troubles." [Ted's Take]

• The sale the Phoenix Coyotes to the NHL is inching along, but Wayne Gretzky is reportedly miffed his debts aren't being addressed. [Dreger]

Shane Doan(notes) said the dire predictions for the Coyotes and the summer in court to decide the team's fate "galvanized the room," leading to their fast start. [NHL]

• Man-crushing on Roberto Luongo(notes), Italian style. [Puck U video, some NSFW content]

• Finally, really cool look at player tattoos for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Steve Mason(notes) is pretty much the last guy you'd expect to have ink, right? Mike Commodore(notes) skin alert!

I'm a Thrashers fan, but Kovalchuk needs a trade to turn his career around. That list offered up Kari Lehtonen, but that would benefit the team more than Kari's career if a big return happens of it.
It all depends. If Kovalchuk thinks his franchise could turn around (which approximately 100% of the hockeyverse believes it won't), then he needs to stay. Otherwise, the man deserves a championship.

Great comment about Seabrook. As soon as someone is called underrated, they quickly become the exact opposite. These guys can never win! (Except when they are overrated and free agents....)

Why exactly does Kovalchuk deserve a championship? He has been in the league for what, eight seasons? What about guys who have busted their balls for 20+ years only to never win the Holy Grail? Kovalchuk will probably stay in ATL and be rewarded handsomely for it.

phenomenal interview with Pat Dapuzzo; I remember watching that game a couple seasons ago, and don't recall any mention at the time that his nose had been entirely sliced off.

Is that Carson Daly behind claire danes and Hugh Nobody-cares-when-your-next-to-claire-danes? Probably smiling because he thinks someone recognized him and is taking the picture of him.

Yeah I would say Kovalchuk needs to be on that list except for I think the point of the list is which players' careers would benefit, not necessarily win a cup. If not traded, Kovalchuk will be an 85-95 point player for another 4-6 years and will continue to make upwards of $6M a season, but he will not win a Cup. Smart thing for him (assuming another 90+ point season) would be to sign at high value with a competitive team next summer when his contract expires. He would still sign for over $7M a year (again, assuming a productive season this year) but he would also have a legitimate shot at winning the Cup, a chance he would not have if he continued and finished his career in Atlanta. Too much rebuilding to do there.

Yeah Wysh, that Crosby comment doesn't even make any sense - how could it possibly not be "too difficult" for Sid if the NHL has supposedly been doing it for him? According to that logic, he has no experience carrying it...

I can't wait until Mike Commodore is doing color commentary for some hockey network in 5-10 years. The guy is great on camera! Hopefully when the playoffs roll around, he'll grow his red afro out and call games w/ his headphones all buried in his hair...

$6m would be a pay cut from what Kovalchuk currently makes.
Why does Kovalchuk not deserve a cup? Did Crosby and Malkin NOT deserve a cup? Busting balls for 20+ years isn't any different from busting balls for 8, 7, 6, 2 years. The cup is awarded accordingly.

    RE: Jersey Fouls.
I was at a Ducks game over the weekend and saw the following (The picture is trapped in my camera with dead batteries); A mother with a 2007 fully autographed Ducks jersey, an older daughter with a partially autographed 2008-2009 jersey a younger daughter with a snazzy off color Ducks fakey jersey and a grumpy surly pouting teenage boy with an LA Kings Jersey. The Kings weren't playing. Does pissing off your parents get an exemption to the "team that isn't on the ice" foul rule? I was inclined to give the kid a pass, espescially considering it was for an in-state rival of your obviously crazy family. Any official rules interpritation?
