Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Rumors chat at 1 p.m. EST, with Spector and Dave Pagnotta. Here's myself and Pagnotta on a vid-cast for The Fourth Period talking about the Atlanta Thrashers after their loss to the Leafs in Toronto. [TFP, on right sidebar]

Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski(notes) has been suspended for two games for a forearm to the head of Andrew Ebbett(notes) of the Minnesota Wild (NHL video here). Now, why wasn't Duncan Keith(notes) nailed for his dangerous hit on Matt Cooke(notes)? Ebbett didn't go after Jovo like Cooke went after Keith, and Jovo has a bit more suspension history than Keith, too. So thinking like an NHL suit, that's why it went down like it did. [NHL]

• Speaking of the Minnesota Wild, they're 10-4-3 in the last 17 games. Mikko Koivu(notes)? He's got 18 points in his last 14 games. COINCIDENCE? We think not. [Star Tribune]

Semyon Varlamov(notes) is having lower body issues and is day-to-day, but there's still a chance he can play in the Centre of the Hockey Universe (tm, Toronto) on Saturday night to impress all the Calder voters. [Capitals Insider]

• The Syracuse Crunch, AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets, offer the "Tiger Woods Foursome" ticket package: "A four-pack of tickets to any of the Crunch's remaining December home games for just $60 (that's 8-under par).  The foursome package also includes a $100 gift certificate from Federico's Auto Body towards body work on a vehicle or a detailing package." Still waiting for the first "Tiger Woods Night" as some minor league arena ... [Crunch]

• Gallagher over at St. Louis Game Time has a one-sided conversation with St. Louis Blues Coach Andy Murray about how their relationship went from "chocolate sex money" to what he believes is the end of the line for his time in St. Louis. [St. Louis Game Time]

• Remember: Winter Classic Float Art Contest rolls on. Email entries to puckdaddyblog@yahoo.com

• We ... don't ... have ... words: Marty Brodeur is on a diet. According to his nutritionist, through glorious Babel Fish translation: "I killed the myth which it was necessary to eat of the pastes before a match." So there you go, New Jersey Devils fans: No Cup since 2003 because Marty was eating of the pastes. [Cyberpresse.ca, translated; stick tap to David D.]

Valtteri Filppula(notes) of the Detroit Red Wings is a cast-off. [Snapshots]

• Missing Robyn Regehr(notes) would not be a good thing for the Calgary Flames. No sir, it wouldn't. [Sun Media]

• Good piece on Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Dave King's journey back to the NHL and the fact that he's coaching players whose fathers he also coached. [NHL.com]

• It's not so much that Jason Botchford called the Vancouver Canucks a soft team in this article; it's that he dropped a MacGuffin reference when speaking about their power play, which is awesome. [Province]

• BREAKING: Mike Fisher's(notes) favorite Carrie Underwood song is "Temporary Home" on her album "Play On." [Senators]

• An ode to mascots, beginning in the Southeast Division. The Stanley C. Panther-as-Steve-Urkel observation is ... interesting. [Pens Universe]

• Dog scores hockey goal with mini-hockey stick? Sure, when the "puck" is already over the line. Hell, Derek Boogaard(notes) could pot one with that setup. [YouTube]

• Our Really Off The Record segment on TSN's "Off The Record" about Team Canada goalies. [TSN, podcast]

• Razor on the Dallas Stars' collapse against the Anaheim Ducks last night: "Getting outshot 23-4, and outscored 4-0 over the final 25 minutes of play without having to kill any penalties doesn't reflect well on all involved - young players, veteran players, leaders, followers, and coaches included." [Razor With An Edge]

• Malkin To The Kings calls out Alexei Kovalev and Jason Spezza(notes) for their lack of offense for the Ottawa Senators. The Sens have 18 power-play goals this season, third-lowest total in the league. [Off The Posts]

• Speaking of awful PP's, the assault on Penguins assistant coach/power play "specialist" Mike Yeo continues from Pittsburgh fans, despite the team getting his back. [The Confluence]

• Puck Stops Here believes that Travis Zajac(notes) of the New Jersey Devils is your favorite for the Selke this season. One slight correction: He's only leading the Devils in shorthanded time for forwards (2:05) if you discount Rod Niedermayer (2:29) and Jay Pandolfo(notes) (2:23) due to injury. He's not going to lead the team in that category at the end of the season. [TPSH]

• Mr. Plank has your San Jose Sharks/Los Angeles Kings preview. [Fear The Fin]

• Should the Chicago Blackhawks be concerned with their goal scoring? [Paint It Blackhawks]

• Finally, a clip that's important for three reasons: 1. To celebrate band geeks everywhere as the season of out-of-tune holiday concerts is upon us; 2. Because of the kid with the helmet playing the sax; 3. As a reminder that the "Hockey Night in Canada" theme is stirring no matter who's playing it.
