Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• First off, breaking news from TSN: The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Jordan Staal to a four-year, $16 million contract extension. Good news or bad news for Pens fans? [TSN]

• Our buddy Haggs in Boston told us last night that he thought Phil Kessel was getting into the NHL All-Star Game as an Eastern Conference reserve but that goalie Tim Thomas would not, by virtue of the fact that he split time with Manny Fernandez. The reserves have been announced, and Kessel's been screwed (thanks Kovalev and Habs vote-bots). Then again, so were Mike Richards and Mike Green and Patrik Elias and probably Ryan Miller. But hey, at least the Islanders and Senators are represented.

• The all-star reserves in the East are the Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin, Tampa Bay Lightning's Vincent Lecavalier, Carolina Hurricanes' Eric Staal, Buffalo Sabres' Thomas Vanek, Boston Bruins' Marc Savard, New Jersey Devils' Zach Parise, Ottawa Senators' Dany Heatley, Atlanta Thrashers' Ilya Kovalchuk and Philadelphia Flyers' Jeff Carter up front; the Florida Panthers' Jay Bouwmeester, Boston's Zdeno Chara, the New York Islanders' Mark Streit, and Toronto Maple Leafs' Tomas Kaberle on defense; Thomas and the New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist in goal. [NHL]

Milan Lucic is out with an undisclosed injury. Because he's on our fantasy team. [Bruins Blog]

• Why are the Chicago Blackhawks honoring Bob Probert, who's best known for wearing a Detroit Red Wings uniform and, you know, kicking the crap out of Chicago Blackhawks? [Daily Herald, via Kukla]

• The NY Daily News thinks very, very, very highly about its New York Rangers live blog chat. Barack who? [Sports Hernia]

• From the economy to the timing to the fact that the Atlanta Thrashers are "a ship that's had a great deal of trouble sailing out of the harbor," Adam Proteau explains why Don Waddell can't waste time in trading Ilya Kovalchuk. [Hockey News]

• JP has a terrific look at "the elephant in the room that is CapsNation," which is "the question of how to keep Karl Alzner on the roster if once the team finally got healthy." The rest of the Southeast wishes they had those problems. [Japers' Rink]

• Damien Cox on the Edmonton Oilers fans booing Mats Sundin last night: "As one onlooker suggested, it just proved there are Leaf fans everywhere. Another suggested that blue-collar Oiler fans were offended by the months of indecision from Sundin that only ended when he signed his rich deal with Vancouver on Dec. 18. At any rate, the negative reaction faded as the night wore on. Sundin as villain, after all, doesn't exactly have a lot of legs." [Toronto Star]

• Dennis Kane provides the most complete and compressive summary of Sundin's return to the NHL. </sarcasm> [Dennis Kane]

• After his stint in the Verizon Center urinals, Danny Briere is about ready to return to the lineup for the Philadelphia Flyers. Which means the team needs to clear cap space; which means moves ranging from the waiving of Lasse Kukkonen or Andrew Alberts to potentially trading Glen Metropolit. [DelCo Times]

• Interesting factoid from Razor down in Dallas, as the Stars get ready to face the Detroit Red Wings: "The Red Wings own the best faceoff percentage and powerplay percentage in the league. Do you think there is a correlation?" Indeed. [Razor With an Edge]

• Hush has some reflections on Canada's fifth straight world junior championship: "Imagine being a 17-year-old kid and having some reporter tell you that the ‘hopes of the nation' rest upon you and 21 other zit-faced teenagers. It's exciting, but probably more nerve-wracking than anything, especially with the tournament on home ice." [Penguins Connect]

Colin White is back in the lineup for the New Jersey Devils tonight against Atlanta. [Fire & Ice]

• 2K Sports is slashing $10 off the price of NHL 2K9. It's fun on the Wii, we'll say that. [First Cuts]

• For the stat-heads today: Mirtle presents a list of "high-event players," in the sense that they're on the ice when goals are scored for or against. By that measurement, Alexei Ponikarovsky of the Toronto Maple Leafs is the most exciting player in the NHL. [From the Rink]

• James Duthie presents a rather inspired "reading between the lines" of Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk's underwhelming "vote of confidence" for his coach and GM. [Ottawa Citizen]

• Finally, via Waiting for Stanley, it's the Vancouver Canucks' Pavol Demitra interview remix. What, no Master P "Make'em Say 'Uh'"?

Bad deal for Pens. Don't get me wrong, Staal is a great 3rd line center, but he's not $4M-a-year great. Shero's getting ripped off here. Jordan Staal is worth half this deal at the most.

They just signed our biggest trading chip. He's no Eric, but we'll hope he's at least going to be better than he's shown the last 18 months.

Uuuughh, too much money for Staal. Should have got 2.5-3 mil annually tops. Trade rumors should go away a bit though eh?

Three bruins and Kessel's not one of them? Never mind the Habs, Kessel was robbed by Thomas. So was Backstrom.

There are indeed a lot of transplanted Leafs fans in Alberta, but I suspect the guy's indecision/flakiness is a bigger factor behind the boos, and the fact that any self-respecting Albertan hates the stupid Canucks (myself included). Thanks for the Demitra video, BTW ... Slow news day?

Sounds like a sign and trade move to me on that. Perhaps the pens think they will get more value if the team has him locked into the contract (even at $4 mill per year, ouch). There's another move not too far away here.

    @Huet's seen nuthin' yet
I agree - Kessel has to be on the team. I also think that Philly got robbed without Mike Richards on the team.
There is no way that Streit deserves to be on the team - once again I'll not be watching the All-Star Game - just the skills competition (and hopefully without the fancy breakaway contest).

Staal must be polishing Sidney's and Mario's knob pretty hard to get that coin...next thing you know, George Parros will be making $850,000 a season....

Streit is a far better pick than any Islander, imo.
Given the travesty that was the fan voting, the league messed up the East worse than the West. Bouwmeester? I'd have gone with Anderson. Vanek? I'd have taken Miller.
Richards and Gagne were both robbed, but that was a certainty a few days ago. Given the constraints (only two spots open for second-best-on-his-team guys, picking three Bruins seems as bad as three Ducks.

League is up and running you will take over the team. It is a keeper league. You will need to stay active. We have created a message board for trades and drafts. You will need to sign up for it. I can not stress enough that you stay active on the board.
Only 1 open will take the best owner. Key players on the roster are Malkin and Nash.
Please leave your email if you are interested.

@Roger H - I agree, unless Lowe has made a back-room deal and Sam Gagner is heading to Pittsburgh as we speak....or maybe Garth Snow has a bag of Charles Wang's cash heading to Mario in an attempt to sign all 4 Staal brothers by 2010....

Id rather have a winger whose under contract to trade than a winger whos not under contract to trade. Contracts and money make the NHLWorld go round.

How can one of the best two-way players in the league get snubbed for the all-star game in MTL? No Richards in the line-up but Kovalev is there? What a joke!!!!

What an injustice! Kessel should have been picked, not Lecavalier and I am a Bolts fan. Hopefully, we will get to see Chara vas. Souray in the fastest shot contest.

*pours* some out for the demise of a Crosby-Malkin-Ovechkin starting ASG line, what would've been the most awesomely awesome and awesomely awkward ASG line ever.

Well, Staal's entry level deal comes in around $2 mil against the cap, so at 4, thats only another $2 mil, but still gona make it tough to sign quality wingers for all these centers.

If the NHL really wants to do allstar voting, maybe they should wait until 25 games have been played so craptacular players like Giguere aren't even on the ballot. That way it would allow hab fans to lestuff the box while still making sure that some great players aren't snubbed for any other reason than an overflow of talent in their position.

And yes, simple solution to the snubs, take away the one player per team rule, and take away the fan voting for starters.....that way Mark Streit and Komisarek don't make an all-star team and guys like Kessel, Richards, Green do.
