Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• News that Henrik and Daniel Sedin could be seeking upwards of $7 million apiece this summer continues to reverberate through the hockey world. Spector believes the number is closer to "$6.5 million each, while Canucks GM Mike Gillis is thought to be offering $5.5 million apiece." He also thinks Brian Burke could make a pitch to bring the twins to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, from Steven Ovadia: "I don't begrudge anyone their money, but what team can afford $14 million for two players? Someone needs to explain the salary cap system to the twins. Unless they're no longer that into playing with each other." Poppycock -- no one splits up the Swedish Wonder Twins. Form of ... complete overcompensation for complementary players! Shape of ... a higher annual salary than Roberto Luongo! [Puck Update and THN]

• The Hershey Bears unleash their latest specialty jersey: The St. Patrick's Day sweater, complete with pots 'o gold and prancing leprechauns. It's enough to make one nostalgic for Valentine's Day. [Bangin Panger]

Marc Savard's relationship with his stick makes Tyler Kennedy's seem like a random hookup at a nightclub. [Stanley Cup of Chowder]

Alexander Ovechkin believes God wants him to score his 50th goal in Atlanta tonight. Which just proves our theory that God hates the Thrashers. [Japers, via Alex Ovetjkin]

• Inspired by the NBA stars in the Summer Games, NHL players want to join the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Here's the rub: It may be up to each individual team to decide whether or not to allow their players will participate. Marty Brodeur shouldn't start carrying a practice torch just yet. [Sports Business Journal]

• Speaking of the New Jersey Devils goalie, Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News believes that if and when Brodeur sets new standards for most regular season career wins and most career shutouts, "he will make those marks untouchable." Which is to say that Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News believes there will never be another decade-long defensive era with a team that has 15 years of nearly uninterrupted success. Ask Terry Sawchuk about unbreakable records. Just don't expect a prompt response. [THN]

• NHL Network will have the Devils and the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, as Marty goes for the wins record. Steve Lepore writes that NHL Network will follow Brodeur until he breaks the mark. Hopefully he tanks until the final game of the season; sure, it'll hurt the Devils' playoff positioning, but it'll be the most national coverage the franchise has gotten since the 2003 finals. [Puck The Media]

• A stupid penalty is still a stupid penalty if you're the Calgary Flames. [Snapshots]

• The Tampa Bay Lightning have reassigned defenseman Josef Melichar to the AHL. The Lightning moving a defenseman on its roster? C'mon. [Lightning]

• Why did a half dozen people get sick at a Cleveland area hockey rink over the weekend? Why, it was a perfect storm of bad Zambonis, poor ventilation and team buses running too close to the arena. We still suspect jalapeño popper fumes. [Plain Dealer]

"AAAAAAAAAAAND STAY OUT!" [AP]

• The Lightning evidently have no use for John Tavares should they end up with the top pick in the draft. Which is code for "Lawton wants his Lindros trade." [St. Pete Times]

• The incredible comeback of defenseman Brian Pothier of the Washington Capitals could reach its happy ending in the next two games. [Capitals Insider]

• Razor looks at how James Neal and Fabian Brunnstrom have quietly produced big time for the Dallas Stars. [Razor With an Edge]

• Will the Edmonton Oilers keep the line of Ales Hemsky, Patrick O'Sullivan and Sam Gagner together? Better question: Can O'Sullivan succeed where Erik Cole and Dustin Penner failed, which is on Hemsky's line? [Sun Media]

• The battle between MSG and the NHL over the New York Rangers' Web site appears to be headed to a settlement. Hopefully the NHL got some free pretzels out of the deal. Simply wonderful after a Rangers game. Provided the homeless dudes don't snatch them from your hands. [Sports Business Journal, via Kukla]

• The Central Hockey League is accused of engaging in unfair labor practices. [Shreveport Times]

• Finally, the NHL presents a brief history of goal celebrations. Cool:

Have not the NYR overpaid two players OVER 14M for half the production. I say give it to them. The more the merrier in regards to clubs overpaying.

If somone pays those two $7 mil a piece, they will never field a competitive team (unless its the Canucks, and Luongo carries them on his back)

If I were afinogenov, I'd throw a kegger every time I wasn't a healthy scratch.

"Unless they're no longer that into playing with each other." Wouldn't you think they're past that stage by now? I mean, there's no way they're still taking baths together or anything...

I thought $7 million for the Sedins was a bit steep for players of their calibers, but then I remembered Ryan Malone's contract. I guess they have a pretty solid argument afterall!

It's wonderful to see the links in [brackets] again, instead of (parentheses). With all respect to Leahy, it's just not the same without you, Wysh.

BrettP: Crosby was mentioned *nowhere* except in the tags (which is only because Wysh is an idiot and uses that tag on any story about Ovechkin). God you people are obsessed.
