Here are your Afternoon Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

Sean Avery's hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will be on Thursday morning in New York. Brett Hull, the GM of the Dallas Stars, had a remarkable interview on Fan 590 in Toronto today about Avery's suspension. He said the "sloppy seconds" press event was stunning, and "for me to be flabbergasted, it's pretty good." He reiterated several times that it was Avery's staging of the event that was "crossing the line." He said Avery will issue an apology. But the biggest news is that while he was willing get Avery's back for his play in Dallas, he said he doesn't know if Avery will be welcomed back in the Stars locker room. [Fan 590, and thanks to PD reader Daniel]

• Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated believes that Hull's job could be in jeopardy because of Avery and not because he was an under-qualified celebrity in a suit that was hired to co-manage an NHL team. [SI]

• Pretty funny list from The 10 Spot on Avery's best excuses. If you don't love "still angry about ludicrous 24 plotline of Kim getting stuck in a bear trap while fleeing Johnny Drama" and "life has no purpose since absence of Martin Brodeur," there's no love in you. [Fan Nation]

• Obviously, this is a job for Jack Bauer. [A2Y]

• Is this actually a second offense by Sean Avery this season, even if it's the first of in front of the media? [Bruins Blog]

• The bottom line is that Avery had his "Hey, Hanrahan!" moment. [The Empty Netter]

• Say what you will about Sean Avery, but at least he wasn't photographed getting his groin cupped by another dude. No, that would be Derek Roy of the Buffalo Sabres. [My Safety is Harvard, via Deadspin]

• "Since 1986, the Red Wings have had only two players wear the coveted "C," and the two captains, first Yzerman for 19 seasons and now Lidstrom in his third, are quite alike, except if you forget they're from opposite ends of the Atlantic Ocean." Kudos to Dan Rosen on a terrific piece about Nicklas Lidstrom. [NHL.com]

• The New Jersey Devils recycle more previously-used numbers than The Killers do. [Fire & Ice]

• The San Jose Sharks have 43 points in 25 games, tying the 1943-44 Montreal Canadiens for the best start in NHL history. But is it fair to dismiss that because of the team's legacy of postseason failure? [Two for Elbowing]

• About 26 percent of all regular season games are going to overtime. Fodder for the "three points for a regulation win" crowd. [CBC Sports]

• The psychological wisdom of Detroit Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock. [Snapshots]

• Is a writer for the Boston Globe actually allowed to write a positive feature story on Claude Lemieux's comeback? "The results thus far, according to the old man who once wore Montreal's 'CH' on his chest, have been positive, encouraging, to the point he believes he can get back to the show within a matter of weeks." [Boston Globe]

• With the Vancouver Canucks playing good hockey, Ryan Kennedy pens a letter of apology to GM Mike Gillis. [The Hockey News]

• Any of you eggheads wanna how the brains of hockey players and fans are different than those who have yet to let the light of the Game into their hearts? "Experience doing an activity, such as playing hockey, may allow the brain to recruit areas that are usually devoted to skilled action to the task of comprehending speech, particularly when the words relate to the activity in question." [3quarksdaily]

• Finally, a very interesting feature on a game between Mississippi State Ice Hockey and Loyola University New Orleans, with fans and one crazy fight. Southern fried hockey fun!

Yep, you're the first. But only in this blog. I think this issue has been beaten to death. I mean, come on. You mean to tell me that the roughest sport in the world has been reduced to suspensions because of a comment? What would Brett Hull have said if Mike Madano had made that comment? Not that he ever wood, mind you, because we all have seen Mike Madano's wife, and we all know she's not a sloppy second, right?

I thought that "Life has no purpose since absence of Martin Brodeur" was your excuse... I'm kinda surprised that Semin wasn't suspended after his comments... there were a lot offended people who seemed to need therapy for the next 10 years

When Ray Emery said there was "nothing to do in Buffalo" in the 2007 playoffs, Derek Roy just proved him wrong...hell, a night in Buffalo would make me move to the KHL...

Avery deserved what he got. He's a member of the NHL and should not go out of his way to make embarrassing remarks that have nothing to do with hockey. He's also a repeat offender. Players get escalating punishment for breaking other rules and I think Avery should thank his lucky stars he's never been pegged for this before. The NHL isn't placing PR before physical injury, they're just finally washing themselves of the skid-mark of professional hockey.

The Sharks are rolling and playing some hell of an entertaining hockey. It's easy to call "choke" based on past performance, but it's a new attitude with a new coach. What the Sharks did to the Leafs shows the difference between how McClellan and Wilson influence the players and game. Post-season failure...absolutely something to overcome. Looks like SJ has made some great moves to do that.
    GO SHARKS!!

Just have to say this about the Avery comment - So What? What is the big deal? That's his style. He was instigating, that's what he does. He is one of the leagues biggest pests. He could have said a LOT worse then that. That is just a common everyday saying about a lot of things, sure there is innuendo in it. Who knows what the history between him and her is anyhow? Sure he sought out the camera to do it - again so what? Throw your opponent off their game. Really - what happened to free speech? She is his sloppy seconds after all. Bettman is a moron - everyone knows that. As for Hull, doesn't know if Avery will be welcomed back in the locker room? PUH-lease. If they don't hate the guy, they'll all be laughing and slapping him on the back. We are talking about a bunch of jocks. Sure there are some goody two shoes in the locker room but guys are guys if they admit it or not and he is just saying what a LOT of guys would want to say in the same place. It took a pair cast iron testicles to do it though.
I think he is getting unfairly raked over the coals in Dallas all season. Is there a personality conflict or two there? Put him on the top line or two and not only will he score he will drive the other team nuts. He is not Mr Shiny Image. I won't title him a goon - but certainly an instigator - and he's a pretty talented one.

Where was this alleged 'Dallas Star's Integrity' when Ed Belfour played?
I believe he offered a Dallas police officer 'one-billion dollars' to let him go after he drunkly hit a woman. No suspension for that....

I'm ticked now - why did my comment get blown away? Because I defended Avery? It certainly didn't violate the posting rules. Unless "sloppy" and "seconds" together is a "violation". What happened to free speech?

Not welcomed back on the STARZ after a classless and stupid comment that was insensitive but which doesn't touch one of the third rails-- race, religion, ethnicity? This is getting surreal. I hate Avery as much as anybody, but it's bizarre to see him get the same treatment from his team/sport that Plax Burress is getting, when their mea culpas couldn't be more different.
If verbal lack-of-tact is befitting this sort of treatment, it kinda makes you wonder how some of the sport's best quotes-- "Mickey Mouse organization" "garage league" "Have another donut, Koho"-- would be treated today.
