Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Evening Puck Headlines and Previews: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Yeah, so today happened. Due to that kookiness, we're postponing the Flickr'ing of the Create-a-Card contest until Tuesday, when it'll be up fo' realz. Thanks for the patience.

• The New York Rangers want John Tortorella to fulfill his NHL coaching destiny and come to MSG to yell at Larry Brooks take over the Rangers. Ah, but here's the thing: The Tampa Bay Lightning are holding things up because Torts is still under contract with the team, and the NHL is rumored to be getting involved in some mediation. [SILIVE]

• Let's say the new coach is, in fact, Tortorella. Dallas Stars Blog brings up an interesting point about former Star Sean Avery, now rehabbing his image with the AHL Hartford Wolfpack and almost certain to hit recall waivers before the trade deadline: Does Avery's future with the Rangers change with Torts behind the bench? Good question, because this was Tortorella's reaction to the "sloppy seconds" suspension: "He's embarrassed himself, he's embarrassed the organization, he's embarrassed the league and he's embarrassed his teammates, who have to look out for him. Send him home. He doesn't belong in the league." [Dallas Stars Blog]

• Wouldn't it be refreshing to hear someone just say, "Nice guy, but his line configurations were pretty much awful and his system choked the fun out of hockey?" Yeah, don't look to the Rangers for that. [NY Daily News]

• Ken Campbell of The Hockey News is in the "Blame Sather" camp: "But the fish rots from the head down and that's the case with the Rangers." True, but yuck. [THN]

• Memo to Mike Babcock, Andy Murray, Peter DeBoer and Joel Quenneville: You're all screwed next season. [More from The Fabulous Forum]

Chris Cooley Tanner Cooley loves him some Alexander Ovechkin. Sidney Crosby? Not so much. [Chris Cooley]

• "Violence in hockey is a public health issue that should not be left to hockey leagues to police themselves, said Kevin Wamsley, associate dean of health sciences at the University of Western Ontario." Great ... if it's a public healthy issue, then soon we won't be able to fight inside bars and restaurants, either. [Edmonton Journal]

• Bruce "Malkin To The Kings" Garrioch writes that the Montreal Canadiens are "studying" the availability of Ryan Smyth of the Avs, whatever the hell that means. [Sun Media]

• Bryan Murray ducks a trading Jason Spezza question by saying "He's our No. 1 centre" and "I'm not going to get into specific names" for the trade deadline. [CP]

Preview: San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars (8 p.m. EST; TV: VS, TSN2). The Sharks are looking for their seventh win in eight regular season visits to Dallas. Should the Dallas Stars expect Marty Turco to lead them to a playoff berth? [Defending Big D]

• The Anaheim Ducks are the latest team to freeze ticket prices for next season. [Ducks]

Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller is wearing a brace on his ankle when he walks but said the swelling has gone down on it. Still, the Pat Lalime Era appears ready to begin for the Sabres. [NHL.com]

Kurtis Foster is practicing, Andrew Brunette will be back in the lineup, but Owen Nolan has a cracked toe for the Minnesota Wild. Which we're guessing would be a "lower body injury." [Hockey Wilderness]

• Oh no! Jibblescribbits has us all figured out! Damn that "Brian Burke" Twitter [Jibblescribbits]

• Finally, Devin Setoguchi of the San Jose Sharks reveals the secret of his success, and it begins with his shuttlecock. [The Power Play]

All this Pitts - Wash rivalry needs now is for James Harrison to tell Cooley that he'll kick his teeth in for talking about Sidney like that.
I envy Washington and their stars. Cooley and Ovie are two of the coolest people in sports.

Tortorella's personality is that of the sergeant from "Full Metal Jacket". He likes to yell like a psychopath at his players during games and practices and the media in post game interviews. He's a completely disrespectful, condescending jack&ss who thinks he's always right and is intolerant of any disagreement. Add Sean Avery to the mix, stir and the Rangers circus is ready to be served to the New York media. This should be hella fun for everyone, but Rangers fans.

its funny hearing a devils fan say things about the Rangers when he really isn't very well informed, blogger status notwithstanding.
Sather is the one who ultimately makes the moves, but Sather is also well-known for his trust in his people. It was the coaches, after all, who decided bringing Shanahan back this season wouldn't be a good idea. Sather wanted him back, according to Shanahan's own words after he signed with NJ. But Sather listens to his people, and rather than alienating his coach by bringing in someone the coach didn't want, he abided by his coaches and did not re-sign Shanny. The not re-signing Shanny is obviously a mistake, but knowing how Sather operates his organization, he trusted the coaches, and let them make that decision, and now, rightfully, the coaches have been fired. Is Sather at fault? That is not easy to say because he did what his coaches wanted. To me, that is the sign of a stable organization, in as much as the GM listens to the coaches and tries to put them in position to succeed. Sather also does that with his scouting staff, allowing them to make decisions on players, because that is what scouts are for. By Sather allowing his people to make decisions, he shows his support for his people, and that is certainly a good thing. So, while Sather does sit at the top, he is not to blame for allowing his people to do their jobs. I do not blame Sather for this, because he did what any good organization would do, and that is support his people and listen to them.

Torts is official, Tampa doesn't need or get any compensation, and Sather thinks Torts can learn to love Avery the way he does. Seriously.

Just to clarify - TSN reported later that the Lightning didn't want compensation for Tortorella. He already had permission to take a job. But Steve Sullivan has a clause in his assistant coach contract that if Torts got another NHL head coaching job, he could leave to join him.
So the Koules-Aid Man and Chainsaw Charlie weren't being jerkwads. For once.

If Chris Cooley was as good at football as he is at talking trash then maybe the Washington Redskins would have actually made the playoffs and he wouldn't have spent this past Super Bowl Sunday watching Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Tomlin celebrate with the Vince Lombardi Trophy on his plasma screen television as he rocked back and forth on his couch muttering the words 'wait til next year' over and over again.
I am not a Pittsburgh Penguins fan but I am so sick of the anti-Crosby vitriol. Whatever happened to giving credit where credit is due? I mean, I think Wayne Gretzky is kind of an ass but that doesn't mean I'm incapable of acknowledging that he is probably the best forward ever to play in the NHL. Real hockey fans can appreciate an individual's talent regardless of whether the person plays for their hockey team or one of the league's twenty-nine other clubs. Whether you love him or hate him, whatever your reasons may be, it does not change the fact that Sidney Crosby is one of the best players in the NHL. He may never score as many goals as Wayne Gretzky or Alexander Ovechkin, but he is possibly the most skilled playmaking centre in the game today. That he ranks second in league scoring despite the fact that he lacks a legitimate scoring winger to play on a line with him is a testament to his offensive talent, as is the fact that he averages over a point per game in both regular season and playoff games. He also became the youngest player ever to captain his team all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, where the Penguins forced the series to six games before losing to the Detroit Red Wings, and in only the second playoff appearance of his career, he tied Henrik Zetterberg, who was awarded the Conn Smythe, for the most points scored in the '07-'08 post-season. Those are some pretty lofty achievements for a player who supposedly 'sucks'.
Whatever. My point is that while everyone has the right to his or her own opinion on certain players, devoting large amounts of time to profanity laden diatribes on what diving cry baby Sidney Crosby is or spending money on 'Crosby sucks' t-shirts and jerseys doesn't make him any less talented or take away from any of his accomplishments and what he will continue to accomplish. It actually only proves that you're a loser with no life.

Between Torts yelling at Brooks, being Gunnery Sgt. Hartman to his players, and his love of Avery who likely will be shoved down his throat because the fans want him back so bad, this should be a blast to watch that boat sink. Dont lie! Who else has popcorn in the microwave??

OK, Wysh, you and I need a heart-to-heart talk. Here's what you wrote:
"when it'll be up fo' realz"
First you steal my "The Truth Is Out There." In that same post where I called you out on it, I ended with my signature as: "The Truth Is Out There, For Realz"
I don't ask for anything more than a simple royalty check. Don't make me sic my dog, Eklund on you. He doesn't really have much bite, but he has an awful smell that sorta sticks on you.
