Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Interesting comments from New Jersey Devils Coach Brent Sutter, whose son Brandon Sutter was sent to the hospital by that vicious (but legal) open-ice check from Doug Weight. Sutter told the Star Tribune that when he played, "If a player got hit in the head, whether it was clean or dirty, you knew what was going to happen. It was going to be a long night for the guy who did the hitting. And the next time, it would be a long night." Not predicting anything, just sayin': The Devils' next game against the New York Islanders is on Jan. 17, 2009 Nov. 21. [Star Tribune]

• The team's lines are far from set and Chris Drury finally scored his first two goals of the season, but the New York Rangers are still five points better than anyone else in the NHL right now. Maybe they didn't need Jagr after all. [Slap Shot]

• Steven Ovadia believes Tampa Bay Lightning rookie Steven Stamkos is attempting to send secret messages through his online diary. "I think 'It was her first time down to Tampa and it was a good experience for her' really means 'I'm so sick of this bench. It hurts. People weren't meant to sit on something so hard for so long. I need a cushion.'" [Puck Update]

• Speaking of unmitigated rookie busts in the first part of the NHL season, Nikita Filatov has been returned to the AHL by the Columbus Blue Jackets. [Jackets]

• It's now official: Buffalo will be the host of the IIHF World Junior Championship tournament in 2010-11. Beer, wings and watching players you've never heard of. Wait, that's the Bills ... [THN]

Sergei Zubov is on the way back for the Dallas Stars, and that could be some reshuffling on the defense. [Heika]

• Really nice work by Mirtle breaking down the motivations for that new European league, getting some comments from an anonymous source who played briefly in the NHL. [Mirtle]

• This hysteria over Steve Yzerman potentially taking over a Canadian hockey franchise will have to wait for at least another year and a half as he operates Team Canada. Which basically means that the Ottawa Senators shouldn't fire Bryan Murray until after the 2010 games. [ESPN]

• Eddie Cahill, a.k.a. Jim Craig from "Miracle," took in the Detroit Red Wings/Los Angeles Kings game last night and was promptly signed to replace Jason LaBarbera as the Kings' starting goaltender. (Jokes ... LaBarbera's been OK, by Kings standards.) [Life in Hockeywood]

Rick Rypien will be sidelined indefinitely because of a sports hernia. Great, so this is the injury where teams choose not to just say "lower body?" Ouch. [CBC Sports]

• Stiles isn't pleased with the Fox Sports "Rinkside View" camera angle, and explains why in quite explicit terms. [Purple Crushed Velvet]

• There really is nothing better than a Pensblog takedown, and the boys have some hypocritical (and racially homogenous) dudes from the Oilers blogosphere in the crosshairs. [Pensblog]

• The Anaheim Ducks are offering two tickets to three games, a practice jersey and an autographed puck from a "randomly selected" player (hello, Jonas Hiller) starting at $123 bucks. Because it's almost Thanksgiving, you see. [Ducks]

• Finally, there's no sound here -- just former NHL goalie John Grahame giving up a goal from the red line in the KHL for Omsk. If you're going to do this, might as well be in a country where vodka costs about as much as a gallon of gas in Caracas.

I think John had been drinking vodka on that play. Surprised they haven't learn to go top shelf, glove side on him yet. But then he is 9-5 with 3 shutouts and a .916% and 2.15GAA so the vodka (and chicks) must be working for him.

Remember that Time Bryan Marchment took out Weight's knee? Remember what Weight did? He came back 10 minutes later and cross checked Marchment in the face. That's the good ol' days, when Players got people back themselves. Anyone find video of that btw? I haven't seen that in a while. I think it'd be pretty classless of Brent Sutter to send someone on the Devils after Weight for him taking a legal yet devastating hit on his son.

No chance Steve Yzerman ever leaves the Red Wings to GM another team.

    @Wysh
Are you suggesting the Brent Sutter is going to have his team (the Devils) go after Weight for something he did against another team because it was his son, or is the game you referenced the next time the Hurricanes play the Islanders and not the Devils?

I don't think Doug Weight has to worry about Brent Sutter sending someone after him for hitting his son when the Isles and Devils play. I think Brandon't mommy will beat Doug up with her purse before that.

Zubov back Saturday...that should help Turco get over that .850 sv %....hopefully. He's available in a couple of my fantasy leagues I guess I'll pick him up if I can figure out who I can release...any bets on whether he'll actually stay healthy?

I'm saying the next time Brent Sutter's team faces Doug Weight and the New York Islanders is in January. Nothing more, nothing less.

That LA/Detroit broadcast by FOX was sick, and Stiles is dead on. WTF is FOX trying to do? Blow my eyes out trying to keep up with the tracking of the camera controller who can't keep on the play? I'm not a Kings fan or a Wings fan; I just wanted to watch a hockey game. Good thing I have Center Ice and could flip to the Detroit feed because the LA feed was foul. Jesus, how do you follow the game? What's next? Is FOX going to track the game overhead like football? Hey, FOX...fix the cameras and cut out all the fancy crap.

But, what about the instigator rule? I mean, seriously, shouldn't they just do away with it for that game? It would be a war... a friggin war!

Wysh should should write a whole article on this BS how players can't accept they got hit legaly and must go get retribution. You should also include how players from the orginal 6 didn't need the bording call because they all knew NEVER to turn your back on an oncomimg player. I guess all the equipment makes them think they are indestuctible. Speaking of equipment notice how player equipment is now made of hard plastic and has metal supports. The old shoulder pads even in the mid 90's used to be constucted of the same material soccer shin gaurds are made of, not the ones of today a linebacker could use.

    Fair enough.
If someone from Brent Sutter's team goes out of his way to 'get' Doug Weight, that would be just completely wrong. When you coach an NHL team you put anything that happens outside of the realm of your team aside and do what is best for the organization that pays your salary. I know its hard to seperate work and family, but in professional sports, you don't have a choice.

Well, Well, Well... Are memories so short?... Nobody learns from the Bertuzzi/Crawford mistake? Revenge has no place (or meaning) after the game ends.... Otherwise someone's ending up in court, and the NHL gets another black eye.
After leaking on...err.. *to* the media, I'd keep the Devil boys in a tight line were I Coach Sutter...
It's just amazing the amount of cranial vacuum that exists in the NHL rules committee regarding the steadfast support they've given to the fight instigator rule. Doug Weight, I am certain had no intention of injuring Brandon Sutter.... However, Doug might've been a bit more careful had a Dave Shultz / Stu Grimson type been there sitting on the Devil's bench.

@ Riverdragon, I agree totally on the Bertuzzi comparison. The last thing the NHL needs right now is another reason for sports fans nationwide to hate on it. If Bettman had a pair, he would've never reinstated Bertuzzi after that attack. It's just criminal to me that the man is even allowed on the ice after that. He belongs behind bars.

Calling Filatov a bust is a bit premature. Hitchcock won't play him so they returned him to AHL so that he can play. With 3 rookies already playing, it would be a sign of the apocalypise if Hitch played a 4th rookie.

Yes the devils did win 3 cups......but i will say they will go down in history as the most LAME and BORING team to watch play during those years........(that neautral zone trap killed hockey.........not the strike) i love when i hear a devils fan brag about the devils rangers rivalry....c'mon now devils fans, most of them dont even know who Ken Daneyko is, or Chris Tererri.....kinda like how there werent any yankee fans till 96.....The point is, the devils-rangers rivallry will never have the intensity that is brewed even before an isles rangers pre season game!!
