Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Morning Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• The Vancouver Canucks lead the NHL with nine too many men on the ice penalties. Why? Coach Alain Vigneault claims that players on the bench can't tell whether it's Daniel or Henrik Sedin coming off for a change. He's joked about putting their names on the front of their helmets. Nah ... just quietly mark one with a pen like Michael Scott did with his date from the Japanese steak house on "The Office." [Vancouver Sun]

Alexander Ovechkin will be just happy to be there, but Washington Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau believes it's "dumb" that his star won't be a starter in the NHL All-Star Game. [Washington Times]

• Reassessing the Dallas Stars' two-headed GM monster and asking yet again: What is it, exactly, that Brett Hull does? [Dallas Stars Blog]

• Michel Therrien has lost the room, Sidney Crosby is miserable and has no wingers to play with ... Steven Ovadia isn't exactly bringing the sunshine about the Pittsburgh Penguins today. [Puck Update]

• Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports that the Columbus Blue Jackets are going to aggressively enter the trade market for a center and offers plenty of red meat: Antoine Vermette, Doug Weight, and Jordan Staal, whom he writes is miserable playing for Therrien. [Dispatch]

• Speaking of Weight, this line actually made the cut in an article for Newsday: "One local reporter said Oilers message boards have been alive with talk of a possible return by Weight to Edmonton." [Newsday]

• The top 10 reasons to watch hockey, and all of them have breasts. [Head of Fred, via Busted Coverage]

Pavel Datsyuk and his Detroit Red Wings teammates discuss his awesome skills competition goal against the Minnesota Wild. Which Dats has decided to name "goal." [Snapshots]

• Regarding the Boston Bruins, Kevin Paul Dupont asks this of GM Peter Chiarelli: "Is the time at hand for the third-year general manager, with what amounts to $8.25 million in shopping money, to dress up his roster by adding a veteran free agent for what appears to be a legitimate run at a Cup?" [Boston Globe]

Jason Pominville of the Buffalo Sabres discusses his love of blogging, which includes working with an assistant and her loose-leaf notebook of ideas and information. Judging from the screen cap below, we formally challenge Pomer to a blog-off. "Thinki" about it, won't you? [Sabres video]

• The Nashville Predators have recalled Ryan Jones from the Milwaukee Admirals, and The Forechecker is optimistic that this stint could be a productive one. [On the Forecheck]

• Arguing why Bryan McCabe should not be booed upon his return to face the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight: "Do me a solid and save your wrath. McCabe doesn't deserve it. Even during his darkest days in a Leafs uniform, no one could accuse #24 of not playing with passion, or not trying. By all accounts, McCabe tried too much; tried too hard. He wanted nothing more than to live up to the massive contract John Ferguson Jr., aka the Antichrist, gave him, and his career in Toronto ended because of that desire and what it did to his game." [Sports and the City]

• Battle of California will be rinkside tonight for the Los Angeles Kings/Anaheim Ducks showdown. Which is a game that, incredibly, features two teams separated by just seven points. [BoC]

• Due to a dispute over allowing national sports federations to use their logos on Olympic jerseys, the Hockey Canada logo may not be worn at the Winter Games in Vancouver. Sweden's logo, featuring a goalie flopping like a beached salmon, will still be allowed. [NHL]

• Finally, a look back at Canada's run to the gold in world juniors. Even if it involves seeing the U.S.'s crushing disappointment one more time.

On the NEWSDAY story about "Weight Returning To Edmonton" - don't the girls in Edmonton already have enough weight?
If VERSUS was available in Edmonton, the fans there would easily win the "Show me your VD" contest...

The only useful piece of information I've gotten from Pommer's blog is the fact that Tim Connolly once dressed as Chris Drury in a little league outfit for Halloween. Oh, and that he trusts the Sabres' system like it's his lord and savior.

    @ Jay
I heard that Connolly took a swing with the bat and the wind resistance he felt from the swing caused him to go on IR. He must be Gaborik's cousin or somthing.

Malkin and Crosby should have taken less to keep the others.....so I ask - Is the game they play about $ or a damn cup?.......I'd sacrafice 1.5M to keep a few extra pieces.....getting your name on that cup is the damn goal.....ever wonder why ya get up at 5am and skate until 8, go to school until 1, and skate the rst of the day for the better part of 15 years.....
hell, even at the adult "beer-league" level the ultimate quest is that damn t-shirt or trophy (if on is provided)...or in tournaments it's all about f-in winning it all.....

Both Malkin and Crosby took 1.3M less than they could have (Malkin's extension doesn't kick in until next year)...

@ sleza - Daniel is the one with the neatly trimmed goatee.
C'mon guys, really? Couldn't one of you opt for the Dustin Hermanson and the other go with the Rollie Fingers?
Btw, what is Vigneault and the entire crowd watching, while the twins wait for the replay of their botched scoring chance?

It's obvious why Sid chose the figure he did. Shouldn't Malkin have settled for $7.1M, or at least $8.6M?

This is of course an issue we have all but beat to death thus far, but it is horrifically moronic that the top scoring line for the East is not Crosby/Malkin/Ovechkin. There's a player on that line that arguably doesn't even deserve to be on the roster.

@ sleza - OK, so maybe those two pitchers are still too similar. How about one asks the barber for the Ambrose Burnside, while the other twins selects the Billy Gibbons.

How can the Kings call themselves Kings when they have never won a Stanley Cup?
They should be renamed the L.A. Queens since they are from L.A. and have a tiara on their uniform!

Malkin and Crosby could each have gone to RFA and gotten a offer sheet for the league maximum. To complain that they're greedy in a sport where one play can end your career is stupid.

    NOW HEAR THIS...
accd to naslund in an MSG interview.. one has a rounder face and one gets layed alot more i forget which.
Datsyuk and all other Euro [profane]s who have been in USA cashing US checks for more then 3 years now should be forced to learn the language or forgo 15% of their salaries to bummy US born defensemen like Orpik.
also the fact that Malkin and Crosby could each have gone to RFA and gotten an offer sheet for the league maximum does exclude them both from being toolsheds!! crosby sucks!

hey CdT --- since the LA Kings aren't projected to make the playoffs again this year, we fans are rooting for them to take last in the entire league --- again. We are calling this campaign, playing for JT ( John Taveras).... just think of that potential fire power: Brown, Kopi, Sully, Armstrong, Fro, Stoll and Taveras... come on. they already have the start of an awesome defence with Doughty, Quincey and Johnson. good net minders with Quick, Ersberg and they should throw Bernier in and then the Cup will finally make it to LA......or at least a playoff spot!
playing the season for JT. yeah! go Kings go.
